Can the right diet really help prevent dementia? In this webinar, Dr Catherine Hughes from Ulster University talks about how nutrition can help protect the brain and prevent against dementia. Dr Hughes discusses the latest scientific research indicating that the Mediterranean and MIND diet reduce the risk of developing dementia in older people. She also discusses how specific components within food such as omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, polyphenols, vitamin D and B-vitamins can also protect the brain and prevent dementia. Sour cream is normal cream from dairy that has been soured. It is very high in fat and cholesterol so should be avoided.

Does mackerel and salmon in tin count as oily fish?

She said at the end that they were. Remember though that fish today contain high amounts of mercury and other pollutants, including microplastics - and the larger the fish (higher on the food chain) the higher the amounts of pollutants. They are also still high in cholesterol. Alternatives are freshly ground (or ground and kept in freezer)flax seeds mixed into your porridge and supplements made from seaweed. The supplements guarantee you get the actual DHA and EPA that the body and brain needs whereas although we should eat some nuts and seeds daily your gut needs to be healthy enough to covert the nutrients to the essential fatty acids. The more oils you eat from packaged meals and takeaway food the more out of balance your body will be as far as omega 6 and omega 3. We generally get too much omega 6 from the veg oils used commercially in frying etc so we need more omega 3 from things like chia seeds and flax seeds and seaweed based omega 3 supplements.

Should males in their early late 20s, early 30s be consuming soya products?

Soy only contains phytoestrogens which are not harmful and are actually beneficial. Best to stick with soy milk and other products made with whole soy beans and not soy protein isolate though. Dairy actually contains cow estrogen from often pregnant cows, which is more likely to cause problems that people often wrongly blame on soy. The other thing to watch out for is reusing plastic water bottles, or leaving a reusable plastic bottle in the car where it gets warm, plastic takeaway containers, microwaving in plastic due to the estrogen mimicking chemicals they can emit. Even now that we have BPA free containers - and I would still use them over BPA containing plastic, the chemicals used in plastic instead have not been fully studied to show that they don't also cause problems.
