I did 30 years of long haul trucking. The coldest I have ever been in was about four years ago, I was in Fargo N. Dakota. It was -25 with a wind chill of -65 with winds blowing about 50 mph. Brutal. I had a APU, an auxiliary power unit on the truck that heats it. Or I could run the truck with the heater on, which is what I did for two reasons. One, the truck heater runs more hot and two, I ran it so the fuel had less of a chance to gel up. If it would of gelled up, then the truck would shut down and cost me some bucks to get it back going. But as far as heat in the truck, with the wind blowing under the floor boards, I could not get warm in the bunk. I had on two pairs of socks, sweat pants on under my regular pants, a t-shirt, a thermal undershirt plus a regular shirt, plus two blankets and a sleeping bag. I didn't carry a sleeping bag that was set up for that kind of weather, as I was usually not in that kind of weather. To show how bad it was, I got up every hour-hour and a half and ran into the truck stop to get me some coffee. And I was in the front row of the parking lot. And my beard was really long....ZZ TOP long. And everytime I walked into the truck stop, my beard literally froze up. Lol. That was one brutal night. I delivered my load the next day and told my dispatch to find me a load further south of there so I could get into better temps. Crazy night there. I am retired now. But that was one of the worst temps I had ever been in.

I was just north of Greensburg Kansas in 2007 at a very small truck stop when the F5 hit and my wife and I were locked in and took shelter with about a dozen other customers . We were lucky that when they let us out we jumped into our truck and headed west and I have never seen the devastation we witnessed about a mile down the road from the truck stop . Every tree and every structure had not just been destroyed but there was nothing left but the foundation's and farm equipment was reduced to balls of scrap metal . I had never seen anything like this , every bush that hadn't been ripped out of the ground had no bark left above ground .

The first canoe trip you take where there is a fair amount of portaging will make you appreciate the weight savings with freeze dried food, and several trips humping a lot of bulky gear will make anyone a believer in less is more.The more you know, the less you carry.

I think your idea of spending a month to experience winter camping could be very exciting and informative. My son just sent me a photo from Grand Junction, CO and it is snowing right now (early Nov) He is very excited because down here in Coastal GA we barely see snow at all. Personally, I would love to visit places like Yellowstone, Tetons, Glacier NPs in the winter someday. Definitely not camping (my old bones couldn’t take the cold), but spending weeks at a time in a completely different and new environment. That would be a rush for me. Keep doing what you do and love. Some folk's will look at this an be like why would anyone just go out in that kind of cool just to camp. I look at it an say i wish i could still do it. About 5 years ago i was hiking from portland Or to san clemente Ca . i came back home 3 months later i was in a wheelchair. It put me in a state of depression simply because i was told i would no longer be able to walk more or less hike again. I believed it. One day i seen your video about 1.3 years ago. An it made me happy to see theres still folks that love doing this. 2 months after that video i started moving my right leg then a month later i started to move my left leg. I had lost a lot of muscle in both legs. I have been working very very hard to learn to walk again. It has been the hardest thing i have ever done in my life. I have been able to build up a great amount of muscle in my right leg but the left one is slacking. I want to hike so bad i'm willing to do anything to make it happen again. I'm getting older an running out of time though. I have been looking at the crua tents an coons because i would certainly need the warmth because of the nerves in my left leg is pretty bad an is intence when it gets cold. I would be the happest person under the sun the day i step foot on my own to the top of a mountian again. i look out my windows an see them all around me an cry at times because theres places in there i have yet to see. Maybe one day i will get my last leg in my true home nature.

I would strongly advise not adjusting the tire pressure until you get off the mountain and into civilization (assuming it's not completely, or near flat). Altitude effects notwithstanding, every time you manipulate the valve stem, there is the chance of you breaking it or getting it stuck open. That's a lot easier to deal with in a gas station lot in the nearest town on your way out than it is on top of a mountain. Rare yes, but I've seen it happen and driving out a few psi low isn't going to hurt anything.

Used to work on the top of billboards changing out the vinyl flex faces. We heard sirens and thought it was a fire truck on the highway. Went back to work, then heard banging on the sign from everywhere. It was corn, coming from the sky!!! You guessed it, we immediately unhooked and dove head first in the basket. Pulled the release lever and boomed on the ground and ran to the overpass and ditches. It pulled boards and stringers right off that sign. Yeah... real close.

Hi Nick. Yes you are 100% correct concerning small countries and their rules regarding sticking to hiking trails and the reasons why. Here in NZ we have some very dangerous remote areas and if you get lost, quite often you will never be found. Plus the expense of search and rescue teams and endangering their lives for the most unfortunate people who find themselves lost. Your country is so vast and is extremely exiting and massive. Not to mention absolutely beautiful. I love that you can share it with us. As for you and Suzy renting in other areas,I for one would really love to see some of those adventures.

Same here in Australia. The time, money and effort put into rescuing (or searching for) lost souls with no bushcraft skills is impressive. Hundreds of volunteers and emergency services personnel searching for someone for days sometimes. I’m very proud of our rescue services, emergency services and volunteers - world class! 🫡

Your a very, well experienced truck camper, and yes you do it effortlessly. But saying that, you do it a lot more than the normal truck/no truck camper does. You know what works well for you, with the smallest footprint. I wish I had you in the deep deserts of Khandadhar. You would of enjoyed the temperature spread from morning till night. We just did what you are thinking about doing - rented a house out in the Pacific NW for a month and used it as a base to do a lot of hiking and exploring. We liked it so much we will probably do it again when life commitments and budget allow. There is so much great nature out there and it is all so different than the east coast experience. And the variety is incredible. Where else can you go hiking in amazing mountains one day and hike along a spectacular beach the next day? I think they are now into the rainy season, but October out there is great.
