My craziest camping experience is when we were backpacking on a little peninsula of a lake, and when we woke up, there were about 20 mountain goats, babies and all with in 2 or 3 feet of us. It was crazy.

Even when we woke up, they just stayed there. We tried to spook them but they just came right back

On the Canadian/US border one of my good friends and I took our wives and kids up to a canoes only area that is world famous for it's scenery, fishing, and camping. On the night we got into the entry port, it started to rain. We decided to try to make it to the first portage and spend the night on the next lake over. By the time we were about 3/4 of the way to the portage, the wind had kicked up and we were in a driving rain and sleet storm. I had my wife and son with me, and Pete had his wife and daughter, and two sons with him. I kept watching his daughter and I noticed that she was really shaking, so I asked her if she was okay, and she said she was really cold. About 10 min later I paddled back to her and she said that she was getting warmer and had stopped shaking. In the area that we were in you can only camp on designated camp spots. I yelled at Pete that they would have to fine me or put me in jail but we were stopping to emergency camp and get everyone warm and dry. He agreed. So we went to a spot that would allow the canoes to hit shore. I got out my tent and set it up, while Pete and one of his boys got a fire going. I asked my wife and asked Pete asked his wife if they would take their daughter into the tent and lay down with her between them and snuggle up to her. We went to work cooking some food and heating some water and in about 10 min we had warm water and some hot dogs and got them to the girl. When she came out of the tent she looked 100% better. I talked with her one time about it some 15 years later and she said that she didn't realize how serious her condition was until her mom explained to her while they were warming her up. That night, rather than set up another tent, we all slept in my tent. It snowed that night, and yet we all stayed warm and got through the night. I still get a little emotional when I think about how close we were to losing his daughter. Pete said that he hadn't noticed until I brought it to his attention. So if there is a lesson here it is that everyone should take responsibility to see to it that everyone is always safe.

I'm in my tent about 20 some miles in the wilderness watching the adventure now! in a blizzard, and absolutely amazing! My craziest camping story was pretty much the same as yours, but in mine it was a grizzly bear and it woke me up it was sometime at night in the AM, it was growling and roaring, Wow was I freaked out, it was hanging around for a good hour seemed like it was right next to my tent from 30yrds. What an amazing adventure Luke, and it wasn't boring at all. I'm experiencing the samethings here you mentioned, staying in the tent most of the day, sleeping. Luke, you should get snow shoes for the deep snow! -Jake

Some people fall victim to being in the wrong place at the wrong time unprepared. Most people don't even keep a medkit or a fire extinguisher in their vehicle and some might carry an emergency vehicle kit like flares and jumping cables, blanket, stuff like that. I think it's well worth it to have a tote, tool box, or bag somewhere in the vehicle to have the normal car stuff, but also hand warmers, blanket(s), water, food, fire extinguisher, med kit/IFAK, and an axe or knife, ect. A survival kit as I would say. Sadly too many rely on their phones and roadside assistance, but it doesn't do any good if they can't get to you.

As kids, we were at a camp in Gatlinburg, TN. The camp counselors decided to have a Varmint Race with the winner getting $10. We had a half hour to go into the woods to find a varmint. I found a frog, my sister found a centipede and my brother snagged a salamander. It was in the 90s when the race began. We figured for sure my sister would win. Her centipede took off like a bat out of Hell and halfway through the race it stopped. Little thing fried on the pavement! My frog hopped its way to first place! Great memories!

Regarding the great memory from your childhood that probably started you on your way to camping, when I was a boy my uncle gave me a small army surplus rucksack with a few things in it including a mosquito tent. It was like treasure. I spent many a night in the tent looking up at the stars. That's what started me on a lifetime of camping.

First off...love to watch a grown man enjoy winter camping. I've done my share in N. Idaho and I have many great memories. But. Use a glove when you knock snow from inside the tent. Bare skin has oils that will adhere to the tent fabric and create leaks. Stay frosty!

I genuinely think this is the first time I've ever heard anyone say the words, "I love to shovel." 😁👍👌✌ Speaking of the turkey flyby and camping stories.. in the truck headed to our property for a camping trip, we're out in the middle of nowhere.. no cars in sight, flat open land on either side, when all of a sudden from nothing we hear this indescribably loud roaring rumbling sound, so loud the whole truck was vibrating along with our entire bodies, and it steadily got even louder and more violent.. we thought the friggin world was ending right then and there, a nuke was gonna land on us any moment.. After a few seconds that seemed like minutes.. through the windshield we see an instant flash of a big dark blur and shadow followed by a bright light flash come from over the cab of the truck and forward ahead of us, it seemed like it was just inches above the truck, but was probably ten feet.. It was a friggin military fighter jet! It screamed by so fast that even though it was flying incredibly low and directly in line with us, parallel with the straight road we were on, it still disappeared from eyesight in just seconds. We figure he spotted us towing our big toyhauler, the only vehicle on that road for miles and miles and decided to give us a thrill. The sound, speed and power of that jet, flying flat out literally only feet above our heads, it was truly awesome. It is something we will remember and reminisce about for the rest of our lives! 'Merica! 🇺🇸👍👌✌

Three days in a snowstorm. I'm catching up with the videos. I particularly like the winter ones. Two winter's ago we set a record with 565cms of snow (222 inches). In 1973 Morehead City to Cherry Point MCAS got a lot of snow. My Squadron was the only Squadron working. We took an EA-6A and a RF-4B and pulled them into the hanger and fired them up to blow the huge chucks of snow off the flight line and taxi way. A couple times we had over 10 foot chunks of snow blow up in the air. We had a truck hooked to the nose gear to keep the planes from moving forward as we backed them up. Another time in 1967 I was out at Philmont Scout Ranch and had a cub bear tear my sleeping bag up while mom broke into our bear bag. The Chipmunks and a Badger took the food bag down so the bear could pick and choose what she wanted. Than the others got their turn.

About the 6th day a Bear, with cubs along with Chipmunks and a Badger took down our food out of between 2 trees and tried to eat all of our food. I had something huge come into my tent and shredded the bottom of my sleeping bag. We had to eat off the land for 2 days until we got to our outpost to get more food. Showers stunk like rotten eggs. I found while deer hunting on a drive in the snow that it was easy to overheat. I would open my jacket and lift and roll my tee shirt and shirt up to my chest and allow the moisture to evaporate. I would do this before they got wet. Back then all I had was cotton tees but I believe now that a Gildan poly tee would be better at wicking moisture away. I know they feel warmer. When I finished the drive, I would cool off and tuck my shirt back in before I got cold. I would also take my wool hat off and put on a light ventilated baseball camp to hike in so moisture would not build up. Sometimes I might wear just a ski band to cover my ears. I would also carry a packable down vest in my pocket if I needed more warmth or the temperature dropped while away from camp. I also learned that if my baseball hat got wet from a cold almost freezing rain, I needed to get back to camp. This was just before gore-tex thinsulate hats became popular.

Next time you go out in deep snow (I'm from Michigan and snow like that is not unusual) you might think about a pair of snowshoes; it makes snow much easier to deal with, and you sweat less because you aren't postholing when you walk. I use MSR Lightning Ascents, but any decent brand name would be a huge improvement.

Thanks for taking the time and energy to record your trip. I love camping but in Northern Ontario it's a three season activity at best.

wow, so envious of camping in that weather. We set a record of lowest amount of snow in 50 years. How do you get such deals on ebay? Do you search at 3-4am in the morning?

Wisconsin girl here - we spent a good amount of time in the north woods while I was growing up - any tree that is downed, horizonal and within behind range makes a perfect toilet seat! We used to make great sport of finding the perfect perch lol Also, the snow is as terrible aa it is gorgeous - and filming on top of it all? Pfft you are indeed sir a beast!

I enjoy your adventures and reviews. Thank you for motivating me to allow myself to get back into the outdoors. I got married and its been far too long since my last overnight in the wilderness- more than 6 years ago. This is the year that it begins again. Thanks again Luke~

I just got a Samsung Gear VR and love love VR 360 videos. There are a ton on YT. Have you looked into filming some things in 360? The Gear 360 is coming out later this year and it seems to allow 360 recording pretty easily. Les Stroud has a few 360 videos on YT that you should check out. You can view them on your phone and pan around. Pretty cool stuff and some of your adventures would be awesome to be immersed in 360

I love his claims that the winds are blowing 40-45mph and when he pans to the trees they are barely swaying and not a leaf is blowing. Lol

If you get very high winds you don't want the shed coming down on your tent during the night. The tent can cope fine.
@ivahill2280

I would put tent close to shed to test it but have the shed for shelter to cook and have small fire to warm up being woman and little wimpy , if tent fails instant shelter lol
