1:11:33 Notes on the audio
Recently I was approached by Cherub Technology and asked to review the NUX NGS-6 amplifier simulator pedal. I accepted because their comments included 'good or bad - put it in the review'. So the pedal arrived - and that is interesting because the UA Dream 65 and the Ruby 63 amp sim pedals were fresh in my mind and I was excited to take a look. I was also surprised when researching other brands that the Strymon Iridium only really had THREE amp simulations (it seems) and both the UA and Strymon offerings cost approximately double the price of this NGS-6 amp simulator pedal. So is the NUX NGS-6 Verdugo pedal from the Amp Academy series for guitar a winner? and is it simply better value than the UA and/or Strymon products?
I looked inside this unit and the quality was frankly pretty much as good as it gets and I was reminded about the UA pedals that I recently reviewed which was also incredibly good. Quality is a critical component when you want longevity and a robust design and this pedal has buckets of that!
Don't look for other reviews like this one as I show this pedal - there are none and likely never will be... and make no mistake if I found something that is in any way detrimental then its in this review for potential customers to see - I used a 'no holds barred' approach and I always teel it as I find it.
My concerns of course, after looking closely at the pedal physically, related to the amp simulations and tones themselves and just how easy or complex this NUX NGS-6 amp sim really would be to use in real life situations like at a gig for example. I used the pedal in the studio myself and directly in to the desk and we had no problems at all in doing so.
In the audio examples section of the review we played a sample of the 6 main amps (set by default - but you can change them for others) and while I did use the software editor to change a few positions those sounds were right out of the unit and only changes were things like the drive, master, the bass, mid and treble and that sort of thing so it was really being used like a 'real' tube amp. So check that section out and the accompanying notes about the gear and more...
So while this was a gifted pedal I show it all in all its glory and good and bad is included without ANY input from the maker. That is so important to my reviews that had there been 'strings attached' then this review would not exist.
I have spent considerable time (near enough a week!) creating this video and this video is not sponsored other than the donated pedal. My views remain entirely my views and I was not given ANY context to write the review. It's my own work and is a completely truthful independent review - so check it out and don't just watch the sales videos from others!
PLEASE SUBSCRIBE, RING THE BELL, AND THUMBS UP to give my channel a boost and thank you for watching - I hope the video is enjoyable.

:) I have always tried to show the things that most 'reviewers' don't. While this is a self financed video or sponsored I always tell the truth about any product I buy or review. You will always find stuff in my reviews that are never shown in others because that's intentional. Many will NEVER show you this sort of review so I'm glad that you have gained a little from this review - and do bear in mind that over Christmas I'll be reviewing the Eventide H90 in the same way!. Thanks for the review Tony! I'd never heard of this, but watched your reviews for the UAFX pedals. I had the Dream 65 saved for future purchase, but for me, this seems like a much more versatile tool. I'm a gigging musician looking to downsize as much as I can, and thought this might be good running through a pedalboard power amp into a guitar cabinet on stage. Saves me having to bring out the Kemper (which I can keep for recording) or an amp head. At the price it's definitely worth a purchase.
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 2 года назад
Exactly. I liked the versatility (I would have loved stereo - but someone said it was with using the loop?) of this pedal and the switches just work easily to change things as I would need them so easily - non complexity will win every time when it comes to using the stuff... Kempers are very good but cost the money even more these days (I have one too) and I can understand the need for a light easy to use sim pedal with 6 usable amps - it seems a no brainer really and I'll certainly look again at NUX in the future. Thanks for watching too.

@@tonymckenziecom Yep a great pedal. Bought one and tried it for a few days and realised - I already have a Headrush MX5 for recording and live, I just like my old fashioned messy sounds from pedal board and amp - so I returned it in perfect condition to Amazon so hopefully someone got one even cheaper on a warehouse deal 😎 Lovely to watch your technical breakdown to show the quality of the pedal though, but my GAS has to stop to pay for electricity and gas/petrol these days lol. Two pedals that do pretty much the same thing seems a bit much. I did, however, then hunt down the Electro-Harmonix String9 instead which is great fun and saves me playing keyboards (badly) when recording 😂

Thanks for such and in depth review, I´m looking for the simplicity of having an overdrive, delay and phaser to go with something like this, IMO the editing software, DI and IR part of it just does it for me. Hell you could buy it just as an IR loader and it would be a decent value.

Fantastic review Tony….you always do quite well. I wish you would have fully opened the tech 21 fly rig, but that is a nerdy complaint from an electronics engineer. The guitarist in me says your reviews check all the boxes, but the engineer is a bit more strict 😂….I will likely buy one of these pedals as it is pretty amazing for $200 USD
@viranomainen1
@viranomainen1 Год назад
Thank you for the interesting in depth review! Did you notice from the editor software that since you updated the firmware the number of amps is doubled to twelve? You can choose an amp for each slot - let's say vintage on the A side - with the editor software. For example you can choose Fender Super Reverb instead of Fender Twin or Marshall Bluesbreaker instead of Mesa Mark 1. Furthermore, many people see it as a shortage that there is only mono output, but if you use Amp Academy as a pedalboard amp like me you can always put your stereo effects pedals after Amp Academy. I run my Amp Academy to stereo frfr-speaker cab and I have my stereo delays and reverbs between Amp Academy and the cab. Also those modulations that needs to be run as stereo like tremolo/pan or stereo chorus should be there between the AA and the cab. All the drives and boosts are obviously in front of the AA. The send/return loop is mono so you can put only those effects in the loop that are mono ie. ring modulator, EQ etc.

Very good Tony. I'm in a quandary now. I was going to get the Dream but will look into this. These look great for recording. I currently either use an amp miced up or software that doesn't really convince. My concern here is live because the gigs I play are fairly low key affairs and so I'd be at the mercy of the techie and monitoring system. I guess you can also use the amp sims of this in an amp's FX loop, but then you'd still have to lug the amp around:)

Just bought a NUX in fact. A shop here was selling them for €159 euros. I contacted them asking them whether they'd put 159 instead of 195 (not wanting complications later), which is the general price and they replied saying. Yes, it's wrong but if you want to take advantage of the mistake, feel free to do so... So I did.

Many thanks Tony! Especially for the chance to see the inside of the pedal which is often neglected in other similar reviews. Probably not many of us viewers "know what you mean" when it comes to e.g. the quality of I.O. boards but I really appreciate your willingness/effort to give us more both general and specific parameters for judging not only the product in question but also the manufacturer. In this case, I have received one more positive argument for what you really get for the money. Why don't you have a direct link to a supplier's product page or similar marketing material in connection with your review? NUX or any supplier should indirectly (to say the least) "thank you" for your objective/competent effort.
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom Год назад
Indeed I DO have a link! Visit NUX EFX and see more about the NGS-6 - its worth watching: www.nuxefx.com/ampacademy.html and I think NUX do appreciate the video - they have seen it. Always check the text below the video as I most often put much info in the text and even sometimes stuff not in the video itself. I have always thought that the quality inside does matter - it would be frustrating to buy any product from any company and maybe at 3 months (or just out of warranty!) it stops because it was not made well. Some never care about that (they clearly don't get it) but I always think that is critical... and with some gear costing literally $500+ these days that's IMO important. Thanks for watching Dusan, and I'm glad you gained a bit from the video... the pedal ir really very good and its recommended.

@DusanStanic Год назад

While 'SHARC' is often 'picked up' by many guys, remember there are a whole series of SHARC processors from Analog Devices. Some are slower and less powerful than others and it's one reason why I often show the processor - some makers don't like it to be shown, while others 'claim' its $500 each to justify them for the sometimes over the top pricing of the equipment. In my own sector I know EXACTLY what the chip shortages in the supply chain can do to products for sale... it's not a NUX issue but further back down the chain as one of my recent videos discussed... and thanks for watching - but its a good point for sure and one that is affecting every single maker out there no matter whether they admit it or not - even Apple is having trouble... the chip thing often is not always that there are no chips... but rather that the supply chain takes a price from say $1 to $10 per chip (or indeed far worse and the product can't be made for the money).

@@tonymckenziecom I now work for a small company that is trying to sell magflow water meters, but they use a lot of chips that are in short supply and prices going up nearly every day. The meters are made in southern Ireland, so the shipping and import charges don't help. We used to get deliveries every week, now it's a few a month. This worlwide shortage will be with us for a few years more, hopefully i will be retired by then!

Allan I am not really allowed to talk about the company stuff I do, but generally the situation is extremely bad still. You touched on shipping - and one of the most recent 'bills' I have seen was for power supplies from China by SEA... (by air would be silly). Sadly I can tell you that the shipping and clearance cost has now doubled to what it was a while back. That has to be passed on (when the gear even arrives as its short supply too) to customers. Power supplies were typically $7 and a $ or 2 for shipping, but now? Well $10 and $4 seems about right. Of course by the time you add margin and VAT AND have to warrant the devices then it gets very expensive with retails then very high. Everything you mention I have seen exactly the same out there from many companies. Sincerely I hope it improves...

@@tonymckenziecom Customers don't seem to understand that apart from shortages of components, which are increasing every day the shipping costs have more than doubled in recent months. The Magflow meters that come from southern Ireland weigh 15kg when packed, then due to brexit you have to add import duty, courier handling fee then VAT. Small companies can only pay the going rates, they can't afford to buy in bulk when the prices are low, which i doubt that they ever will be again in the current climate. Consumers are in for a shock if all of this continues, the days of buying good TV's or Guitars for under £500 will soon be over.

Hi Mr.Mckenzie.... in term of dynamic? Is Tube like response? Thank you very much......

It's not bad. I don't really find many simulators exactly like a tube amp particularly in the 'feel' when you play. Sure enough, the tones are there in most and this one is no exception - it sounds pretty cool to me. But the exact 'feel' of an amp is hard to describe and my guess is it's hard to simulate too. Thanks for watching.

Would you say the sounds are in par with the boss gx-100. I have g.a.s. like every musician so this seems like a fun way to spend $200.00, but I already have the gx100 so if the amps aren't better I couldn't justify it 😅

It's really hard to say something is 'better or worse' - its subjective, but also important to take in to account the music styles you play because they are generally dependent on what you like in tones... all I can say is that they are good in this unit and I still have it here. Had it been a not so good pedal I would have sold it, but this one is staying :). Thanks. I know I side stepped the answer - but think about what I said and in reality I was very honest.

@@tonymckenziecom 💯😁👍🏽 nicely done I guess when I say better I'm referring to how close they sound and feel to the amps they're trying to emulate. I appreciate you taking the time to answer my question, and for your stellar in-depth reviews.

11 Months later, are you using it? How does it compare against the Tonex as far as sounding like the real Amps?
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom Год назад
Yes I still have the NUX NGS-6 pedal and still use it. I thought the NUX unit is simply easier to use and sounded very good. On the Tonex the faffing about with software that is sort of worked or not was not helpful so I sold the Tonex and indeed as I said I still have the NUX. I liked the NUX tones. The Tonex can sound OK too, but overall I thought if you consider everything then the NUX won out because its just easier and works all the time. Hope it helps and thanks for watchiong.

@@tonymckenziecom really appreciate your answer, as a gigging musician I cant be fussed with messing about with such things either, (even although technology is my day job), also looking at the Nux MG-400 which seems to offer much in the way of Amp simulation, but added effects, how would you compare on the Amp simulation, that is primarily what I am looking for, effects are a bonus, my rig is pretty simple, I either use a Katana 100 or a Marshall Combo, so box of tricks would just go into power amp.

This pedal takes a lot of work to make it sound good. Also it works better with outside IRs, the onboard ones are meh. The DI out is really hot so you have to make adjustments to it. At the end of the day, the feel of it was a little dead-ish, I'll be honest. So, I returned it and got a UA Ruby and OMG that sounds amazing in comparison. I really wanted to like this Amp Academy because of the features. It wasn't good enough for me to want to use it live as a DI solution.

Good points. I also reviewed the UA Ruby - so check that out too here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M6yLmiXc_mM.html The Ruby and 65 Reverb offer great tones - but remember that they really offer just one amp compared to the NUX NGS-6 so its a bit of what fits someone really I think. Thanks for the post and for watching.
