"Now I See" Sony a7S - 4K Topaz AI upscale

When this was filmed in 2014, it was not possible to record 4K with the Sony A7S as the Atomos Shogun wasn't out, and the camera cannot record 4K internally. This was a shame as this video was a big reason why the camera sold so many; it demonstrated the low light power of the camera unlike anything else. The original is also my most-watched video on RU-vid.
I've been using the incredibly impressive Topaz Video Enhance AI for around 2 years, and I use it A LOT! I have messed around with upscaling some of my old videos, but I don't want to replace them as the original versions are a moment in time; that doesn't stop me from re-uploading it, though!
This was processed with V3 of Topaz Video Enhance AI, which is even more powerful; I set it to 4K, selected the enhance tab and left the Proteus auto setting to do its work. What makes this so much better than before was you had to set your parameters for the whole video, but each shot is different. When in auto, it is constantly analysing each frame and applying what it thinks the frame needs. It's very clever...it's AI!

Almost joined the company, but had another opportunity take precedence at that time... Don't regret my decision but man, it still hurts a bit! I watched your review over and over again until I realised I was doing it for a complete year, that was to moment I decided to go for it and step away from Canon and make the switch to Sony. It was a truly big step for me as I was only a video enthousiast and already spend lots of money in a Canon DSLR setup with many lenses. 8 years later and we have come from far since then, that little Sony helped me to become a photo- and videographer from profession whitin a year and half and I'm verry gratefull you made me make that step Philip! Different camera's have passed since than but I still love that little a7S although I mainly use it as my photography camera when I travel. The missing of internal 4K recording is the biggest reason I don't really use it for filming anymore. I'm always looking forward to your reviews but my bank acoount is mostly rather scared when you post a new video :D There's just no one that can make a review like you, I could watch them like a movie on the big screen with a bucket popcorn, some drinks, a blanket and my beloved handicat. Keep up the good work Philip!

Topaz VEAI has improved my Sony RX10 IV 480 and 960 fps shots (albeit I get more consistent results with the 480 fps clips). I shoot using Caprock Anti-Moire filters and then upscale with VEAI. It's not perfect but Topaz is headed in the right direction. Just needs more time to train their models for more complex scenarios.

Awesome job! Topaz is really doing wonders. I believe they'll continue to make it better over time. What preset do you usually use in Topaz VEAI? I have a Chronos 1.4 slowmotion camera that does 720P 1500 fps and I'm able to upscale it to 1440P with really good results. I try not to upscale more than 2X of the original size as I run into more artifacts if I push it that far.

We are ta the verge on something wonderful, but at the same time scary. We can already mixing reality to imagination and specially mahine learning aka AI imagination. Next 10 years is going to be crazy what we can soon do. AR and VR are coiming fast to our lives. I cant wait till we can go in VR to where ever we want. I think topaz is still not there yet. Edges of high contrasted areas have this highpass/over sharpened look. I'd rather set sharpness to zero. Very beautiful video aside from this tech test!

I haven’t used the original since 2015/16. I know the a7s II has the same low light as the a7s III. They all have dual ISO but I don’t know what the figures are.

@@vegardpedersen one thing to note, this was shot cine 2 so the ISO figures are quite a lot lower that Slog. Minimum for Slog 2 low base on the a7s is 3200, cine 2 is 100. If I had shot slog2 for this and stuck to second high base and pushed in post it would have looked a lot better. The in camera noise reduction is way too strong.

That's done a hell of a job. I'd be interested to see what it could do on some old ME20F footage I've got knocking about. The A7S and A7Sii suffered with the NR plasticising detail at extreme isos.

So does the mark 3 and FX3. I don’t shoot very high ISOs anymore. Am better off pushing it in post or just using the FX6 with its ability to tune/ turn off NR.

@@philipbloom yeah have the A7Siii and FX6. I wish you could disable the damn NR in the mirrorless. Fx6 is a great little camera if you bin the lcd or get the loupe mod. I use it for low light wildlife and its got the same charm as the EVA1 ( which just gets better with upgrades). Hope the back pain is ceasing and feeling better.

I have been using Topaz for pictures and I am a big fan honestly, very very lowlight flashless pictures of owls that come out great, but for video my pc is just not powerful enough... do you happen to know any basic needs that make it not just possible but bearable?

The best 4K low light camera you Dan buy is the FX6. It has the same sensor as the a7siii but with the ability to turn noise reduction off. That’s the key to really successful noise reduction in post. I showed this in my FX6 review.

My MacBook Pro M1 Max or whatever it’s called eats through it. Don’t use it on unedited shots, just the bits you want.

Hey Phillip, not sure if you've used Neat Video (I think you have?) but in your opinion is there much difference between using Topaz vs neat video on 1080p footage and exporting it in 4k resolution via media encoder?

If you look at this video it says on-screen that I used neat video on the roof al video. Topaz is NOT a replacement for neat video. Neat video has super fine control. Just look at how they both work. If you’ve not tried them then download demos and see. Topaz is great for this sort of thing but can’t compare with the power of neat video, it’s the best NR software you can get!

I normally process individual edited clips, you can’t do the whole lots as it would take forever. This edit was run through in its entirely than separate clips though.

You mention in your description you use this a lot - I'm curious how / why you're using it a lot. In video gaming they are exploring AI because it's 90% of the quality of 4K but rendering at 1080 and upscaling is massively less compute intensive. In a similar way are you regularly shooting 1080 and upscaling in post with AI? Or is it just because you have a lot of 1080 older source material you are breathing new life into?

You need to look at some of my videos, I literally talk about it and show it. See the FX30 review, the iphone filters video, the Mini 3 Pro review. Honestly it’s in all of them somewhere. For example, one of the many uses of it in my FX30 video is the rant section, the digital push in onGerald - topaz was used to maintain quality. One of numerous uses of topaz in that video.

Gerald's Cavillesque looks aside; do you ramp the strength of topaz as the video degrade on a push-in like that or does the automation prevent it from looking overcooked even as the source disintegrates in a constantly changing manner.
