April 3-6,1946 saw the testimony of Defendant Wilhelm Keitel, Chief of the High Command of the Armed Forces (OKW). The direct examination was conducted by his attorney Dr. Otto Nelte who tried to show that Keitel was a soldier above all.
He was cross examined by Russian chief counsel General Roman Rudenko regarding his relationship with Hitler.
Sir David Maxwell-Fyfe next cross examined Keitel regarding treatment of prisoners of war.

To underscore the criminal rather than military nature of Keitel's acts, the Allies denied his request to be shot by firing squad. Instead, he was executed at Nuremberg Prison by hanging. The facial blood stains seen in a photo of Keitel's corpse were due to the trapdoor being too small, causing him and several others of the condemned to suffer head injuries through hitting the trapdoor during the drop. For many of the executed Nazis that fell from the gallows at Nuremberg there was insufficient force to snap their necks, resulting in a macabre, suffocating death dance struggle that in Keitel's case lasted 24 minutes.

Ah, Wilhelm Keitel. Among his most well-known (and unflattering) nicknames were: "The Chuckler", as many stated his real job was to laugh at Hitler's bad jokes; "The Nodding Ass", based off a children's toy whose head bobs up and down when you pull a string attached to it; and, most commonly, "Lakeitel", a fusion of the German word for lackey ("lakei") and his name. He was a petty bully to his subordinates, and a shameless ass-kisser to his superiors. Hermann Goering described him thusly: "a sergeant's mind in a general's body." He was so looked down upon that, when a junior officer (who was unfamiliar with him) passed by him without saluting and later panicked when he learned who he was, General Franz Halder brushed it off, saying, "Don't worry. It's only Keitel."

2:00-4:23: RUDENKO: Should we not, therefore, conclude that you, with your thorough military training and great experience, could have had an opportunity of influencing H*tler very considerably in solving questions of a strategic and military nature, as well as other matters pertaining to the Armed Forces? KEITEL: No. I have to declare in this respect that, to a degree which is almost unimaginable to the layman and the professional officer, H*tler had studied general staff works, military literature, tactical, operational and strategic studies, and that he had a knowledge of military matters which can only be called astonishing. Perhaps I may give an example, and the remaining officers of the Wehrmacht will confirm this, that he was so informed about organization, armament, leadership, equipment of all armies and, what is more remarkable, of all navies of the globe that it was impossible to prove any error on his part. And I have to add that also during the war, when I came into his proximity at the headquarters [Wolfsschanze], H*tler studied during the nights all the big general staff works by Moltke, Schlieffen and Clausewitz and from them gained his autodidactic knowledge of things. Therefore we had the impression: Only a genius can do that.

@pauldazar3348

Sunil Sharma • Nuremberg had nothing to do with revenge. The German army behavior in WWl was brutal. In a speech that Kaiser commanded his troops to be like THE HUNS, to create panic and terror even before showing up. With the Nuremberg trials the allied wanted to make sure that this time, unlike WWl, the perpetrators of war crimes and crimes against humanity would be punished for their deeds and to prevent future sociopathic diabolical crimes. That's why the overwhelming majority of those monsters were denied execution by firing squad.
