Monday, October 17, 2022, at 6:00 PM ET: As Ukraine’s military advances and Putin threatens to conduct nuclear strikes, President Biden said last week: “For the first time since the Cuban Missile Crisis, we have a direct threat to the use of nuclear weapons, if in fact things continue down the path they'd been going.”
Nina Khrushcheva, professor of international affairs at the New School and granddaughter of Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev, David Ignatius, foreign affairs columnist at The Washington Post, and Graham Allison (AB '62 PhD '68), Douglas Dillon Professor of Government, will review lessons from the Cuban Missile Crisis that illuminate the challenges the US now faces and can inform the choices President Biden is now considering.

No, the Reagan administration was extremely belligerent in the early 1980s leading up to the Able Archer 83 exercises. It was only because of one Soviet officer, Stanislav Petrov, that the USSR and the US avoided nuclear war. A way, way closer call than 1962. But you can't blame that crisis on the Russians, so naturally Americans ignore it, if they've even ever heard of it.

I am surprised that HKS has not yet held a similar event on Azerbaijan's recent invasion into Armenia proper and its continued war crimes supported by Turkey, which have claimed approximately 6,000 innocent Armenian lives since 2020 -- the per-capita equivalent to 683,000 American lives, more than double the U.S. death toll in WWII.

I hope this "HKS" is not part of the real Harvard university. This fear mongering is like the worst junk journalism that infests the MSM. Do NOT hire Harvard grads.

Turkey and Azerbaijan are American allies; if anything, the US approves of what's going on in Armenia because it undermines CSTO and opens up another trouble spot on the Russian frontier. Ask the Kurds what happens when you place your trust and faith in the US to do the right thing.

"Incredibly admirable, charismatic, world leading figure, President 'elenski.." What a steaming pile of complete, nonsense in the face of it all. Tell that to all his victims.

There are few or no similarities between the CMC and the conflict in Ukraine. The better comparator would have been the Munich accords of 1938 or perhaps the Molotov Ribbentorp pact of 1940. Putin and Lavrov have both repeatedly made clear Russia would only use nuclear weapons in defense of Russia itself, and then only in the case of use of nuclear weapons or the disintegration of the Russian federation. Meanwhile, Russian rockets have repeatedly proven unreliable: failing to launch, failing to reach their targets, and failing to detonate. This is a generalized problem throughout the Russian military due to rampant corruption and lack of maintenance. Moreover, no "negotiated solution" is possible no "off ramp" exists because one cannot negotiate with a partner who repeatedly lies and betrays all their past agreements. Even if Putin were other than a pathological liar, who negotiates with mass murderers, robbers, and rapists? If soemeone broke into Your home, raped your wife, murdered your kids, and stole your silver would You "negotiate". Basically the lecture is inapposite. This ends with Putin Dead or in the docket for War Crimes. Likelists his own people will "remove" him, one way -- or other.
