Having visited this court, it was very interesting to see part of the trial. This is also shown in the museum attached to the court. Thank you for showing it.
The British executor, Arthur Pierrepont, performed his duty to the letter of the law. The American executor was inhebriated for most of the time and in a worse state whilst performing the executions. He botched so many hangings that he was sent back to the states in disgrace.
Compared to the suffering and death they inflicted, the Nazi war criminals got off easy. They weren't worked to death, or starved, or gassed, or tormented and constantly deprived. Their captors didn't hollow out their souls and their desire to live.
@@zombieda6855 Not to mention how the Americans saw with disgust all the racism and superiority claims by the Germans when they had everything divided for colour and white people.
George Vassiltchikov, who was quoted in the video because he was an interpreter at the trials, was the brother of both Marie Vassiltchikov, whose Berlin Diaries are a must read, and Tatiana von Metternich, whose Purgatory of Fools is also a must read.
I wanted to mention a double DVD set put out by ARTE France in 2006 called Nuremberg:The Nazis Facing Their Crimes that contain extensive actual footage of the first Nuremberg trial. The American Chief Prosecutor Robert H Jackson did a fine job, but he was strongly aided by staff lawyer Thomas Dodd who had a brilliant mind and an individual the legal defense of the accused were genuinely afraid of. The films shown at the trial were very important, but when Thomas Dodd brought an actual shrunken head of a concentration camp prison made by a particularly sadistic Nazi, the effect was overwhelming. The book Letters from Nuremberg by Christopher J Dodd presents his Father's letters home to his beloved wife during the trial and are excellent first-hand descriptions of what happened at the trial.
@@Goodiesfanful Shrunken heads seem historically to be confined to north west Amazonian region of South America. In Dachau concentration camp, a Nazi doctor-I think his name was Enno Lolling- ordered his staff to experiment with making shrunken heads, and at least three of them were made
Very pragmatic and fair commentary. Excellent in every aspect from my perspective 👍 Well done, I subscribed based in this and several other works you have presented.
It would have been a worldwide televised trial if they had TV at the time. The Adolf Eichmann trial in the 1960s was televised worldwide, perhaps taking its cue from Nuremberg.
I am glad that those film footages of the Nuremberg war crimes were saved for all posterity to see. We need to remember the lessons of World War 2 and why the Nazi war criminals were prosecuted for the barbaric acts of genocide, plunder, and oppression.
And who is now prosecuting the USA and UK for their warcrimes? They haven't done something as terrible as the Holocaust, but they killed millions of people since 1945.
Fully noted was the anti-American snub of the filming of the trial receiving a Hollywood movie treatment. It might interest the maker of this clip that the Hollywood of today is NOT the Hollywood of The Golden Years, especially wartime 1940s. Holding Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List as the REAL Hollywood in Neon ignores the time when American film really was Art. Churchill's remark of the movie "Mrs.Miniver" being more important to the UK than a fleet.of destroyers in drumming up support of England, at that time standing alone against the Nazis. The same director, William Wyler's film The Best Years of Our Lives was the Ultimate in describing the experience of Vets coming home. Director Wyler was one of them, rejecting his enormous 1930s salary for a fraction of it and flying missions over Germany in planes so cold frostbite was common. He also came home completely deaf in one ear and partially deaf in the other.
@@Waldemarvonanhalt Hollywood and The Legion of Decency has a back history that most I meet are unaware of. The Stock Market Crash.happened in 1929. President Hoover's view was "These things take care of themselves." Except they didn't, but only got worse and worse. Going to movies was much more frequent then, with no TV. There was radio, and that was all. As The Great Depression worsened, Hollywood was in the worst financial trouble it ever was. The studios and the movie theaters they ran has just spent a fortune$$ to update theaters to show sound, or "talking" pictures. Now there audiences were staying home en mass. Even cheap movie tickets were unaffordable to those without food for their families ( no welfare or social support existed then). So Hollywood did for them what was a practical solution- they upped the sexual content in movies considerably to get paying customers. Which brought in the Legion of Decency. In our current 21st Century world of Way Too Much with nothing left to the imagination- that might look appealing to some- except they went So Far the other way, that married people could not be shown in bed without a foot on the floor; Villains must Always be punished, which takes away any realism and brings about Fairy Tale Land. Lots of other "rules." When FDR took office in 1933- it did help, and movie tickets were bought again
@@colleencupido5125 I think you misunderstand my comment. I'm speaking in favour of the Legion of Decency, who managed to catch the letches of Hollywood at just the right time. Hollywood had financially exhausted itself and gone into debt by financing the development of talking pictures. They were vulnerable and the Legion was able to hit them hard with boycotts, making them agree to a moral code for film that wasn't broken until the release of "Pawnbroker" in the 1960s. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qQeRu7BUEr8.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YTjEeg6AmCw.html

Why was it filmed? For prosperity,I was born in 1946, these trials were in force when I was born, taught about it in school, now the snowflakes can't see it,too scary for them! It pains me they aren't taught, dismiss the crimes of the past to maybe repeat them !
Not sure which snowflakes you are referring to, but in my history class I am proud to have been taught the swift justice these murderers were given. It's a shame some scientists like von Braun were given a new life after the war, especially when they used concentration camp slave labor for production.
What are you talking about? These films are played in schools, as are multiple different documentaries and movies about WWII and the Holocaust. I graduated in 2010 and remember seeing all this - as do my friends who graduated years later. Why do the older generation love to complain so much about things they have no clue about?
Honestly its just because people dont care too much about history being an actual academic subject. I can learn history online, or in a library. Zero point in doing it for a whole 5 years in school.
@@kamrynm9780 more of a shame then you realize. As a canadian i look at north america and especially our southern neighbors.....yeah they 'won' the cold war/space race. At what cost? You cannot fight such evil, then bring its brilliant (heinous and evil can be brilliant) minds into your own society, in respected positions....that 'greatest generation' made a mistake. They let those people be taken alive. They got some of that cancer on them, brought it home and gave it succor. And it grew and spread. Even as 'civil rights movement' came forward, things in the rooms of power and intellect moved the other way. The idealogy survived grew and to some level thrived. Better those scientists and 'think tankers' had their brains splattered all over the dirt instead of doing as ordered and taking em alive. America became the host for the infection. And it grew again, more carefully this time. It learned.
Especially the part where it mentioned that not all were brought to justice As the video started & they mentioned doctors, industrialists etc it instantly made me wonder whether even back then those at the highest in the hierarchy paid for what they did.
If this wasn’t for the worst crimes committed in human history, the actions of Rudolph Hess are something you’d expect to see on a Monty Python sketch. I of course am talking about his actions that lead to his capture.
I think that you will find that this was just one part of the Allied plan for the occupation and government of Germany after it's defeat. This had been planned from at least 1943 and possibly earlier. A lesson learnt from the First World War, that you can't just walk away and leave a defeated enemy to fester in resentment and self-pity.
And now 2.0 trials are under way as speak! This one will be way bigger then the first !! It needs to happen now they have the documentation and evidence to do so!
this is what should have happened in america after the Civil War. Slaveowners should've been put on trial and films should've been produced to show the hell that slaves in American chattel slavery experienced
Slavery existed in the USA for 73 years prior to the Civil War. Its practice was sanctioned by law. It would have been highly hypocritical of the US government to try individuals who took part in a legally sanctioned practice. Your argument is a false equivalency.
@@Scrapmanluke1 The Nazi regime literally made all of these war crimes legal. It’s in the indictments in the military tribunals. Just because it was legal doesn’t mean they couldn’t be tried for it, as we see here. For heavens sake, the trials even classified some of the concentration camp victims as slaves. It’s not a hard connection.
@@raqueliaramlogan9939 There were slave codes in slave holding states which regulated treatment of slaves, and slave holders could be tried for violation of those codes.

A myth that people of Germany didn't knew about concentration camps but in reality they very well knew about it because it used to make into daily newspaper and also reports of some of execution also made it to newspaper. Of course the news related to executions were presented as different manner but they very well knew about concentration camps
There is knowing and knowing. They knew on some level but the sheer SCALE was not understood. You were told the people taken were spies, saboteurs, treasonous. For a long stretch of it til the end, the nazis kept a good lid on what it actually was. Did the german people have some idea? Absolutely, absolutely or else movements like...hell i cant remember her name, but White Rose Society or something like that, wouldnt have existed. But most german people couldnt have imagined in their worst nightmares the depths and scale of the depravity. So again there is 'knowing' a thing and actually knowing it.
It was filmed so it may be used again in history.. like wut is happening now... make believe of the illusion of justice so the same can strike again later and keep the show rolling.. all.about deceit imo
The reason is because if it wasn't someone somewhere sometime would say it never happened. Just like we see today with anything that isn't filmed and even sometimes when it is.
I despise the idea that the victorious side gets to judge the defeated one. While this is a milestone for the history of universal laws, it is far from being just and unbiased. If it was, the very same prosecution should have been hunting down uk’s bombings on civilians, usa’s use of nuclear weapons on japan or even japan’s crimes in Indochina and many other places etc.
@@sparks3430 you don't nuke a country, you nuke people. Reducing people to being on the side of the rulers of said country, and therefore deserving of being nuked is wrong.
@Johann Sebastian Bach you are trying to put words into my mouth. Civilians are civilians, whether they are on your side or not. This isn't about Hitler or Hirohito, this is about the morality of bombing a city with no military signifigance. There was no major military installations in Hiroshima or Nagasaki. The USA spread propaganda about WW2 being about freedom while still racially segregating whites and "colored" people. Many European countries said the same while treating people in their colonies in equal to or worse conditions as Hitler. So, being from a region where it was a choice of if you wanted Hitler, Hirohito or Churchill as your slave owner, and not a choice between freedom or tyranny, such trials are just propoganda for the victors. The people who designed the bomb, choice Hiroshima and Nagasaki because their bomb could level the entire city, and would showcase the might of the atom bomb and make the Japanese surrender. This was justified because they were firebombing Tokyo and killing thousands of civilians already.
anyone know if there was something like this for the imperial japanese? they were even more brutal than the nazis towards koreans, chinese, philippines
