Knicks have Bird Rights to Achiuwa, and since they are no longer hard-capped at 1st Apron, they can go high with offers. Meanwhile Sixers can only offer the Vet Min, preferably for 1 yr. Other teams can steal Achiuwa away from the Knicks, but not the Sixers. Besides Achiuwa can rebound but can't shoot. That is why he is so cheap. Sixers need more shooting first, which is why Marcus Morris is the realistic pic, but even he might want a Player Option in the 2nd yr, which could be the holdup.

Mike - The reason Morey went this route ($8 M) is that there was never any way to trade for DFS in the first place and also Morey correctly shouldn't value DFS as highly as most fans do. He isn't a good rebounder and is only a good defensive player. He's only 6'7". As I showed on X, about 13.6 M was the most KJM could have been signed without hitting the 2nd Apron, which Morey didn't want to do. And we really don't/won't have any Vet Min contracts that are expendable. They are all bargains. There are also some limits to "stacking". Of course combining contracts would hard-cap the team at the 2nd Apron. And for a S&T, it would have put the Sixers well into the 2nd Apron if S&T their own free agent. Would have required 2X the return value. However, 2nd Apron teams can not take back a player (or cash) if they sign and trade their own FA like KJM. That means they couldn't receive DFS in such a trade. They could only receive draft compensation which is what Nets would want from the Sixers. Fans are in more of a rush than Morey to complete the roster. Lets sign Marcus Morris and Jeff Dowtin first.

Free Agents signed at this time, are ineligible to be traded before Dec 15. But in KJM's case, he can't be traded before January 15, because he received more than a 20% increase and for other reasons. But I don't know the reasoning why Morey chose to sign KJM at 8 M instead of 10 M. Maybe Morey figured other teams wouldn't want to take back a 10 M contract in the new CBA. Morey must have some players targeted in the under 8 M range. I don't think we will have any secondary players to aggregate with KJM, without paying a price.

@@thewargododin1976 How can we match salaries for Ingram? We don't have any space below the cap threshold. The Ingram ship passed when PG was signed. Pelicans would like to keep Brandon, but need to convince him that in the new CBA, teams can only afford to pay select players near a Max contract. He's more of a 32 M per year guy. That's the main reason NO had problems trying to trade him.

McCain's trade value should be pretty low right now. His value is based on shooting, which has failed him in the Summer League.

@@tejadash7164 KJM can't be traded until Jan 15. McCain already signed his contract, so I'm not sure he can be traded now. There was supposed to be a 60 day window to sign their FRP. I'm not aware of any signed first round pic that was ever traded. That would look bad for Morey. Besides, McCain's value should be depressed. Jeff Dowtin is clearly better than McCain right now, and a better fit next to Maxey. Dowtin would be the 5th guard if he is signed to a Vet Min.

KJM can't be traded before Jan 15. There are reasons Morey had to go this route and why he chose 8 M. People have been fed incomplete information before (I explained in detail).

Who plays the 4 isn’t a big issue. You can play George there. Have Caleb starting because you need his defense along with George. Oubre Maxey and Embiid the other starters

Not only is it not possible now, but it really wasn't possible at any time before, and besides DFS isn't that good. We really need someone like Paul Reed with a few hundred hours of experience at the PF position (that Nurse and Doc failed to offer Paul Reed. Need a PF who can rebound and shoot 40% from 3 pt, which fits BBall's. Although signing Caleb was the right move, it was a big loss to do it at the expense of waiving Paul Reed, who no doubt would be better than Achiuwa at PF. Some media people were being cute to think we could trade for DFS, but they didn't consider a roster of 15 for us, and that we don't really have expendable players to add.
