#3: 13:17 minor Major mashup
#4: 18:48 Princely step up minor triads
Hey guys! Its your good buddy, Uncle Ben Eller, here with a very special installment of Weekend Wankshop in which we do a deep dive into the style of one of my favorite players: Nuno Bettencourt of EXTREME! When i got Extreme II: Pornograffitti, i was blown away by Nuno's awesome fusion of funk, rock, and metal playing styles; i immediately started learning the title track off the album, and trying to figure out what made it sound so funky and cool! It wasn't until years later when i learned how to analyze things harmonically that i understood why his tricks sounded the way they did. And on today's lesson, i'm going to show you all 4 of the most important things i took from this song, and how i apply them to my own playing! You're gonna learn the intervallic, scalar, and chord secrets that make his incredible playing tick, plus how to rip them off and repurpose them in your own playing! Its a hoot AND a holler!
Playing my Cotton Candy Randy Suhr Modern into the Fractal Axe FX III. Don't forget to download the patch on the Patreon page!

I saw Extreme live a few years ago, went without knowing much about them at all, friend had a spare ticket. I've seen quite a few bands live, but this is the first time I'd seen a proper virtuoso guitarist live. Nuno's *intimidatingly* good, I was in absolute awe the whole show.

This is the best guitar instructional channel I've found so far. Ben's mixture of instruction and humor hits all the right "notes" (pun intended). I see so many channels that just spew "play the third fret on the 2nd string, followed by the fifth fret on the 1st string". There is none of that here. It's theory presented in a fun and entertaining manner.

I was in a Funky metal type band in Charlotte in the lat3 80's. We just came out of the studio and the local station Fox was playing some of our stuff on a local rock show, we listened one night we knew they were gonna play us, we did not realize we were the last on that show and they played "Kid Ego" right after us, we were all quite after thinking they were a local band too that blew us away!! Thankfully we found out who they were or I might have hung it up right there!! All these years later and I'm still learning his licks!

That album came out when I was 22 yrs old...it was a total game changer. I worked at a Sound and Lighting company filled with Big Haired Heavy Metal guys....me I was a little old Blues Rock throw back playing SRV, Johnny Winter and Southern Rockers. The Virtuoso Shred heads were all blown away, one guy the "king of the shred hill there" who had a CBS Record deal decided it was time to hang up the big hair and go do country LOL.... the first time I heard it I was totally floored. It became my go to sound check album when I installed Sound systems in night clubs.....The Dynamic range between the ultra heavy bass and Nuno's leads was a great way to tweek and good system, on the opposite end when I installed CHEAP speakers I sound checked them with "Everybody Dance Now" because I could always make that sound "good" (enough) and I wanted to get the check and go home LOL

So, you begin the video stating that you tuned down a 1/2 step..But later, you are identifying chords, etc. as being what they are in a normal tuning..Now, I get that the chord shape is what you probably mean, but tuned down a 1/2 step changes the actual key...You might want to mention that for the benefit of those who may not realize the difference..Nuno is bad ass..I remember hearing Rest in Peace in the 90's and being impressed..Fast forward a number of years, where I took myself out of music for a few years..I had a reboot and got back into it and at some point remembered that tune and got back into it on You Tube..The rhythm parts came fairly easily, but the guitar solo is a monster, and eventually found an excellent vid on how to play it..It took me a while to get each section, and then everything together..I played that tune at least a couple of hundred times to get it to about 98%, but it was worth it just for ear training and being able to apply some of those techniques to other stuff I was into..I'm not a big fan of dropping the tuning or drop d, but I did give it a shot way back and concluded it was more trouble than it was worth..On a related issue, the 'Experience Hendrix' Tour came through here, and I didn't go, but checked some footage from earlier in the tour to see if I missed something special..I did not..I turned the st, but the tour should have uff on and had an axe to play along (might as well)..It didn't take me long to realize everything they did was not in the key Hendrix played the songs in, nor was the treatment particularly close to Hendrix style but more of whoever was playing any particular song..There were quite a few respected players involved, but the tour should have been called The sort of, maybe we'll casually do some Hendrix tunes...Experience Hendrix?? Nope, but that's just me..

Great stuff, as always! This kind of analysis of the intervals and notes themselves is a gold mine of information, and something I hope you keep doing more of! I fairly recently stopped trying to learn pattern after pattern, and really set myself to learning the note and intervallic makeup of everything I play and practice, letting the patterns happen more in the background. The difference to my understanding of what I'm working on has been HUGE. And I'm learning my keys, chords, and scales much better all over the neck (as well as simply learning the notes of the fretboard much, much better).
