Can potassium iodide (KI) pills protect you from radiation? KI will only protect you from radioactive iodine. It does not protect you from other kinds of radioactive material. KI works very well to protect your thyroid gland. However, it protects only your thyroid, not other parts of your body.

@@darkstar861 For thyroid protection, it's the ticket. And if you shop around before everyone goes ape, it's not that expensive. Ask your local pharmacist to look it up. Their "standard" brand is costly, but other brands are far more reasonable.

Iodine pills do NOT protect you from radiation. They provide your thyroid with all of the iodine it needs so that it will not absorb any more iodine you happen to consume from the environment. Iodine such as I-131 which is generated by a fission bomb. If I-131 gets into you and you are already saturated with non-radioactive iodine the I-131 will just pass through. You are still being exposed to the beta decay (which includes some gamma), just not for as long because the I-131 atoms don't become lodged in the thyroid. But they are still inside you as they pass through, killing or mutating (potentially causing cancer) in your tissues along the way. Iodine pills won't protect you from beta, alpha, gamma or any other radiation as a direct result of the explosion or the many other fission byproducts. Fortunately I-131 has a half-life of only 8 days (half of it decays every 8 days). If you can isolate yourself from the fallout for a couple weeks you'll be fine. Basically, the iodine pills are useless. The only proper thing to do is to hide out in a fallout shelter. You are more likely to make yourself sick with the iodine pills than to protect yourself from radiation. If you are in a situation where you need protection from I-131 then you need protection from a whole lot more as well. So just skip the pills and plan to be in a fallout shelter. @@tracyrreed you are right. In order for them to work you are basically overdosing on them, because your thyroid has to be full of it. It cannot tell the difference so it will absorb the isotope.

Any suggestions as to where might be a neutral spot to escape? Antarctica is too cold and remote to get supplies to if the globe goes to heck. If it was warmer/had fertile soil, then that'd be my first choice. It doesn't seem like any industrialized countries have good governments or motives anymore. I trust no one.
