I do this but on paper. I am too afraid of losing cash in a fire or if the house is robbed so I keep it in the bank. I also pay all of our bills online so taking cash out would mean having to out it back in to pay it lol. But the general practice is the same and I love these types of videos. I think cash in general is not good to have lying around, but if someone is able to make frequent trips to the bank, it's not a big deal. I write it down on paper also but you can also use fake money / play money or Monopoly money if you like having a system like this!

I just ordered these budget books/envelopes on Amazon. I am going to Mexico in May 2023 so I’m putting aside for that. Your nails are fire by the way! Definitely putting money aside for the salon lol.. I am 42 and I am completely debt free as of last year. I am a bartender so I come home with cash daily, this is such a great idea. I have savings that I don’t touch and my checking has enough for house payment, insurance, bills, utilities, etc for up to 6 mos. Putting cash aside for me is like a “set it and forget it” type of mentality. Pandemic 2020 was a real eye opener for me and I’ve also started prepping for either bad weather or natural disasters in case I can’t work. Did watching this give anyone else anxiety? I don’t like having too much cash on me (I usually won’t carry more than $100). And this method seems like such a chore, though I can see how it would be great for someone who earns tips and/or who has the time, patience, and enthusiasm for such a task. I was scrolling through the comments trying to find the answer to how she pays her bills but didn’t see any response from the content creator. I have most of my bills on autopay because I worry about being late on any payment.
@1rage17
@1rage17 Год назад
My place won’t accept anything but check, I wish they would do cash though. I hate using the bank cause I really don’t trust the electronics to organize my purchases, so many ways a false charge can get undetected and makes it harder to organize & save. With this method you can feel it in your hands, visually view what needs to go where, and I think this is a more trustworthy way of operating. Also it makes you more apprehensive about spending because just a click of the button can be addicting and making it way too easy to overspend. If it’s right in front of you I feel like I save better doing it with cash. Too bad everything charges on card though. 😢

It can be a chore but it really helps people get in tune with their spending habits. There is an app that does this same method which I prefer because all my bills are paid online and too much cash on hand is easy to lose. For those that need something physical to budget, I've seen people use fake money while the real money stays in the bank.
@lulu486
@lulu486 Год назад
As a social worker, I have helped people budgeting many times. Personally, I’m not a big fan of cash either (for the same reasons you gave). But for some people, budgeting with ‘real’ cash, gives them a better look on their spendings. It can be easier for some people to see the money they are spending while they are doing it. For those people, I would recommend having there bigger bills (rent, etc) on auto pay on their account and the “luxury spendings” (going out to eat, fun things, etc) in cash and organised like this. I hope that makes sense, English is not my first language.

@@zakraouisara9191 well I think its more like how well you could control yourself about your spending in regards to what you could earn, so the balance stays in positive and you don't get into trouble by going into credit card debt. Because if you only pay the minimum bill for credit card, it will charge an interest based on how much you still haven't pay them in full (if you purchase something more expensive than you could afford, for example, if you feel Fear Of Missing Out in buying the latest iPhone, in 12 month installment for example, each month if you pay your credit card if not in full as charged that month, it will build up 'debt' that is compounding in interest)

See I'm the opposite. If I have a card, I'll spend it all. Where if I only bring the money I'm "allowed" to spend, it'll force me to stay in budget and put stuff back if I can't afford it lol

Learn a few tricks on Microsoft excel by watching RU-vid vids, make a chart of your expenses/saving goals, design you excel spreadsheet, you get good at it, show and talk about your excel spreadsheet on job interviews and land a high paying job cause you’re now good and familiar with working with excel spreadsheets. I love Moterm wallets, I want one so bad. But I can’t afford it just yet. But soon! Watching y’all videos makes me so motivated, I’ve been trying to start, but things keep happening where I have to empty my envelopes before I can get them to grow, and I don’t even stuff them all as it is. 🥺 I’m determined to figure it out though, and the more videos I watch, the better I feel about doing this. I’m hoping that starting my next check I’ll be able to pull out for just a few sinking funds, while leaving my bills in my account (I’m too scared to take them out yet), and I’ll be able to slowly stuff them as my bills are taken care of, and I get a bit of a buffer in my account.

I just found this channel and this is fascinating to me. My finances are all over the place and there is zero consistency around how much I spend in various categories. I.E. Some weeks I don’t drive at all and some weeks I may be driving to a speaking event 4 hours away. And food is all over the place. Some weeks I’m not feeling well and barely spend any money on food, and other weeks I may go out to eat 3-4 times. I don’t think this sort of budgeting would work for me because my life is just too inconsistent (mostly because of health reasons) but the organizer in me still finds this really interesting!

I don’t think this sort of budgeting would work for me because my life is just too inconsistent The envelopes are part of my "no surprises" budget. Dentist envelope $40/month. $1200 for a root canal always comes at the wrong time. Now I have $1200 for the dentist. $40/month is "consistent." $1200 is not.

hey i’m new here, love this idea but i have a few questions. on the categories like restaurants, why do you only put $10 in there? i understand you’re saving it’s just realistically restaurants aren’t that cheap. same with groceries, how does $80 get you by for the month? is this a monthly thing or is it shorter time periods that this is for. sorry if i’m wrong about something haha just a general thought i had
@IndieCindy3
@IndieCindy3 Год назад
As far as groceries, she lives at home, so she likely just pitches and/or goes and purchases her own wants. The restaurant one does have me scratching my head. Is drink money? Tip money? Perhaps it becomes redundant to repeat all of these things in every video, but she should have something written out in the description so that people getting recommended these videos aren’t so lost. This seems to work well for her because she’s unmarried, seemingly child-free, and living at home.
@CerealSalad
@CerealSalad Год назад
Her rent is only $145 so I’m assuming she lives with her parents/family. Some of the other bills seem low too so I’m assuming her family agrees she pitches in a certain amount. Still it’s nice to see people budgeting and making emergency funds and not counting on family to be a safety net. The overall idea is applicable to other lifestyles. I’ve been using this method but leaving my money in the bank and having an excel spreadsheet “envelopes”. I don’t trust cash around even the best roommates. I’ve been doing it since I moved out at 18. It didn’t feel like it was working for the first 5-7 years but years later I’m hitting my financial goals despite only having modest income. In the early years I felt like it wasn’t working because my monthly savings were so small but friends in similar circumstances took on expensive car loans and credit card debt during that time to have a similar lifestyle. I’m assuming the $10 a month for restaurants is just 1-2 coffees or one drink out. Or she saves ten dollars for several months and then treats herself to something bigger. Some people don’t eat in restaurants or take a break from restaurants while saving for something special. If you go to restaurants give that envelope more. 😊. Her amounts won’t work for other people, you need to make your own realistic amounts that fit in your budget.
@anniewilson4001
@anniewilson4001 Год назад
@@CerealSalad yes thank you, i 100% agree, it nice to see this over other people on the internet spending money on useless things. id love to start doing this at some point but as i’m 17 the money i earn can be practically used for anything so i don’t need to budget just yet haha. i know ofc other people’s budgets wouldn’t work for other people, i was just genuinely curious what restaurants she was going to that are so cheap hahaha. thank you for your insight tho i find it really interesting!!
@frag_g

I appreciate how neat, tidy, and organized this video is, but I wish she'd give more context. Seemed like some categories were so similar or duplicates and many categories, relationally, weren't balanced. For example, birthdays got $50 while investing got $17. Touching on financial goals might provide a bit of clarity for the video. Otherwise, it was interesting to watch.
