Nutritional strategies to enhance mitochondrial adaptation to endurance exercise
Author: Philp, A.
Garvan Institute of Medical Research
Abstract:
Endurance exercise, when performed regularly as part of a training program, leads to increases in whole-body and skeletal
muscle-specific oxidative capacity. The increase in mitochondrial biogenesis (increased volume and functional capacity) following
endurance training is fundamentally important as it leads to greater rates of oxidative phosphorylation and an improved capacity to utilize fatty acids during sub-maximal exercise. Given the importance of mitochondrial biogenesis for skeletal muscle performance, considerable attention has been given to understanding the molecular cues stimulated by endurance exercise and the role that alterations in nutritional status may play in augmenting this adaptive response. In this session, I will discuss a variety of exercise and nutritional approaches used to augment mitochondrial adaption to exercise, examine proposed modes of action and finally discuss the
feasibility of such approaches to alter mitochondrial adaptation to endurance training in humans.

Dark chocolate, Nicotinamide Riboside and fish oil were investigated. Choc and oil had good results. NR had results in rats. More research needed in humans. I'm off to eat some dark chocolate! (As if I needed another excuse)

what property in dark chocolate gave benefits? Was it the omega 3 in fish oil that was beneficial?

That’s good science at last ,heard about the chocolate before some time ago , but didn’t have the how , now we know the why , off to the chocolate shop the now ! Thanks for posting . One question that needs asking , possibly in another forum , is As an athlete grows fitter , he naturally will be able to make greater inroads in his ability to recover , given his/her increase in strength and performance. Would a reduction in frequency of the stimulus ,ie 3-4 days rather than every other day allow for a continued improvement ? I’ll repost this on other possibly more appropriate lectures .

Diet without hunger is impossible. Reducing calories makes you hungry too. Just how do we hack it. For example, drinking bitter coffee, drinking lots of water or eating gum. If you want to eat healthy Brokkoli, if you have a large portion, the calories are the same as eating rice.♣♣♣♣ This too much to explain. Dieting reduces calorie intake, reduces sugar and burns calories by exercising, so you can't avoid hunger. The hunger process refers to the fat burning process. Here's a tip for people who can't speak: go straight to the point. If this guy is a teacher I feel for his students. Go straight to the point and you'll be a more tolerable speaker.

Presentation style isn’t helpful for a scientist or layperson. Maybe a touch of actual interest in the topic would help? Was this guy forced into his career?

I get your point. In his defense, however, he is a scientist. He's not trying to sell something. He's getting down to nitty-gritty. you know, real science. Information supported by evidence, not hype or marketing. Science tends not to be very sexy, and increasingly so in modern popular culture.
@scotth3354

@@martinirving3824 he most certainly is trying to ‘sell’ something. The point is, if you want people to engage with your presentation and buy your arguments, you gotta be more of a salesman.
@martinirving3824
@martinirving3824 3 года назад
@@scotth3354 , I mean, if I remember correctly (from actually listening to this talk, did you?) the take home message seemed to be that there really wasn't much data on this question and he started to realize that when he looked into it. He basically wasn't all that comfortable giving the talk. I guess he drew the short straw? Interesting that dark chocolate is one of the few things that does contain properties that seem to enhance mitochondrial function. My personal perspective on this is we're much better off seeking to enhance mitochondrial function through diet (lower carb), fasting, exercise, sleep, etc, rather than seeking chemical properties through nutritional supplements. I think that's basically what the conclusion is to be drawn here.

Spot on, a presenter is either selling or educating on data or both. A tip for speakers like this is to take a recording of the presentation but don’t listen to it. Run it through a voice graph to see how much variation in amplification is occurring. Once you see it your voice pattern will change.

It's always disappointing when someone studying health looks unhealthy. He even sounds like he is lacking in energy. Low levels of health in recent generations has become the norm of our society. The diseases of civilization, particularly metabolic conditions, are increasing. Think about diseases that used to be considered age-related but are increasingly seen among children and young adults.

I don't mean to unfairly judge. And I'm certainly not being dismissive. Maybe he has a serious health condition that is beyond mere diet and exercise. Still, that couldn't explain the high number of unhealthy people in general one observes working in health fields.
