Yes! This song was played 24/7 and I couldn't get enough of it. The group has three other chart toppers: Point Of No Return, Should I Say Yes, and Are You Looking For Somebody New. They're a band from Portland Oregon. Their time on the music scene was short but man these songs they released kept me jamming in my youth. Vanessa Williams sampled this song for her song "Happiness". Try Tara Kemp "Hold You Tight" from 1990 during the RnB/swing sound that was hitting radio. I guarantee you will enjoy.
as always thanx for the recommendations - adding them to the list✅ geez, what happened to the band? did they breakup or did their sound get played out?
Empress - it's unfortunate but any artist will become extinct if they don't adapt to an ever-changing music scene. They kept to their roots which was actually adult contemporary/pop/modern day jazz, Kenny G style. They tried to comeback several years later but it didn't spark.
Anyone doing honest reactions would never know when not to stop a track and they really have to do it to break up the track for YT. Not rewinding back 15 secs after stopping is the rookie move.
Loved it then, love it now. This funky little band was out of Seattle. Another of my blue eyed soul faves back then was Teena Marie doing "Behind The Groove" and "I Need Your Lovin' ", Tara Kemp doing "Hold You Tight", and Ta Mara and the Seen (a Minnesota/Prince bunch) doing "Affection". You list is getting looooooooooooooonger.
Hel Gar - Ta Mara and The Seen. I was trying to think of their name while watching this video. Their song Everybody Dance was the jam. Prince's bunch: Vanity 6, The Time, Wendy and Lisa, Apollonia, Sheila E all had their time in the spotlight. Even Sheena Easton had her moment with the duet with Prince "U Got The Look". What a song.
Forgot about that bop .... it’s been so long .... rediscovering how fun it was wit you! 💯 Reminding me of another u need to check out from Debbie Deb .... “Lookout Weekend”
@2:18 lol. I’ve heard this a million times. Just looked up video tonight and was expecting 8” fades, neon spandex and huge gold chains 😂. Never knew this chick was white either.
Empress, I am obsessed with you're videos. Can you please review "don't make me over" by sybil? Also, another good song is "damn, I wish I was your lover" by Sophie B. Hawkins
I think you were born in the wrong decade! Lol! Okay, learning what you like, here are my recommendations: Nu Shoot follow up song "point of no Return". Some other strong female 80s sounds: Bananarama was really good at harmonies. Their two best (in my opinion) "Cruel Summer", and "Venus". And then the group Culture Club added an AMAZING back vocalist, Helen Terry for their song "Church of the Poison Mind". Then there is Alison Moyet's 80s songs "Invisible " and "Love Resurrection". And of course I will continue to recommend ONJ's "The Rumour" (even though I know you're thinking of doing her music chronologically). Keep having fun! :)
😂literally been saying that since I was about 10 years old. Idk what it is - old stuff just really speaks to my soul💯. thanx for these recommendations, I'll get to them someday😄
LOL! You stupid with that intro "you know what time it is..come on come on!" And I see Vanessa Williams paid homage to Nu Shooz with "Happiness" and in the chorus she sang the original "Happiness" that Nu Shooz does at 1:44. I may have to do a "Is it still Fresh" with Nu Shooz and Vanessa!
You should have been there with us back in '86 in the PacNW( Seattle/ Portland), these synthpop magicians had the jump on the GET DOWN!!! Just pull up to da POOLSIDE!!!
You are right, hip hop r&b I remember it being played quite often in 1985 at the Chicken Shack which was a bar owned by some African Americans. It was pretty much right next door to where I lived. Great song.
Funny thing is this was not a hit ..... The original version didn't get any traction as so many of the memorable elements were missing. It was send to Europe were a Dutch producer remade it, and then it finally took off.
We need to give props to the Netherlands for this!!!! It was first released in 1985, but did not do much. Then is got send to the Netherlands as an import song and this Dutch DJ mixed it,.. and it was send back to New York as an import again. Then it blew up. You can all read it in this link we’re Nu Shooz is talking about that. www.popmatters.com/nu-shooz-2020-interview-2646166389.html?rebelltitem=2#rebelltitem2 . So proud of that. Because,... you guessed it,.. I am Dutch . Keep doing the songs you do Miss Empress. You pick the cool rare stuff that nobody reviews. LOVE IT. Here is a Dutch gem that NOBODY has ever reviewed. A new jack swing hip hop style jam called Back by dope demand by the group King Bee. They were the opening act for Madonna blond ambition tour in Rotterdam way back.
If you wanna check out another white blond lady who can sing and looks like she could be your accountant, try Stop by Sam Brown. She was a one-hit wonder but that song was huge back then.
Lol. I was also shocked to find out that white lady was singing this song. I thought it was a trio when I first heard it. Waaaayyyy back in the day. Lol.
IM 64 YEARS OLD THIS WAS THE JAM IN THE 80'S SHE SANG THIS OPRAH SHOW I PLAY MUSIC LIKE THIS AT WORK AND MY COPS LOVE IT THE OFFICE SAYING TURN THAT UP AND DANCING. IM GLAD THIS GENERATION LOVES OUR 80'S MUSIC
Hi Empress! If you liked this song, you will probably like Don't Wanna Fall in Love by Jane Child. She's a white girl from Canada, but she had a really interesting look, and this song was a banger in it's day. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zWd__w5UWVc.html
We had a kid do a dance to this song in the 80s in my super conservative highschool in Virginia. When aids had killed Rock Hudson but before magic Johnson lifted the stigma. Homophobia was on ten. This young gay man danced so amazing and awesome to this song. A song we didn't have on airplay. He danced you know those super conservative beat up the gay boy people were clapping and cheering. They spoke homosexual slurs with glowing respect. It was surreal. This song is powerful. I remember thinking wow that kid is brave. But he knew he could dance. Like Janet Jackson would have hired him on the spot. But I was amazed he bridged cultural chasms with this song.
Nu Shooz were the Bonn for a short while! I’m thinking you would really like, “Let’s Go All The Way” by Sly Fox and “Another Lover” by Giant Steps! Feel Good Music 101:)
I was really lil when this came out, but they were such a big deal here as Portland locals & a fav for me. I had no idea you'd reacted to it... I'm always late to the party 🤣
Anorher awesome jam with amazing vocals from around the same time is "Object of My Desire" by a group called Starpoint. Renee Diggs (lead vocals) could sing her a$$ off. Unfortunately, she passed in 2005.
Ohhh that’s my jam!!! Big hit in the 80’s!! Gurl you on 🔥 rockin that hot tank top 😍. Lookin good! ☺️☺️. Love your reaction. Are you in your back yard? I love me some outside! Nothing like it. I knew you were special doing these videos outside! Oh hell yeah 😀😀😀
Somebody probably already said this but this song was originally released in a very bland version which was the song that the band originally made haha...then some studio remix dudes added all the cool sounding stuff. That takes nothing away from No Snooz. They had a great bed-track. And somebody elevated it to a smash hit. Bravo...
I already saw someone writing about the Dutch Remix...(Yeah I'm Dutch too. :-) ) Now the one you playing is the Dutch Mix/Dutch Remix... The original version wasn't a big succes.... but Dutch Mixmaster/remix legend 'Peter Slaghuis' was asked to do a remix...and thats the one you are playing now and this version became a big hit... It sold more than a million copies...and guess what: Peter Slaghuis only asked 500 dutch guldens for it (around 250 dollar). And they call it the "Dutch Mix", they should have given him more credits for it... Now here's the saddest part... Peter Slaghuis passed away in 1991 in a car accident... He is a legend and did a lot of megamixes/remixes/productions etc...May he rest in Peace
It got remix by a dj by the name of Peter Slaghuis he gave the song a refresh and anded the famous chorus uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh I call it the stutter chorus
Will you please react to Baby Baby by Amy Grant. And react to Don't Disturb This Groove by The System. Awesome reaction your love for music of all kinds and your honesty is very cool imo. You earned a subscriber
This song is definitely a jam. It was released in 1985. The song was actually written by Valerie's husband, John who was also in the band as the guitarist. And if I remember correctly, from what I've read, Valerie and John, along with Rick Waritz, produced the music for it themselves. They didn't use any samples, but _it_ has definitely been sampled, by others, many times.
This song is one of the best songs from the 80s. This song was a rare Pop, R and B crossover hit, It was in alot of R and B radio stations rotations back then
So glad you reacted to this one and Empress, what a great track from Nu Shooz. Love it, so catchy! Would love to hear you react to Go west - "Call Me " and "We Close Our Eyes." Absolute top shelf 80s tracks. Def in my favorites of all time. 😁👍
This holds the distinction of being the most Sampled Song in Music next to "I Can't Go For That By Hall & Oates". It was a Hit on The Pop, R & B Chart and it went to Number One on The Dance Chart. They did American Bandstand, Solid Gold and were one of the very few White Acts to do Soul Train. Even when I go to an Old School Party and I hear the Bass, people scream and run to the Floor.
All the new kids coming up should be thankful for the old school music that has been around if it weren’t for the old school there wouldn’t be all these imitators copying rhythms and lyrics from the old school this new generation is TRASH
Putain 1 nouvelle generation qui connait que dal a la funk mais ecoutes des bouffons de rappeurs raconter que des conneries sur fond de boites à rythmes
