Right! We ran an 8 inch hitch extension and I even modified the jack to place it farther back on the A-Frame. This worked only if the trailer was level and not angled. It still caused fair share of issues and was a major set back on longer trips where we needed to gain access to the back of the Jeep. I have seen several people run the Jack E Up, which appears to be a great aftermarket jack. I would defiantly give the Jack E Go a try, if we still had our T@G. Great story of adventure. Love that you have been rocking the TC since 2016. Traveling out west with our kiddos was a great experience and an awesome way to spend the summer. @@FreysOnTheSide Well, I have a 2019 Geo Pro 12SRK, which stands for 12 ft long, Sofa bed and a rear kitchen. I pull it with a Jeep, 2019 Cherokee Trailhawk. It has a dry weight of 1760 lbs and I load it up to 2300 lbs when I go. I do mostly off grill in bear county, Northern Alberta Canada. I'm approaching 65 this year and I really love this type of camping so I understand why you choose the Tear Drop style of campers. I do some overland but nothing crazy but where I take it, makes me happy. 😃 Thanks for responding. Wow, Alberta Canada! We have never been to the great North but is definitely on our list of places to go. We definitely love the Treardrop style, but end of the day it’s spending time together as a family that counts - bonus we spend it in the great outdoors. We really loved the T@G, but I do see the water storage a major design flaw. Our trailer was several years old, so they may have corrected in recent years? I can appreicate where they put the tap on the water storage (inside the cabinet space), but it should really be rerouted to the bottom to take full advantage of the water. We love having access to water, but another down fall, was we had to run the "pump" to get water. This was a dilemma when you were trying to conserve power. In our TC, its more basic, but we don't need to use power to use water. As we travel more and more off grid, we constantly look as ways to stay out longer and reduce both water and power usage. You da man Drew! Keep up the awesome content on your channel.

I have a 2021 tag boondock and I definitely don't get to use all my water. Haven't measured but I would guess only about half is usable. I'm guessing I can just jack it up more to angle it in need of water

We love our TC and we are now we have spent a good deal of time running it through its paces. End result, we still love it. Our gear we bring is always changing and evolving. Depending on the length of travel, how remote and time of year. We look at backpackers and envious on how little gear they need to survive. Then we look at the large campers with slides and such and think, "boy that's a lot." All in perspective I suppose.

Specifically, to your question, currently the size of our teardrops fits our needs perfect. Our children are still small enough that we can all fit comfortably in the trailer. As the kids grow, we may need to look into a few different sleeping arrangements, but would like to say as minimal as we can. Having a small trailer, keeps things simple, encourages us to be outside and take in the world around us. We are only recreational campers, Although to concept of living full time on the road sounds great, we still enjoy the “anchors” and structure of the day to day grind. If you are considering a TC Teardrop. The trailers are custom build for the client. Options are listed on their website where you can select as much or as little as you desire. They recently moved shops which allows faster product, but production times can still be over a year, plus. In my own opinion worth the wait. If you are at all considering a TC, I’d recommend you put the order in now. There is a 500 down payment, but besides that, no risk.

Absolutely correct. Ultimately finding the trailer that best fits your needs, your budget, and gets you out there exploring is the best option.

Thanks for the positive feedback on our content. Encouraging comments are always great to hear. The outdoors is a great way to bond as a family, but most important message is "experiences over things." The Boreas looks like a well equip trailer, that should provide the comforts of home in the thick of it. Welcome to the small camper world. To answer your specific question, we had an AC in our T@G and we did use it durning the hot summer when we had shore power, but those times were limited. Part of the reason we moved to the TC was a simpler design with less frills. We managed pretty good in the Wisconsin summer with fans, but can get uncomfortable with the four of us in a 120 CUFT space. We opted not to camp one night when we were out west this past summer, when the day temps were well over 100 F. Personally, I prefer comfort, but its a balance on energy usage, maintenance, and set-up. The more we get out in nature, the less we bring. The easier we make it, the more we go. I hope to make a video on that topic (camping made easy) at some point. Maybe in the dead of Wisconsin Winter... Stay safe out there. Thanks for watching and commenting. Absolutely! These two trailer are classified as teardrops, but out starkly different on the intended use.

Thank you as we are loving the TC. The NuCamp has some really nice built in features, but found ourselves not using them and had limited prep space. If you are looking for more space, removing the microwave is the way to go. To remove the microwave, is pretty simple and I made a shelf out of 3/4 plywood. Intentionally, I built it to be reversible, in case we sold. I believe NuCamp even sells a conversion kit, which adds two doors! The short frame is nice on the NuCamp, but not be able to open the tailgate, was defiantly frustrating to see the least. We worked out ways around it, but its awesome not have to worry about it with the TC.

Absolutely. One trailer is not necessary better than the other, its more what best fits your needs. We had our T@G for several years and loved it, but found it was missing features we wanted and had features we never used.

Ah yes. I could see an air conditioner come in handy when living in Arizona. Being from Wisconsin, I would melt. Sounds like you have a very capable, modified T@G! I can only imagine the awesome adventures you get into. Well done! Stay safe out there and happy adventures.

Great point. We like to camp with the “keep it simple” mentality and avoid a lot of tear down and set up. In our case, we found ourselves only using the sink for dishes and not for drinking water, and bringing a secondary source of water. Our style of camping (boondocking) also felt the pump was a energy hog to get water and the limitations of where the pump pulls the water from the tank left a 1/4 of our water stuck in the camper and we had to raise up the front tongue a lot to get the more. The stove, is great to have built in, but on our version the burners are small and we could only cook one thing at a time. We ended up bringing another stove along, so we could cook larger meals. For us, the “built ins” took up valuable real estate and were not overly useful. We found ourselves supplementing them and bring more stuff. The T@G has very little storage in the galley and the counter space was filled with all the extras we were bringing. We are big T@G fans as they are an amazingly built trailer! We are definitely teardrop fans! Staged in the garage, packed for adventure and ready to go at a moment notice. When you get to camp, set up takes minutes to level and your good to go. There are many great brands out there and glad we could expose you to TC. The quality, similar (proven) design and customer service of TC Teardrop is amazing. Comfort is largely subjective, but traveling out west this past summer we hit some “heat advisory” temps. One of nights, we opted out and chose the hotel. Four people in a small space, can make a stuffy sleeping experience. All that said, in my opinion, a fan in the ceiling wouldn’t have helped. With the zip-in doors, side windows screens and two fans, creates plenty of cross ventilation and can sleep “ comfortably” in the typical Wisconsin summer temperatures. Ah yes! Cost! I intentionally shy away from cost, due to the always changing supply and demand. I will say this, a newTC Teardrop will most likely come in far less the an a T@G. Depending on where you live you should be able to find a few T@Gs for sale to get an idea where they land. TC has a really nice website, in which you can build your trailer online and get real time cost. Jump on www.tecteardrops.com to find out more. We are a small camping adventure based channel, so the premise of this video was to bridge the gap on us changing our camper and more of a comparison and why we moved. The video ended up taking off (way more views than anticipated) and brought a few comments of not Apples to Apples or pro/con list, which was not the intent. The bunks are awesome and the kids love them. When I have traveled solo it second as a great storage location for my gear. The more camping we do, the less stuff we bring. Power and water consumption is critical and we focus on reducing usage every trip. Thanks for reaching out and commenting. Would love to hear more about your set up.

@@FreysOnTheSide I have a 2015 Schutt XV-2 trailer with a CVT Denali rooftop tent. Attaching the annex to the rooftop tent is a bit of a pain, but the annex is a great place to hang out at night if you want to escape the bugs and it serves as the sleeping quarters for our two large dogs. Newer versions of my trailer have a slide-out kitchen; unfortunately I don’t have that. My trailer came with an aluminum counter that slides into brackets on the side of the trailer and has a drop in stove and drop in kitchen. Those items sit in my garage and are never used because they take up more space in the trailer, they’re cumbersome, and inconvenient. I use the Camp Chef stove I’ve owned since before buying the trailer. The camp chef puts out doubt the BTU’s as the stove that came with my trailer. For washing dishes and drinking water we carry two 5 gallon Jerry cans (1 mounted on each trailer fender). Our trailer has a 20 gallon water tank and a water heater, which we only use for showers. I bought the trailer used and it came with a Goal Zero Yeti 400 to which I chained three 35 amp hour batteries to increase capacity. I have a 100 watt Goal Zero solar panel, as well as a 100 watt Rockpals solar panel. I like the Rockpals better, as it performs basically the same, but is lighter and more compact. I try to limit it so that our only power consumption is our Snomaster fridge and the water pump when we take showers. I carry the fridge in my truck while driving so as to conserve the trailer’s power supply. I apologize for the novel. Hopefully there is at least something that interests you from my rambling. Lol I like our trailer, but I also really like a lot of the teardrop/squaredrop trailers out there.

You are asking the right questions and good ones? Ultimately, you need to buy a trailer that best fits your needs, your style of camping and adventures. How many people, where and how far you are traveling, what camping systems (gear) you already have, your tow vehicle all play a role. As far as ground clearance, if you are driving on gravel to moderate trails, I’d say ground clearance plays less of a role. But if you are pushing the tow vehicle and teardrop off the beaten trail, more clears the better. My reasoning, is many times when off-roading the trick is running a good line and “putting a tire on it” I.e. putting you tire on a rock to clear it. When pulling a trailer, this makes the effort increasing difficult, because it’s difficult to keep the all the tires (tow and tear) in the right place. Having more clearance, ultimately give you a bit more grace. End of the day, we are very excited about your new teardrop and all the epic adventures it will unfold for you.

TC certainly provides a high quality product for a competitive price. In addition, they provide plenty of options, so you can customize for your needs and fit your budget.

The Runaway Venturist, their off-road model, comes standard with 2 doors and 2 windows in their 6' x 8' model but not with the 4' x 8' model. The larger one has a base price o $10,840 versus the TC Teardrops ORE model has a $17,177 base price but not sure which of the 5 sizes that is for (4 x 8 / 4 x 9 / 5 x 8 / 5 x 9 / 5 x 10)?

@@patrickio8084 TC Teardrop has a very nice webpage in which you can build your trailer to determine the cost with live information. Base ORE (as of 10/21/21) is much lower than 17k and is more around the 9k to 11k depending on size. For the 17k price tag, you probably could have most of the options selected on the large 5x10. Let us know if you have any additional questions on price, but we would recommend you check out their website for the most up to date information.

We run one 90 watt Zamp solar panel. In our experience, that is enough to stay in front of the fridge in sunny conditions.

We love our TC and have enjoyed having it on our adventures over the past year. We did sell our T@G, but haven’t missed it in the least. Since you are close to Wausau, definitely reach out to TC and see if you could schedule a walkthrough. Be sure to tell them you watched some Frey’s On The Side, they will take good care of you.

We had no issues with dust entering the cabin or at least not notable. As far as roof vents, the TC does not have a roof vent and don't necessary agree with "they don't absorb the heat" statement. Inherently, heat rises in the cabin and creates a heat bubble in "all" small enclosed spaces. The concept of the roof vent is to relieve such issue. All that said, do we feel we need a roof vent in the TC? No. Can the space get hot? Yes, but nothing a few battery powered fans can't solve. One of the major reasons we went with the TC was to keep our camping life simple. We wanted less things to manage and less things to go wrong. Placing a penetration on the roof of your camper is a maintenance issue, increases chances of heat or cool loss and increases the risk of water penetration. In summary, would a roof vent be beneficial to a TC, maybe, do we feel it in necessary no.

There is many different options and built perimeters when selecting a TC. Their 5x10 standard cabin has a 7’-1” clear cabin space.

We no longer have our T@G, but if I recall is 6 feet wide in the inside.

I can’t speak to Fantom’s, but the TC is a great trailer and does everything we needed it to do. We have tons of content over the past two years that’s shows our adventures. This past summer we took the trailer on the Colorado BDR and it held up great.

Thanks for stopping by and letting the community know your thoughts. Although, I don't directly state it in the video, it's important to remember the premise of this video. We are a family that moved from a T@G Boondock XL, which is NuCamps "fully loaded" version to an ORE TC Teardrop. We loved the T@G, but moved to the TC for many reasons as our camping needs have changed. Understanding we were comparing apples to oranges, we tried to compare the two trailers and state a few things that we learned along the way. The mods we did on the T@G were done to fit our needs and adjust the factor build and the TC (being a custom Teardrop shop) we were able to customize our build to fit our needs. Another point of clarification we live in central Wisconsin, where the TC's are built, so when we say local labor, it's literally a small business in our home town. End of the day, it's your adventure and it's important to find a teardrop that best fits your needs. Stay safe out there and stay hungry for adventure.

Good question. The ceiling and floor are insulated. The walls are not. It has done great in the warmer climates and we will definitely give it a run this winter.

@@FreysOnTheSide I'm in Canada with a garage built 5x8 that is only insulated in the roof and hatch and we keep plenty warm up the local ski hill or at significant elevation in the mainland mountains early spring. I do use Reflectix under the mattress but we don't have a heater of any sort. I'm in my 70's and wouldn't stand for being cold but we aren't. Ditto in summer...fans and airflow.

@@gt2745 good question. I cant speak to TCs specific reason on their choice in design, but I can say we have camped in upper 90s F and lows of 20s F and have little to no issue maintaining reasonable conditions inside the camper. The roof is insulated, which is where majority of heat loss or gain happens. My personal opinion and one of the reasons we switched was a simpler, functional design that meets our camping style. The Fridges used in TC are Vitrofrigro 65L. The aren’t super common in the US market just yet, but we really like it. We also bought a 35l for our tow vehicle and have had great success. That said we don’t use it all that often, and now have the second fridge listed for sale on Facebook. TC also offer Dometic which is a very solid fridge. And to answer you question, you could buy any fridge that fits within the T@Gs footprint. The only issue we had was the fridge was hardwired to the cabinet, so you may need to pull off a panel or two to access the norcold wiring. I am sure there are people out there that have done that.

We did not select the water heater, but TC does offer it adding a joocla heater with a custom box that mounts on the outside of the trailer. We do have the road shower, which provides warm/hot water via the sun. Works for what we need it for.

@@FreysOnTheSide the one in the tag is the vitro? Yeah I'm so torn between the Rubicon 1200rk vs the 2020 XL LE I found. Ugh LoL! Both have their ups and downs. I like the extra storage on the Rubicon but the tag has the nice speakers/TV and built in stove.. microwave I don't see myself using too much

The fridge in the TC is Vitrofrigro and the T@G is a Norocold, which I believe Nucamp went away from the 12v fridge in later years. Ultimately you have to find a trailer that best suits your needs be camping style. We loved our T@G but are extremely happy with switching to the TC.

The T@G is a really nice teardrop and we really enjoyed our time in it. Your thoughts are similar to ours as we never used the microwave. In fact, for the longest time I had it removed for additional storage, which is something I felt the T@G was short of. The gas burners were also way to close together for multiple pots and such, but I believe they fixed this in later models. They heard the community and made the changes. nuCamp is good when it comes to that.

I am referring to wheel chocks. We have the small set of four and they fit nicely next to the propane tank in the T@G, but had limited space outside of that. On the TC we have a ton of storage with the large storage box up front.

@@FreysOnTheSide We installed the Lock N Roll hitch on our T@G last year. It made all the difference in the world when overlanding. That's the same hitch that you have on the TC.

The hitch allows great versatility and one of the best features when off-roading.

We loved that big window in the TAG, it was nice to gaze up into the sky on a clear night. And reading your previous comment on all the modifications, sounds like you have an amazing set up! We love the screen doors. When it's hot (Wisconsin Hot) there is a ton of mosquitoes and we zip them up and sleep with the doors and windows wide open. With a ton of cross ventilation, it makes sleeping on those nights very nice.

No, I did not include pricing and good question. TC Teardrops has a very nice website in which you can work through the options the fit your needs. They a far more customs trailers then NuCamp and prices vary. That said, the TC Teardrop is generally easier on the wallet.

Good question! We are actually selling our T@G. It would be fun to keep both of them but we don’t have the space and finances to do so.

That would be awesome. The more surface area, the better! It does propose an issue when crumbs and garbage falling between the fridge and rear panel. I believe the back is portion is part of the overall structure of the trailer and provides challenges in creating a tailgate. We do find a benefit to having a deep storage area, almost like a large bin and you don’t have to worry about stuff falling out of cabinets when you open the hatch.

TC makes custom trailers to fit the owner. Don’t quote me, but I believe they can be made close to, maybe even over 7 feet on the inside. Reach out to Todd at TC Teardrops, as he can be more specific. Tell them Frey’s On The Side sent you.

This video is an evolution our adventures filmed several years ago. The video was created as bridge on why we switched from one teardrop to the next for our community and a comparison between them. Ultimately you need to pick a trailer that best fits your needs. In our case it was the TC.

5X10 ORE

I put a clarification in the RU-vid Discerption. Loaded up and ready for adventure we are close to 2400lbs. I switched from dry weight on T@G to loaded weight on TC. Besides that, what did you think of the video. I know you were looking forward to watching.

@@FreysOnTheSide Loved the video, especially the chemistry between you and Andrea. It looks like you 2 have not put out many videos, but the editing quality is so good. Are you fast learners, did one of you have a background in video editing? I thought the content was good, but would have added my favorite feature in the 270 awning and room addition. That protected extra living space was one of the biggest selling points to me. Maybe you could add that to the T@G though. I went back and forth over these two trailers for some time, but came to the conclusion that the T@G was for state park or KOA type campgrounds where the TCT is better suited for off grid, National Forest type, primitive camping. I look forward to your next video adventure. Thanks for the effort you put in to your videos. Maybe the next Lifestyle Overland family?

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the kind words. Andrea and I (more so me) love sharing our story on RU-vid and enjoy the positive feedback. As far as editing I (Matt) am learning as I go. I have no previous experience or background. There is a great deal more to learn, which my goal it to be polished like the "big guys". The awning and side tent is a HUGE benefit and defiantly one of our favorite features. To your point, you could add this to the T@G, but its really nice you can add it right from TC. We plan to make a separate video showing the full camp set-up, but waiting to camp in an awesome location with epic drone shots to show it off - probably some time this fall. I do think the TC gains some serious steam when it comes to dispersed camping and tackling some of those tougher trails. As far as the next Lifestyle Overland, we are a long ways off, but again thank you for the kinds words. For now, we will share our story with all those who want to listen and be respectful to our content.

We will head to a scale to get the exact weight, but fully loaded, it’s definitely way heavier.

I believe on their web site dry weight is about 1200. But how we have it set up definitely adds a great deal of weight.

@@mailboxrule Great question! I did end up taking my trailer on a CAT scale. Making another assumption, but probably had about 200 lbs of ton weight yet, putting the trailer right at 2200 lbs. Okay, with all that said, we have a ton (100's of lbs) of weight that could be shed. I don't know how you plan to travel with your TC, but below is a list of items that could definitely be trimmed down. Note: I don't know the specifics of weight for each items. Road Shower - This thing is heavy, especially with 7 gallons of water in it. There are way lighter solutions. We have two awnings. I would have a hard time picking which one to get rid of, but you almost need the 270 to work out of the galley in inclement weather. We are running 35 inch KO2, which are known for being very heavy tires. And my matching rims are no light option either. We also have the ORE version, which has a bigger axle. At the time of the weigh-in, I had a 2000i generator in the tongue box. Knowing what I know now, there is no need for this unless you are doing a 5 plus day with no sun. We have bunks inside, which again could shave maybe 100 lbs. I am sure I am missing a few things, but this gives you a good idea of what I think "adds up". As we go out more, we continue to reduce the amount of "stuff" we bring. Always a learning process. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

If your height is a concern, TC standard cabin layout in a 5x10 is 7’-1”. Since I am shorter we optioned a full wardrobe at the front of the cabin. TC has a pretty good website you can look through and a great Facebook page showing the options.

The teardrop world is vast and it's important to find a trailer that best fits your needs. We live in Wisconsin, which has mild summers and often camp off-grid. For those two reasons we seldom used the AC. Although the sink is nice, in order to use the water, it uses a pump, which was power drain and how the tank is constructed only allows you to use about half the water storage. We like having a collapsable sink to not take us counter space. Use it when we need it and put it away when we don't. Our goal is to travel farther off-grid and stay their longer. Again, it is about finding a trailer that suits your needs and not saying one trailer is better then the other.

Interesting. Never been, but I would imagine their access to dispersed camping with amazing views is limited.

@@FreysOnTheSide Actually they have cable TV, running hot & cold water, a shower, heat & A.C, sanitation......a window in each cell. Four people shoved in a teardrop is ridiculous.

Sounds amazing, but I’ll stick to our teardrop, our access to spectacular places, ease of camping and leave the spectacular prison life to the criminals.

The T@G is one of the most sold commercial teardrop and it captures a wide range of camping/family needs. We really enjoyed the T@G for 3 years, but for our family we wanted something that was more rugged, off-road capable and less of a phantom energy hog. The trailer is built with simple concepts giving it the "home made" feel, but all through I am pretty handy, I don't think I could make this trailer my garage. The benefits of simple design, allows me to work on the trailer, alter to our needs and easy find replacement parts when a long ways from home. End of the day, you need to find a trailer that fits your needs. The small camper world is awesome and expansive. Best of luck in your adventures!

You bring up a good point. The T@G really is set up for more campground style camping, not to say it doesn’t function off the beaten trail. Not sure what weights you are looking at, but I misspoke in the video. The 5x10 ORE (the TC we have) is there largest model. Full loaded, water, food and the “kitchen sink” weighs in around 2200lbs. They make several different models that are smaller and lighter weight.

@@FreysOnTheSide Gotcha. I was just going by the "2200" in the video. Just looked at the spec sheet, and the dry weight is absolutely manageable. I would need to keep it under 1600 to be comfortable in the mountains towing with my Subaru Outback (I don't have the turbo).
