Lexical Morphemes are called so as these morphemes has a lexical or dictionary meaning. They fall under content words because these are the words that convey important information in a sentence. These words include Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives and Adverbs. Hence Lexical morphemes are also called Content morphemes. The content words are also called open class words since new words are constantly being added to this class. Therefore we can call lexical morphemes as Open class morphemes.
Functional Morphemes are morphemes that serve a grammatical purpose. For this reason they are also called Grammatical morphemes. Function words are basically Functional Morphemes. Function words include the categories Articles, Pronouns, Prepositions, Conjunctions, Determiners, Auxiliary verbs, Intensifiers and so on. Function words belong to closed class words. They are called so because new words are seldom added to this class. Thus Functional Morphemes are also known by the terms Closed class morphemes.
