NRL Analysis: Blocks, reverse blocks and fake blocks

The block shape is one of the most common attacking actions in the NRL, designed to isolate a specific defender in the line and force them into a decision under pressure.
Every club uses block shapes in their attacking systems but the better ones are those who stay ahead of the curve by adding little layers or variations to the traditional setup.
By conditioning defenders to react when presented with a certain look, attacking teams play a game of deception as they try to predict and expose defensive decisions on the other side of the ball.
The reverse block and fake block variations are two recent and relevant examples from the 2024 NRL regular season.

Absolute top quality content. Each to their own of course, but this is way more interesting to me than gossip about players, clubs etc.

Great work. Would love to see a "primer" explaining the elements of these shapes. Many NRL fans don't know what unders/overs means, so a video on that would be very educational for the average punter (similar to "why wingers jam").

It's a numbers game, from the H goal post . That's half of the 13 man team . If markers aren't sliding when the ball is being shifted in a certain direction during an attacking play , the defensive line will need to sort of slide more faster and not effectively so that's when these sort of shapes come In handy. When defense rush to defend they make mistakes which open up the Jockey or link man out the back to pass to either the center or winger. The opposition winger can see all this attacking play and see how the defensive line will be short . So be Jams into the attacking like to disrupt the play

Great video. But why are they called “block” shapes? Doesn’t look like a block. And why the term jockey?

Good question! 😂 Probably various answers to both. I was taught the 'jockey' wraps around the lead with a kind of 'J' shaped run.

Cool that call them Jockey , here in PNG we call them link man or second option , where as the fake block is known as the first option
