Its funny, the first thing I thought of when you said "find out if it's inside the mesh" was using an octree I haven't done the math, but I imagine the binary tree approach has a lower computational complexity?

I've just had a terrible idea: dynamic mesh subdivision based on the difference between its vertexes current and intended/starting angle, to help smooth out stuff like cloths over edges. Sounds incredibly painful to create.
