In the third video of my Live Looping with Logic Pro X 10.5 series, I challenged myself to create a performance only using my Novation Launchpad X. Continue reading to gain some insights of my setup and the issues I experienced:
โ–ถ How to setup Live Loops in Logic Pro X to work with Novation Launchpad X
On my Launchpad X, I used three different modes: (1) the Mixer Mode to select and record arm tracks, (2) the Session Mode to control playback and recording of Live Loops, and (3) my own Custom Mode to play Logic Pro X instruments. For designing the Custom Mode I used the "Midi Note" widget to create different control sections: The two pink rows and the purple row are ascending C Major scales to control the lead, bass and pad sounds. (Side note: the track is actually performed in D Minor. Also, I used additional transposing of tracks within Logic as well as the Arpeggiator and Chord Trigger MIDI effects.) In the bottom of the Launchpad I created a drum layout to control the new Drum Maschine Designer plugin. To prepare the Live Loops section for recording, I created empty cells with predefined settings: I set the Rec-Length parameter to match the Cell Length and the At Rec-End action to change to Play Mode. To start recording into a specific cell, I first armed the track for recording via my Novation Launchpad X and then pushed the corresponding cell on the Launchpad grid.
โ–ถ How to record a live performance video
Creating a live performance with Logic Pro X, while screen recording with Quick Time player, has gotten a real challenge. Not only is this setup very CPU hungry, the more MIDI tracks and loops I add to the Live Loop section the more MIDI errors appear. I experienced errors like stuck notes, missed Note Off events and double triggering. Actually, it took me about 3 hours to film this performance video. And since I had to fight with so many issues, I still decided to recreate the track after I managed to do a decent take. So the audio youโ€™re hearing is actually an edited and slightly quantized version of the performance I did. However, the hand and button movement is accurate and there are no hidden changes.

These are getting good man. Iโ€™m Having a hard time seeing where you hit the record enable when tracking in. I know how to do it on mine, but the process doesnโ€™t seem as seemless when I try. Also can we talk about your custom tab setup? Are those all custom midi cc notes in your own pattern? I tried doing different channels to be able to play multiple tracks at once, could not get it to work for the life of me.
@swonic
@swonic 4 ะณะพะดะฐ ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
โ€‹@@BryanButler Thank you so much :-) Ok, so the record enable is the column of pads on the far left side. But it's kinda tricky because I also created empty cells on the far left column. These have no function, only to show the colour of the track to me for better navigation. You can see as soon as I press the "Record Arm" button (bottom left) the colour will change to white/red. The red pad indicates the currently armed track. So it's this moment after clicking "Record Arm" when I click on a white pad to make it red, that changes the active track and record arms it. That's also almost the answer to your second question: The custom layout does always only control the active (record armed) track. I think it's not possible to send MIDI to a track in Logic Pro that is not record armed. So there is no way to use one controller to control several different tracks (instruments) at once, that's also not possible if you have two controllers connected. (It works in MainStage though, that's one of the reasons I still think MainStage might be better for performing than Logic Pro X.) To clarify: Yes, these are all custom MIDI Notes (not CC!) in my own pattern. But I have a drum track armed they would all play drums and if I have a piano track armed they would all play piano! The three top rows are just arranged for playing melodies and the bottom rows are arranged to play drums. But as you can see some notes are even the same! PS: There might be a workaround to use one controller for different instruments though: If you use a plugin that routes different MIDI channels to different sounds within the same plugin (NI Kontakt can do this for example). You might also be able to achieve this by using Logic Pro X Track Stacks... because the whole Track Stack can be record enabled I think. But I'd need to try this. Also, it will use a lot of resources, because you would have to create one track stack with all your instruments and create a copy of it for every new track of Live Loops you want to create... (Hope all this makes sense to you...)
@BryanButler
@BryanButler 4 ะณะพะดะฐ ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
@@swonic Yeah that does make sense. I appreciate the i depth answer. For the Record enable, do you have a count in time for when you have to start performing once its armed or is it immediate?
@swonic
@swonic 4 ะณะพะดะฐ ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
You can change the count in time in the project settings! But start of recording will also depend on the "Quantize Start" setting. I'll try to cover this in a tutorial video. Btw, I just tested the idea with the Track Stacks and it doesn't seem to work. It works with NI Kontakt though.

Hi SWONIC !! Wow ! What a nice movie again. I watched this repeatedly to learn how you are playing. This is my summary on what you are doing with Logic Pro 1.Push the Cowbell cell to start in "Session " 2.Press Drums cell to record and push "Custom" 3.Play drums after counts down. 4.Press "Session" then "Record Arm" Button. 5.Push Drums cell to cancel "record mode" in the Record Arm row. 6.Press Bass cell to select "record mode" in the same row. 7.Hit the "Custom" to play the Bass. 8. Back to No.4 I found "Session" has two modes, one is for play all cell in each row.the other is to select function; Record arm, solo,mute, etc. I can play almost the same thing as you are playing. Thanks! The Session/Mixer Mode is not customized... however, the Custom Mode is created with the Novation Components software! Another inspiring video! Have you always been a Logic Pro user or switched because of 10.5? I am asking as I wanted to know what would you recommend i.e. Ableton Live 10 or LPX 10.5 for live looping and using Launchpad along with it.
@swonic
@swonic 4 ะณะพะดะฐ ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
Thanks so much! Oh, I'm using Logic Pro for 10+ years now. I think Ableton Live might be better for live looping actually, since it has that functionality for years already. Also, the Launchpad is much deeper integrated into Live than in Logic since it was developed specifically for Ableton Live. However, Logic Pro X is much cheaper. If you already own Logic I'd recommend just explore whatever new possibilities this 10.5 update brought for live looping. If you don't own Logic Pro just download Live and test it for 90 days - you can still decide after that period if it's for you or not.
@sharikmarius
@sharikmarius 4 ะณะพะดะฐ ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
Ironically enough, I actually found it more complicated to set up Live for live looping. Once you tweak the cell settings in Logic, it's easy to do a record a live looping performance.
@seangarland
@seangarland 4 ะณะพะดะฐ ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
I'm right on the fence for buying a Launchpad X. I don't do a lot of looping, but like the possibilities. I think your video answers one of my questions, but I'm hoping that you can confirm? One of the features I like about the Launchpad X is the Scale option. But with the need to rotate the device 90 degrees, it *looks like* the scale option does work horizontally? Is that correct? Thanks! (Also, you got a new subscriber!)
@swonic
@swonic 4 ะณะพะดะฐ ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
Hi, thanks for subscribing :-) Yeah... right now the Lauchpad doesn't recognise being turned, so the Scale option wont turn accordingly. However, you can create custom modes to recreate it and also Novation offers a couple of default custom modes for 90 degrees rotation... hope this helps!
@Serenitees
@Serenitees 2 ะณะพะดะฐ ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
I think since this video was made there is now an option in the Control Surface setup in Logic Pro to set the Rotation for the Launchpads. Check it out and see if changing the rotation setting in the device section of the Launchpad X Setup works for you?

So i see to arm a new track and hit record you have to push 4 buttons (mixer>arrow>select track>hitrecord). Is this the only way or is there an easier option?
@swonic
@swonic 4 ะณะพะดะฐ ะฝะฐะทะฐะด
Actually, the safest way is with 5 Buttons: Mixer > Rec Arm (Arrow) > deselect old track > select new track > hit record ๐Ÿ˜… When using MIDI tracks this seems to be the only solution to handle that workflow when using only a Launchpad X. It might be easier on other Launchpads (but I donโ€™t know) and also using different controllers. In the last two videos I was using key commands to help with the progress. I think there werenโ€™t less clicks in total though.

Good catch. I also explain this in the description of the video: Actually, I recorded this video live and did several takes for 3 hours straight. But the best take still had MIDI errors like stuck notes, missed Note Off events and double triggering, besides the first note bug. Therefore, I decided to recreated the performance with the recorded loops in the arrangement window and sync it to the video. That is indeed a very good question. I had to look up this name when writing the description myself. If you open up "Novation Components" to edit the settings of your Launchpad X you can create a "New Custom Mode". For editing your mode you use the so-called "Widgets" on the right side of the screen. And there is a widget that is called "Midi Note" โ†’ if you drag it is used to configure one individual pad to play a MIDI note! This is how Novation describes it on their support page: >> MIDI Note lets you assign a note to a single pad. You can customise the note, the octave, the channel, as well as change the behaviour of the note to be: Momentary - continues to play while held but releasing stops the note Toggle - Starts playing when pressed, stops playing when pressed again"
