Going to be diving in this trans this weekend for my 2000 gmc sierra. I will definitely refer to this vid. Very detailed. But seeing how I'm not a professional I plan on marking everything. Great video! This seems to be the similar versiin of my trans with the single shift rail design.

Hi thanks for the upload, I’m about to do this with mine, I’m over in the UK and finding it hard to find any information on this so your video will be invaluable when I do it, mines an older external slave but I’m guessing it will be pretty much the same as the featured one, from what I can see from people that have done it that reverse idler is a nightmare, I like how your video uses almost none of the ‘specialist’ tools which is great for me over here as can’t get them anywhere 👍 thanks again I’ve subscribed as see you have done a th350, once I have my C10 back going my 51 Chevy will need the th350 going over 😃
@CurmudgeonTransmission
@CurmudgeonTransmission 3 года назад
Yes it should be and yeah trying to hold all that together and drop that housing down at the same time will have you cursing. Sometimes you get luck and it drops right into place. I don't have many tools for standards but can do most. Only ones I can't do are the really large ones, especially the 6 speeds in trucks. Press just is not big enough for them. We do just about any transmission and have had some interesting stuff over the years, too bad I didn't have a camera for some of it. Hope both videos get you what you need. As soon as the parts show up I am doing another TH350 video, as I have moved the camera and it is closer now. Thanks for subscribing and watching.

Is it common for these transmissions to have excess gear back lash. I have the 1999 version of this trans and I can feel an audible clunkwhen letting off the gas as well as applying it. I've replaced U joint as well as checked backlash in rear end. Could It be the trans? Is there an easy way to check it without dropping the trans?

I would think you could put it in 4th gear and pull the driveshaft and check it there. Could not find any listings on what it should be but I would think it should be like anything else. .005-.012

I rebuilt a 97 silverado NV3500 and only replaced the input shaft & countershaft. Now pushing the clutch in i cannot get into 4th gear without grinding and forcing it in. Input shaft teeth & dimensions were matched to old unit. Stock unit failed due to shearing input & countershaft teeth When i put the new input shaft in i reused the thin 4/5 circle ring (shim? cone?) that goes underneath the old synchro ring. I think this is causing my synchro to not function at all. Do you know what this piece is called? Cannot find it on any forums or store sites. Thanks for the mad helpful video
@CurmudgeonTransmission
@CurmudgeonTransmission 2 месяца назад
I know what you are talking about. However, I don't know the name for it. Have looked through all the info I could find and none of it shows it, sorry. When you have the synchro and gear in your hand, you should be able to push the synchro onto the gear while turning it and it should get difficult to impossible to turn. if it doesn't the synchro is wrong or the cone of the gear is worn out. Or in your case since it was replaced, the wrong size.
@guitarguy3221

@@CurmudgeonTransmission Thanks for the reply. After some research i learned that a synchro isnt good just because the teeth arent gone on it like how the gears were haha I'm hoping a fresh synchro will fix 4th gr for the new input shaft. Shaft has play when installed. 1 & 2nd gr seem to have a 2nd ring underneath the synchro rings. Little information is available on part sites - they list them as 3 piece synchros. I bought a some 290-14 synchros for 3rd, 4th and hopefully reverse. I shaved the shift rail a bit and got it to fit into gear better. These transmissions have upgrades with a little machining and tinkering

Thank you very much. How did you diagnose that the input shaft needed to be replaced? Mine feels a little bit sloppy, but I haven't got it apart yet to look for wear. The input shaft bearing on the front of the NV3500 was demolished! Ball bearing spacers completely absent and honestly, it looked like the wrong bearing as it had no seals on it. I thought it felt a bit loose when I bought the truck, but the pilot needle bearing was demolished (and the clutch) and I figured the trans had some wear from that but I hoped it was going to be okay. Nope. It wasn't.

What about the little pin that goes on the bell housing on the left side

If you are talking about the detent and spring I guess it got edited out. Plunger goes in first then the spring then the plug.

Thank you. There are 5 different kits depending on your application. You will just need to call them and give your information.

What are you having trouble with?

@Curmudgeon Transmission I used your video and I pressed what you did and applied the snap rings and things and my gears will not turn It just stalls the vehicle also I out the detent ball and spring in but with the clutch in and truck running the shifter falls out of gear I'm wondering is there also another detent set behind the detent plug or not stuff kind of fell out as I took it apart

Sounds like it is stuck in 2 gears at once. You have definitely done something wrong in the detent section of the transmission. You will need to take it back apart and look at it.

So I took it back apart and the only 2 things I noticed are 3rd gear doesn't spin on the shaft and when I press the synchro for 5th and reverse to add the snap ring those 2 gears don't spin either

What generation nv3500 is this? Thanks
@CurmudgeonTransmission
@CurmudgeonTransmission 3 года назад
I know I replied to this question but my reply is not showing up so I will do it again. If it shows up twice I am sorry. There are two versions of this, one has 1 piece synchro's and the other 3 piece on 1st and 2nd gears. They do not specify a split in years so it appears they are available in all. This one is the single synchro.

@@CurmudgeonTransmission Thanks. I was asking cause I was expecting the transmission in my 1990 Silverado to be a getrag 290 but it looks like the nv3500 you are working on in the video. I have a second 5 speed and it is a getrag 290 but it had a mystery piece in the bell housing when I separated the case. Kind of looks like it would go near the reverse idler but I don’t see where it would go. It appears to be missing a set screw as well. I have to order the kit for the nv3500. Thanks again for the response

@William Sobers No problem. There 3 other versions that look similar but are different. The NV3500 has the single shift rail the others have 4. There is a MG290, HM290 and 5LM60. The NV3500 came out in 93. Your's should be a 5LM60, early version.

@@CurmudgeonTransmission I understand all that. The transmission has shift rails like the nv3500 in your video. My other transmission looks exactly like the getrag 290 in your other video. I figure the transmission has been replaced at some point. The truck is 31 years old and I am not the original owner. The clutch is an older high performance type but is need of replacing.

Must have been swapped out. If you have Instagram go to my page and post a picture of what you are talking about and I will see if I can tell you where it goes. curmudgeontransmission
