you have to build the rules up before you get to something close to reality.

it depends on the simulation settings and engine. for example I've only used blender mantaflow, blender flipped fluids addon, and houdini flip solver. all of them have their own settings for all of those, houdini's flip being the best looking/fastest I've tried so far, which could be because faster = more time to play with settings

Well to be honest, if the ground is not sealed it can soak up some water, so disappearing water actually looks more realistic in some circumstances.

it depends on what you want in your scene but overall it's not a good thing. If you really wanted that, you do have features like particle lifetime to have the particles disappear when you actually want it to

after a quick glance i think this paper went pretty in depth on the processes and algorithms used to make it work, and they even managed to render it at 40fps on a 2080 mobile GPU, which is crazy imo. definitely worth a full read!

Would be great if they open sourced it if they are willing to share the papers on how they did it, A working example means others can implement it into their own projects, even if they don't entirely understand the technical 'how' it works part

2.5D fluid simulations with height maps already work in realtime. There are plug-ins for both unreal and unity making that possible. And there's a Blender 2.5D fluid Sim that's entirely made with geometry nodes. I can imagine one or the other game dev is already experimenting with this. Although full 3D simulations are a whole different beast. Exiting times =)

I love how the algo were not just layered but merged... thanks. It may seem simple to some, but there is a lot of optimization that would come from abstractions over more and more detail in the end.

pretty sure this has to be baked, there is no way in hell a fluid simulation like this is running in real time, especially with so many other things happening in game. although having baked animations use these methods would be really sick.

ray tracing, grass rendering? we came a long way. But yeah, many nintendo games have cases where dev resorts to animation hacks like refusing to open a gate until the building fully renders while your character stucks outside.

It still feels a little bit wrong because they never account for "wetness". Everything is perfectly hydrophobic and never stays wet. I think fluid-surface interactions would be an incredible next step in fluid simulation.

When they say real time how many milliseconds does it take to compute? That is pretty essential when it comes to video games. I’d love to see this added to future games but I’d love to see how far out it is from being used in real time in combination with other effects.

With this technology I would start filling all of my NPCs with real liquid so that when they squish or puncture, the resulting splashes would be numerically perfect simulations of theoretical fluid dynamics.

The first method seems to be something like heightfield style simulation thus not capable of simulating an overlapping pert of the wave "Lip". I think the next huge milestone would be to make such scenarios possible. Maybe it is possible to achieve by looking at power distribution field of waves. Then a set of levels could be prepared and the sim would hop between layers based on some predefined threshold, maybe this could even be done locally to avoid creating full resolution maps for the wave levels.

Honestly, the one that conserves volume looks more like mercury than water... The one that looses volume looks like it's just evaporating, which is pretty realistic imho.

now they just need that slight stickyness of molecular surface tension to get the velocities super realistic. Its the only thing I noticed missing. Surface tension will be a serious endeavor im guessing.

This can also work for anything in real world physics as you can create a surface tension index with the modified Navier Stokes equations, each part inside of a car having it's own breaking point leading to real world physics in games.

The droplet simulation still seems off. In slow-mo footage, you see smaller droplets completely bounce back and start a repeat cycle with a smaller droplet. (Though I think that one is also temperature dependent? Something something requires low temperature?... I guess I might be wrong.)

Neat! Also, some water *should* disappear (while on sand), but not in the bottle. Water thrown on the character should be absorbed in cloths and splatter not even showing up (just like real life, it didnt *actually* disappear but is beyond normal detection levels).

This somehow reminds me of Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, and I wonder how much further technology will develop to the point where this can also be simulated, where particles behave like waves and the wave patterns are represented with physical accuracy. Each era brings its innovations, and it’s incredibly impressive. I’m excited to see what’s next.

If waves could act like slow moving raycast for shooting games, it could drastically improve fps. Or make waves having good texture but basic geometry for games that don't even ubisoft into the water.

"injection molding" simulation, and "fuel efficiency" simulations. I feel A.I. is thee key to revisiting old methods, and "alternative designs". We-humanity are inquisitive beings, always looking for new inventions and to solve problems. Many good, and competitive ideas and designs can and with the help of AI will re-imagen yesterdays forgotten mechanisms, and unsolved math problems. Simulations such as this one will help to better mankind, and I believe save lives.
