Good info. I like the idea to use the feeler gauges to mark how deep to file.

Many thanks for this. Excellent instruction! I especially appreciate the thumb rule for the location of the outboard strings. And the use of the string spacing ruler was explained very well.

I file down the height of every slot to the depth just before string touch the 1:st fret, when playing an open string. Then you get a very easy played guitar, almost every time lower string height and you dont need to use any specific measurment. It is different in every guitar. I have done this for 40 years and always got easy playing guitars as a result. Rock on and Happy new Year!

Love the depth gauging system with string off cuts. I am heading to the basement shop to make similar gauges!

Picked up a few good pointers and some things I like to do differently. Like to cut a softer angle on top (5-6 degrees?) then roll off the back in the direction of the tuners. Slightly flatter slots is more material for the strings to cut through. Because slots do slowly get deeper over time. Have a 40 year old guitar with the original nut and frets and the slots look like the grand canyon. But amazingly they still function.

Makes you wonder why guitar makers don't always include a zero fret.
@runrin_
@runrin_ 6 месяцев назад
probably because the tension on the zero fret causes it to wear very quickly which means it must be leveled and replaced more frequently than the other frets. this is a problem even with stainless steel frets.
@hariowen3840
@hariowen3840 6 месяцев назад
@@runrin_Pressure alone does not cause fret wear, friction does - otherwise the same problem would apply to the nut, which in most cases is a much softer material than a fret and therefore much more susceptible to wear.

I love zero frets and will be putting one on a used Gretsch I just picked up.
@DavidBostock-ti2fv
@DavidBostock-ti2fv 5 месяцев назад
@@spleantrampoline I bought 4 very old USSR Ukrainian acoustic / classical 3/4 short scale (24") with wooden nuts that are all messed up. All have zero frets, but the zero frets are same height as all the other frets. I don't understand why they would do that at all. I anticipate I will completely re-fret one of them and per web advice use jumbo stainless for the zero frets and a hair higher than the nuts, which may not work all that great either, I've been reading about nut compensation as well, so still not sure what I will do.

Thanks for a very good video. I have made lots of guitar nuts and more often than not I end up filing a couple of the slots too low. My OCD kicks trying to get the action at the nut as low as possible with just a few more file strokes. You’d think I would learn. 😢
@HighSpeedirt1
@HighSpeedirt1 5 месяцев назад
Yup, same hear. I keep extra nuts in my stockpile for those OCD occasions. Also, keep in mind that the wound strings have a wider oscillation and need a taller gap at the first fret to prevent open string buzzing.

Getting the nut right is one if not the most important things you can do to get your axe dialed in . But it is not easy It can take me up to a week to get mine dialed. String it play it string it play it. Good luck Great video dude thank you

I have a set of the same files, but the high B and E files suck because they cut basically square bottom slots. The others are a bit uneven too, but acceptable. The square slots are useless as the strings will vibrate sideways and make strange noises. I actually curved the cutting edge by filing/rounding off the corners of the teeth, which was an improvement though they don't cut as well.

That's good info as well, thanks. I'm thinking about investing in a set of files. I guess, like most things, you get what you pay for.

I still remember the first time I saw a Floyd Rose style locking nut, and being surprised that there wasnt a proper nut slot or forward edge involved.Then the first time I saw locking tuners, and realizing that they really weren't " locking" anything, - they were just making poor string winding more difficult. Nice demo, - and if you didn't quite get it, - being a one time thing, - cutting the nut properly is a process; you prob shouldn't plan on rushing it, and getting on to finishing something else . Ironically, I've found that with pro tools made for the task, it can be actually easier to make mistakes.Their efficiency needs to be well controlled.

Very infoemative video but I was wondering, Should I splay the back side of the nut to match the path the string follows through the nut to the machinehead post to prevent binding. You cut a downward angle to match the angle of the headstock but the tuners are not in a straight line behind the nut. Would this be benificial or am I overthinking the process? Your thoughts on the subject please.

Wouldn't be much accurate 100% this procedure is done by a robot so to avoid any kind of error. Not doubting the operator or the technician knowledge and skills but since we are humans and there are other factors might alter our performance and it could help opening other fields where the outcomes even much better !! Please do accept our gratitude and appreciation for sharing your knowledge and skills thank you, best regards from ENGLAND.

When you are filing the nut, with the feeler gauges under the strings, should the angle of the file match the angle of the headstock? Thus taking the string to the angle as it follows the headstock as to goes to the tuner?
@maplebones
@maplebones 6 месяцев назад
The angle needs to be more than the headstock angle. The strings should only touch the edge of the nut.

Hello, are 7 thousandths of an inch for all frets? or each fret has a different measurement. Is the fret height x would be x plus 7 thousandths of an inch on each fret?

I don't like the string spacing ruler. It doesn't take the string gauge into account. Better to calculate the spacing based on the string gauges.

Not easy. I just wasted 2 blanks and then miss-cut the 3rd blank twice, sanding down the miss cuts each time. Third try now and if this one goes wrong there won't be enough nut height and I'll have to start from scratch.
