Nusa Lembongan is a picturesque island located southeast of Bali, Indonesia, forming part of the Nusa Penida district alongside Nusa Penida and Nusa Ceningan. Known for its vibrant tourist infrastructure, Nusa Lembongan is the most famous among these islands, attracting visitors with its white sand beaches, low limestone cliffs, and coral reefs. The island spans approximately 8 square kilometers and has a population of around 5,000 people.
Administratively, it falls under the Klungkung Regency and is one of the three small offshore islands that make up the district. The island's economy thrives on tourism, with Nusa Lembongan being a renowned surfing destination offering world-class waves at spots like Shipwrecks, Lacerations, and Playgrounds. It's also a prime location for scuba diving and snorkeling, thanks to its rich marine biodiversity.
Transportation on the island is primarily through scooters and foot due to its compact size, with regular direct speed-boat services connecting it to Bali. Despite its focus on tourism, Nusa Lembongan also supports subsistence agriculture, fishing, and, until recently, seaweed farming.
Conservation efforts are crucial to the island, with initiatives aimed at preserving its marine life and coral reefs. The local community, supported by NGOs and The Nature Conservancy Coral Triangle Center, actively participates in marine conservation, highlighting the importance of sustainable tourism practices to ensure the island's natural beauty remains intact for future generations.
