It's very controlled in the Netherlands. You need a license it requires: No criminal record Good mental health Required safe storage of guns and ammo in safes if you take it home, ussually it stays in the gun club. We prefer to call the cops rather than to use guns.

Nice one by Lubach. He kinda summarizes the view of pretty much all of western Europe when it comes to gun ownership in the US. Even the Swiss who do have lots of guns laugh their asses of at the US. LIttle anecdote. I have only once been threatened by a gun. I was visiting my cousin in Florida, and unknowingly committed the horrible crime of having a broken taillight. So I see a copcar flashing his lights at me, I stop and get out of the car (because that's what we often do here when pulled over, as they can't search the car if neither it or the windows are open, apparantly that's a big "nono" in the us). Moron cop nr 1 instantly starts yelling: "don't move, don't move", while having his hand ready on his holstered pistol, while cop nr2 slowly circles round behind me to then shove me from behind into the car. A lot of shouting followed, they cuffed me. Then after I told them where my ID was, they started yelling "wtf is a Belgian doing here?" (yes, those famously dangerous belgians apparantly...) and some other shit which i completely forgot as i froze out of terror". It kept on going for a while until they got bored of it I guess. They then told me that I needed to learn to show the proper respect by calling them "sir" and drove off without even as much as an apology. That was the only time in my life that I've ever been scared for my life. This kind of stop in Belgium would go sth like this. I'd get pulled over, get out of my car. A cop would slowly just waddle over and say: "good morning sir, do you know that you have a broken taillight?" To which i would reply "no" (unless I'm an idiot and love paying fines). He would then check my ID (carrying it is mandatory and so is identifying yourself if asked) and the papers of the car. Then he would then just have a little think about whether or not he liked my face, and if so, he'd just tell me to get it fixed, say goodbye and drive off, if not, i'd get a fine. Also we don't say "sir" or the dutch equivalent to cops, they say it to us. They serve us, not the other way around, so they are the ones that need to initiate a respectful interaction. Needless to say, i will never ever go back to the US. Never. It's a country populated with way too many psycho's who can't get any psychological care, or even worse, whose psychopathy is seen as "manly" or "tough", and are thus encouraged to do worse.

@@ExeQtd Sure, that's probably why countries that pretty much have no guns in private ownership tend to not have lots and lots of gun violence. Just imagine being able to send your kids to school, knowing that nobody is going to shoot them. Being so confident of that that there are no cops walking around, no metal detectors etc. And if you don't have kids. Not even needing armed guards at shopping malls. The simple reality is, the more guns you have in a society the more your entire society needs to adapt to the violence that comes forth from it. It is only when you go outside the US that you can truly see what a violent society the US is. Fights in schools? Pretty much never happen here. Fights in bars? IF one happens it's pretty much headline news because it's so rare. You guys have been conditioned so hard that the solution to guns is more guns. When in reality it's no guns.

as a licensed gun owner will try to shed some light in the how and whats of owning a firearm here in the Netherlands. in order to get a license you will need to have a clean criminal record, no mental illness or anything that will make it dangerous for you to have a gun , you will need to join a shooting club and be a member for at least a year ( and have at least 18 sessions on the range per year ) before you can apply for a license. your gun needs to be kept inside a gun safe and separate from the ammunition. of corse you can take it out for maintenance, going to the range or a shop.( as stated before , while traveling with the gun , you need to take the most direct route to the destination and not go shopping or something like that while carrying it) a check on the safe if part of the process of getting the license. the license needs to be renewed every year and you can expect a annual check on the safe by the police. they will see if everything is stored correctly and if the serial numbers match with what is on your license. then , have at least 18 registered sessions on the range each year and your good to go.

Some additions where it concerns hunting guns and rifles. As a hunter I also have to lock away my guns in a safe that is bolted to the wall of our home. ammunition is kept apart in a different safe. People living in the house are not allowed to open the safe. locks and combinations are kept away from them. To obtain a permit for guns as a hunter, you will have to do a rigorous theoretical and practical exam, which for hunters mean target shooting with a rifle and clay pigeon shooting on a range. The theoretical exam does not only have questions about gun safety and gun handling, but also about agricultural land, recognition of wildlife in great detail. Even if you pass you can't go out to a gun store and buy something. To be able to hunt in The Netherlands you will need to have access to at least 40 hectares of land which can be hunted. Usually hunters gather in small syndicates and make arrangements with farmers to hunt. This comes with added responsibilities, like cleaning the fields and pest control. If you don't have access to this as a hunter, the same rules as for sport shooters apply. A gun permit can be withdrawn if the gun owner commits a violation or felony which is not related to gun ownership or gun use.

I'm Dutch I learned to shoot in the army, with diverse weapons. But I feel so much safer without owning a weapon, knowing chances are most people don't. Visiting the USA I felt this tension of hidden alertness, towards police against violence everywhere. Many Americans visiting my city tend to say, next to how beautiful it is, how safe it feels. That's what I appreciate very much. Watch some 'reverse culture shock' videos of Americans returning home after some years. They sense that too, and many other things.

I have some minor experience with firearms due to the time I was conscripted. The army hardly trusts you with a weapon. Which seemed totally fine to me. While technically adults, we were just past 18 and liked to get drunk while going out and doing crazy things. You do not need guns with that. Some examples: The first time I went to a firing range, we were getting ready to shoot in a prone position. One by one we got a magazine with a few bullets. The sergeant was standing next to us and he made it pretty clear he would kick in our face if we pointed that gun anywhere but down range. After the firing drill, we first had to check ourselves if there were no bullets left in the gun and then needed to show it to the instructor. We then handed in our guns at the armory again. Can't have idiots like us running around with them. Then cleaning guns. Again check for bullets first, despite we already did and possibly done again at the armory. Later that week we had an outdoor training exercise and had to bring our weapons. With a big red stopper screwed on the end of the barrel, so it was obvious it could not be fired (unless you want it to explode in your face perhaps, I dunno) I'm not sure how this would go in the USA, but there are at least some similarities: I saw a video of Navy Seals training on the beach. Physical training, so in sports outfit. They did NOT bring guns to that exercise. So while the military restricts gun use for trained professionals, they let amateurs walk around with it? How does that make any sense?

I have dual British/Dutch nationality and live in the Netherlands, but I have children and grandchildren in the USA and frequently go there to visit them. I much prefer the gun culture (or lack of it) here in Europe, where it feels much calmer and safer than USA. Acid attacks in UK or other European countries always make the headlines, not just because they are so awful but also because they are so rare. Knife crime is more common, but no more common than it is in the USA. The homicide rate in the USA is about four times that of the UK, but if you were to take shootings out of the equation they would be about the same. So Americans are not more murderous than Brits; it's easy access to firearms that makes the difference. Sadly the same applies to suicide rates.

I see people in the comments say that guns are allowed except(…), but it’s the other way around. Guns are banned, except when you’re a member of a shooting club or if you have a hunting permit. You need a permit, which are very hard to come by. And there are very strict rules you have to abide by. You are obligated to store the weapon separate from the ammo, and both have to be locked in a gun save. Under no circumstance are you allowed to have a loaded gun in your house. Also, when transporting a gun, it has to be in the trunk of your car, and it can’t be ready for use. You’re not allowed to transport it in such a way that you can reach for it. There are also background checks and you have to pass a psychological test. Having a gun for self-defense is not allowed. Open or concealed carry is not a thing here, doing so will land you in jail (not to mention having your weapons taken away and losing your permit).

Yes i agree the absence of guns causes a rise in other types of violent crimes but i ask you what is easier? Shooting someone or stabbing someone? What is more more survivable? A gunshot wound or a stab wound? Guns have more range and can more easily injure a great number of people in a short amount of time. Its for these reasons that guns are banned. Yes some criminals still have guns but actual shootings are few and far between and usually stay between criminal organizations. We don't need a gun for safety because our police are well trained and much more trustworthy than american police often is. I think that before tackling the gun problem in the US you guys first need to implement better screening protocols for aspiring police officers and increase training so bad apples are weeded out and those who are in the field are trained to know when to shoot and when not to shoot and trained to know how to defuse situations with as little force as possible. In principle it is illegal to bear arms in the Netherlands. You can technically bear arms if you're willing to go through the motions, but you'll need to show proper cause, proper handling, a clean history, a clean psych eval, and from what I've heard on the news a while back there are supposed to be triannual checkups on these conditions as well (though the fact it hit the news obviously means something wasn't happening the way it should). So generally speaking you're not going to find a citizen walking around with a gun on their hip here. We do have shooting ranges however that civilians may become a member of to fire arms on the premises for sport. Haven't been to one myself but I would imagine those are also a lot stricter than the American ones.

only way to have a gun in the Netherlands is when it is stored at a shooting-club. You need to go through a process for a shooting-sportslicence, where they will screen you excessively. So the gun can't go out of the shooting-club. If the Police find a weapon in the safes of the shooting-club that is not registrated to someone with a licence, all guns will be confiscated and checked. This will have repercussions to the shooting-club and the person that is linked to the gun.

Rifles are not allowed here but there are exceptions. There are people who hunt or go to a shooting range who have a gun but they have to have a permit and theres rules, many rules. The rules are things like how you store your gun, where you can use it, how and how often you have to clean it etc. You also cant have a police record or mental problems (a doctors note of health but also if you even have any tendencies towards agression). You also have to get a third party thats close to you to sign the form so they can vouch for you and in case of a shooting range the owner of the range also has to sign. You also have to be 18+ and there are many more rules so feel free to comment under this if I missed anything or got it wrong.

the idea behind it all is i think europeans acknowledge the huge social and economical value of a persons life for what it is. An unhealthy, unhappy or dead person cannot contribute to society ( work, pay taxes, being a stable and inspirational part of a community), in other words: we invest a lot of money in people, because they generate a multitude of economic value of what we initially invested. then we dont go shoot em. Thats a huge waste of public money, to put it very bluntly. The other way of saying it is we care a lot for our fellow people - and its institutionalised.

In theory it's easy. If you don't own a gun you can't use it. I believe law enforcement should have a monopoly on carrying/owning firearms. It will be a tremendous job for the US government to gain the trust of the public at a level that they don't 'need' to own guns and have faith in lawn enforcement. And even then it will take decades to get rid of most guns due to the amount of guns in private possession.

The war on guns would go just like the war on drugs. Considering that the USA is land locked to a border country that is run by cartels the bad guys will always have access to illegal firearms leaving the law abiding citizens at their mercy if they too are completely unarmed. The founding fathers of the USA knew exactly what they were doing when they wrote the Second Amendment.

In the Netherlands, guns are forbidden by law. Citizens, except police, military Police, army, etc, need a license. To obtain a license you need to become a member of one of the associations. After being a member for at least a year with a lot of practice and studying gun laws you can apply for a gun permit. There is an extensive background check by the police. If you pass, you get a gun permit with the brand and model specified in the permit. With a license, you can buy a gun and ammunition, and transport it to the gun range, that's all. You need to have a gun locker at home that is checked by police. You are never allowed to carry your gun or rifle in any other place. Police, MP and military are trained extensively. Their position holds a license by law. They are only allowed to carry a gun while on duty. Guns stay in a locker at the police station, you are not allowed to carry it home or in private.

When people see a gun the police wil come guns drawn and there are high consequences to it. So actually almost none here have a gun

No, the policy concerning the right to own guns in the USA is absurd and WEIRD. And yes, there are other kinds of violence in other countries that have strict gun laws but it's only a fragment in relation to the United States gun related violence and casualties. Acid attacks are very rare and mostly related to cultures that sea honor and purity of (especially women) as a great value. In the Netherlands we have very strict gun laws. Even members of the army and police have to leave their weapons in the police stations of army camps and are not allowed to take the weapons home. You can only posses a weapon if you are a member of an shooting-club and only can take your gun from your house to the shooting range and back by the shortest way. You can own a shot gun only for hunting (you have to have a special permit) and rifles like an assault gun are simply forbidden. In the Netherlands you can't even own a toy gun or replica that looks real, simply because you can use is to thread or scare somebody. And yes, also in the Netherlands there is gun violence but mostly amongst drug dealers and drug supplying gangs. In the last 50 year's there has been only one mass shooting incident, by Tristan v.d. V. in Alphen aan de Rijn. He was a member of a shooting club but when police was checking his mental stability They have made an error. There were six victims in 2011. Gun Policy in the states is absurd.

Netherlands gun laws are really strict (You'd have to jump to so many hoops [including psychological assessmentS] to get a license, that any sane person gives up at some point. And a license grands you the right to move a disassembled gun in a LOCKED case from your gun safe to the gun club and vice versa. Guns and ammo have to be kept separate..)... There are more and more illegal guns popping up lately though... (Because in Belgium and Germany the gun laws allow much more than the Dutch law does, and many people go get a gun "legally" [*If the gun stays in Germany it's not illegal to own it] in Germany to bring it illegally to the Netherlands unfortunately)

Its not just strickt gun laws we have. The law says the government has the monopoly on VIOLENCE! That means no guns, or other weapons, and even if you defend yourself barehanded, it needs to be very very proportionate to the threat and you need to have explored and exhausted any and all other options!! For example: if you are threatened, in serious danger of actual harm and you trash your assailant... But you had the option to disengage and run, or disengage and lock yourself away in a room and call the police, and failed to take that opportunity, you might very well end up in jail!! So be very careful with that in the Netherlands...

You can have a gun but it's regulated to points you would find very extreme perhaps. For example Guns must be stored seperate from bullets both locked up and closed in a way children have no means getting to them. The police randomly can come to your home to check this. Yeah you have the right just like in the states to refuse access for police in your home if you haven;t commited a crime but if you exercise that right obviously your gun permit will be revoked. If you show signs of mental problems read house dirty or in dissaray gun permit revoked. If you shoot somewhere that isn't allowed gun permit revoked. Ofcourse you can't have any kind of criminal record or obtain one. And when you buy one all of the reason to revoke one are checked prior to the gun handed over to you. Even if you are for example a licenced hunter you have to keep bullets and gun seperated travelling to the area your allowed to hunt.

I would like to draw a parallel around the hypocrisy of abortion: Americans think they protect their children by showing them as little sex as possible, not allowing sex education until almost the official age of consent and hardly giving them access to contraception. We, the Dutch, do things differently. We are practical people and realise that sex at a young age happens, whether parents forbid it or not. So we educate our kids, we give them contaception, we tell them it’s ok as long as they do it safe and make it mean something, and if an accidental pregnancy occurs we guide them through the process of, if so decided, (legal) abortion, both physically and mentally. And guess which country has one of the lowest abortion and teenage pregnancy rates in the world and which one the highest. Us dutchies, we maybe a bit weird, but we acknowledge our issues and deal with ‘em….

its a whole paradigm shift, a culture clash. In most european countries, one doesnt carry weapons. Any conflict that is beyond words, is supposed to be left to the authorities, they re the only ones allowed to carry weapons. All in all in europese countries you are very safe and carrying weapons is considered a huge death and injury hasard and totally unnecesary. This goes in hand with the fact european countries have a thorough welfare system, where real poverty is very scarse and most people are provided for their basic needs. The atmosphere is far less competitive and anxiety-driven, you dont need 3 jobs to survive and education is affordable for most.Everybody has acces to affirdable medical care for most of its part. if you dont have work you can have a basic income from most governments. trade unions ensure working conditions are reasonable and respect life work balance. and proper minimum wages. a gun society would undermine all trust we carefully build up during decades, even centuries. with guns, wealth and good life for the masses, as is the case now in europe would simply not be possible. Peace brings wealth for all

Generally speaking we do not have guns. We do not know people who own guns. You can own a gun. To shoot at the shooting range. But the laws to take it outside the shooting range are very strict. We had our first mall shooting a few years back in the city 'Alpen aan de Rijn', it dominated the news for months. It was a kid that had a shooting range gun, but als psychological problems and the checks that are in place to prevent these problems where circumvented. So generally speaking you will only see guns on cops and maybe some rifles on military security personnel on our airports. So if you see or know that someone has a gun, you can almost safely assume that it is for criminal purposes. And having, owning and transporting that gun is in itself already a crime. That gives the police force an easy start to take violent criminals of the street.

Carrying weapons ready to use outside of the boundaries of those activities is strictly prohibited. The police is armed though, and you will spot military police armed with automatic weapons at airports and similar locations. These get much, much better training than in the US though, and when police actually fires it’s national news and an investigation into what happened will most likely take place.

Dutch guy here. gun ownership in the Netherlands is heavily regulated, typically you won't see civilians owning guns, legally - that's only for people who really dedicate to getting through a rigorous track of vetting and getting educated on the subject, and even then there's still a few that somehow manage to slip through the cracks of the system. And even with that system in place, there have been (rare!!!) cases od someone with legal access to a gun snapping and killing people, even a few (again, rare) cases where a police officer snapped and killed people... years ago one police officer ended up snapping, killed his wife and kids. As pointed out, those are rare cases, nowhere near what the US is having - here we have to count in how many years there is between the cases, while the US... well... that 40 dead per day is an average, some day you might have 10 dead, some days 100, every day someone dies from violence is too many. Also, yes, we view that whole NRA thing as "how the fuck can such a thing exist in ANY country"... and then we are reminded that this is a country where someone like Trump could get elected while someone who once got caufgt with a tiny bit of weed tends to lose voting rights and might have to be very careful about not dropping any soap.

In the Netherlands, there is very strict legislation regarding firearms. You can only possess firearms with a permit, and it is very difficult to obtain such a permit. It is even forbidden to possess non-functional replicas. F.i. harmless toy guns aren't allowed since 30 years. Strangely enough, it is allowed to possess air guns without a permit, but you are not allowed to carry them on the street. It is bizarre that there are air guns available that are more powerful than police pistols. That is indeed contradictory.

Other than being an active member of a shooting range / shooting club, another way to be able to own a gun is if you're an active hunter. For this you need to have passed a hunting license test (being able to identify wildlife, and knowing when and where you're allowed to shoot the huntable species); and you need to have access to a hunting range, which is usually a group of farmers so you can shoot invasive species, or a forestry. These are incredibly rare. The rules for storage and transport are the same as for shooting range members: gun and ammo stored and locked seperatedly and annual inspections; shortest route home.
