Thanks for the video Philip. Quick question about the A7S III firmware update. Does it automatically add on the 1/48 shutter speed or will I need to download the separate DCI license to get 1/48 to work?
@@philipbloom Good Question. I'm new to Sony's Ecosystem. 4k DCI is obviously something I'ld want once I upgrade to some CF express type A cards or @ least a 256GB V90 card. For now I'm using a 128GB V90 card. From your experience is there a huge difference in file size between 4k DCI & 4k UHD? Beginner questions, I know lol Thanks
@@FreeRenaissance369 you didn’t reply to my question about why don’t you download the DCI license? It’s free. I don’t know if the 1/48th shutter option is only added to the camera once the DCI license is installed as I have it installed. What I can tell you is 1/48th is available in UHD shooting. You don’t need to be in DCI 4K for it. There’s little difference in file size between 4K UHD in XAVCS I and the DCI version. It’s a shame they made DCI only available in XAVCS I. I rarely shoot in that as I don’t need to. You can shoot in DCI 4K in every frame rate from 23.98p to 59.97p, including PAL ones. What I really want to see from them is to enable the HS (HEVC) codec for DCI and UHD for all frame rates. It’s currently only available for 4K 23.98p and 50p and 59.97p. There’s little reason to shoot in 24p dead on, which is only available in DCI 4K setting. If you are shooting high end cinema TV work to cut in with VENICE etc then sure. But the 23.98p is essentially the same. After all the Creator shot in that frame rate, they shot ProRes raw though which is a weird resolution, not sure I cover it here but I did in my a7siii review.
@@philipbloom I haven't installed the firmware update yet (I assumed I needed it before being able to use DCI 4K). I just got my camera about a month ago. So I'm still learning all the ins & outs. I also haven't shot in XAVCS I yet. Only XAVC S 4K. I'll experiment with the All Intra mode soon. It's good to know that 1/48 is available for UHD though. Thanks Having DCI only available in All intra mode is probably a combination of it's higher quality & a marketing move to get people on board with the pricier CF express cards. They like to phase things in gradually to the people as oppose to give us everything all @ once. Maybe one day one of us will be on their board & we'll give the people want we want 😆 in my case, 24p would be needed if I used my A7S III as 'B cam' on any project. Otherwise you're correct, 23.98 is good to go. As for the HEVC codec for all frame rates. That's a solid idea. I wasn't aware it was limited to the frame rates you mentioned. Now I know. I appreciate your responses Philip. Good luck with your projects bruh
@philipbloom Another question for you bruh. I'm assuming you've experimented with All intra on V90 cards. I know 4k 120fps is out of the question. What about 4k 60fps on V90's? have you had any issues with footage up to these frame rates? Thx
Sitting here with my cat Ginger....and was contiplating on buying the Pocket 3. This video just made me pull the trigger. picking it up tomorrow!!!!! THANKS!!!
I'm glad that I did followed professional before I knew it. As a hobbyist, after I've been playing, learning photography for a while I got to know that the edge sharpen in the picture control in camera made my pictures look more ugly than nice, so then I set them all off to zero, and the get the softer look pleasant to eyes on all of them. Now I can turn the edge sharpen in my phone camera as well, that was so satisfied. 😁👍
Any thoughts om the Nisi True Colour VND, Phillip? It's pricey but quite well reviewed. Also, thanks for the deep dive on these things. I'd never realised there were different combinations of linear and circular being used. I wasn't a fan of your content back in the day but the videos you're making now are beautifully simple and honest.
Dear Phillip .. you have been such a generous film - cinema - photographer online tastemaker for years, been learning qwith you since Canon 5D MK II .. great top see you online - peace my brother x
We came here via your cat videos, and were surprised when Koh Yao Noi jumped out. We spent 2 weeks on Koh Yao Noi and Koh Yao Yai in May 2014 and loved that it was relatively unknown and free of tourists. And as the people were just lovely and welcoming.
Be like Andy Dufresne from the Shawshank Redemption and ask for firmware updates until they do it. And when they do it, continue to ask for more updates. Worked in the movie, may work in the real world too.
This is an astonishing short film, considering the "drone era" it was shot. 10 years for drones is way longer than dog years. Thanks for putting it where more folks can find and enjoy it.
Very good REALISTIC review. I feel the price is too high. Just noticed one of Archie’s ear was somehow clipped during his life poor guy. Glad you could save him.
watching this again after 3 years. i owned my A7S3 for 4 years now and I still do not get why I should "upgrade" to FX3. It also seems like Fujifilm is making better cameras nowadays in terms of colours.
@@shweshwa9202 I think Sony’s colour is fantastic now and this is coming from a GFX and XH2S owner. The FX3 was never an “upgrade”, it’s more of an alternative. It has a couple of extra things that the a7siii has but other than that there’s zero reason to swap.
@@philipbloom Thank you Philip. I am following you since the 5DII tutorials, when I got to London from Italy and now i am back after 12 years in the UK. I agree, and I thought, hoped, it made sense to buy the FX3 but still, there is no reason. Also, I really like my viewfinder when I cannot see anything during the Italian summer. I cannot understand why they are not coating these bloody screens with proper anti-reflection stuff. I wonder how my colleagues can shoot weddings and other things in guerrilla style without a viewfinder.
just throwing my sitch out here: I've got an s20 fe which still takes great photos and the stabilization in daylight is not bad still now, I really dont have the budget to buy this DJI but dont wanna compromise and lose quality, as I am a video editor and my eyes are sharp so i dare ask, maybe you can help me: would it be more worth it to invest in an iphone or newer samsung + a gimbal instead of buying this? thank you so much! ps: i do a lot of travelling and its in unique places that i cannot reach easily (south-east asian countries)
If you are ok with changing to iPhone , that it would be an amazing decision. You would get the best of both worlds, a good smartphone that can last you 5-7 years , and an amazing camera. The iPhone 15 can shoot pro res log at 10 bit, which can be beautifully colograded. I know the sensor size is smaller than the osmo pocket 3 , but it’s still incredible.
Great video, thanks! If you have time, I'd appreciate your opinion and suggestions on my situation below. What's the most logical option for using a webcam and occasionally loading up some content as a finance consultant? I've seen that smartphones can handle a lot. I ordered the MX Brio 4K, but it has a wide lens. I got it new for 150 euros and am looking to return it. I'm deciding between a used ZV-E10 with a suitable lens for my needs or just using my Google Pixel 7 Pro smartphone. Thank you, and have a pleasant day. Cheers, Pierre A.
I just want to say thank you for explaining how you got rid of the drone's propellor noise and adding in background sounds. Also love the comparison shots between all the different drones right at the start. I'm not even 4 minutes into the video and this is by far the best video I've seen on the Mini 4 Pro
Very very good Philip 👏 my two sons and I we fly for over 10 years now too 😉 starting with the phantom 1 without a monitor 😂 I made a short „10 years flying drones“ video too 🎥 best cinematic greetings from an small and older german RU-vid filmmaker 🙈
@@pacificnorthwestsoundscapes thanks. I had a play with it but it has some issues. No IBIS for starters, bad for video but worse for stills. Switching between modes is slow. The video side has inferior auto focus compared to the R5 video mode, it’s a generation down, and you can’t shoot video in photo mode. For these reasons I didn’t trade in my R5 for it.
I shoot motocross Sony A9 Ver I Pictures are not an issue ever, But I have a hard time with the autofocus in VIDEO mode trying to capture the bikes.. again this is a A9 version 1 from of course 2017. Sometimes i can not even change out of Zone focus when i hit the record button I try also to set a different focus mode in picture mode then hit the record button and it defaults back to the Zone focus on the screen when hi hit the shutter button.. Maybe the a9 ver 1 is not capable of good fast action video?
@@DAVE_WHITE unfortunately the A9 has the old focusing system for video. Not sure why it’s acting like that though. You should be able to change focus area during recording. Problem is I’ve not touched one since 2017 so I don’t know for sure.
can you use this just as a field monitor to view ur camera on a bigger screen (or with a lut) or do u have to record to ur iphone with it? also is there a way to just get the app without the hardware?
The app only works with the hardware. You can download it for free though. 🤷🏻 This turned your iOS device into a monitor. The recording function is a side feature and far from the key part of it. If you want to use this on something bigger than the biggest iPad then no, this is the wrong device for you, instead just buy an HDMI cable for your screen of choice!
@@philipbloom Thanks! Do you know of any apps where I could just plug in my phone but still access features like histograms and luts on my phone instead of just see what the camera sees.
