I found it more nuanced than this with the XMG Neo 15. I had the 125W RTX 3070 during synthetic GPU test at 2560x1600, however I was sitting at around 132W. Sometimes it boosted to 136W, while the max peak was reported as 140W, but 140W wasn't common by any means. I used to specify the highest power limit in my benchmark graphs, so now I'm thinking I will have to just list the power range as "125-140W".

It’ll be an interesting year! HP was really aggressive with their Dynamic Boost on the 2070s MQ. I had to run the cpu sub 20w to get the GPU to max out.

Do you think the AMD CPU has anything to do with it? I can't find any information on the ryzen 5000h series online yet, but if the 4000h CPUs are anything to go off of, they are less power hungry than the Intel CPUs. Maybe this causes the GPU to be able to boost slightly more than with the less efficient Intel CPUs. If so this would make the Ryzen laptops an even more appealing option, as if that were possible. Edit: also collab between B.O.A.T., Jarrod's Tech, and OWNorDisown when?

@@sabata7658 My next video is a 4800H vs 5800H, granted a bit less apples to apples because both models can basically just smash the power limit and it's not capped to something arbitrary like 45W, but I found it weird that my 5800H laptop was taking more power. Could be differences in screen etc, but it was a bit more than I'd expect from that. Could also be silicon lottery, not sure what exactly but the results will be in the video. As for collab, I think we might be doing a stream on the 30th? Not sure on the details yet, Steve mentioned it the other week

Thanks for mentioning this. Along with the new laptop GPUs not keeping up with the power requirements of their desktop brethren, the lack of Max-Q branding, we now have Dynamic boost to contend with - makes comparing GPUs all the more difficult - you reviewers have a busy time on your hands. Also for most AAA games (Warzone, Cyberpunk, Hitman 3), I almost never see the CPU using less than 35W, mostly it's around 45-55W. So these inflated GPU scores on Time Spy are really misleading. Games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider with their fixed benchmark runs (but without RTX) are a better test now for relative performance vs 20/10-series than Firestrike/Time Spy.
@OWNORDISOWN
@OWNORDISOWN 3 года назад
I believe in an earlier video you said 1080p will bottleneck these systems. It does indeed, and I 100% agree with you - many games just don't see the benefit of Dynamic boost because of the CPU clocks down too low. Ray Tracing solves this issue in the most part, giving the GPU more work to do. Still, as you say, the laptop is very cool. MY GE66 never broke a sweat!
@BobOfAllTrades
@BobOfAllTrades 3 года назад
The more you can load the GPU the less of an issue it’ll be that’s why Nvidia released their benchmarks in 4K. It’s actually not Nvidia‘s fault, it’s because CPUs have not kept up with GPU technology.

It's just impressive how these modern laptops reached this level of performacne given the consumption to be that efficient. Tho, the limiting factor will still being the power bricks that can't provide as many power due to it's size.
@ivanbrasla
@ivanbrasla 3 года назад
Not really, there can be two power bricks if needed, the true bottleneck is simple physics. A thin and light laptop can't deal with much more heat than today's current models, and people don't seem to care for thicker chassis so that's your limiting factor

Despite dynamic boost being potentially misleading, I dig the thermals + reasonable real world performance increase. I'm just a bit worried about makers trying to pair it with a 4k display... even on a 17" I think 4k is unnecessary for most of us with average visual acuity and will probably be a hefty performance penalty.

Very interesting.. It makes me wonder if we will see a bigger difference over with AMD based laptops if they can draw less power from the CPU and more reliably benefit from dynamic boost Also makes me wonder if they couldn't create power profiles triggered by specific games that can maximize performance or something.. One things for sure, reviewers are going to have their work cut out for them with how all of this stuff is going to play together.. And real world gaming reviews are always better than pure synthetic any day (though synthetics do have their uses)

Good video as always, Bob. I have to wonder based on other RU-vidrs like Jarrod of Jarrod's Tech and Stephen of OWNorDisown's tests if these laptops will behave differently based on manufacturer as well. When you get the opportunity to test a Ryzen cpu + mobile 30 series I wonder if it will show different results considering they're slightly less power hungry than the Intel CPUs. Also I really can't wait to see what we get from manufacturers like Eluktronics in terms of eluktroboost and stuff like that. I don't fully expect my pre-ordered Prometheus XVII to run the 3080 at 150W all the time, but hopefully Eluktronics has a trick up their sleeve that will set it apart from the others somehow. Keep up the great content man! Hope to see you, Jarrod, and Stephen become the new big tech RU-vidrs before too long!

Bob, i want to ask to you something i noticed. I think those 3070 arebottlenecked from integrated gpu bus (like happened before). I see many tests in those hours and noticed that many many times they are just inconsistent for 3070 maxP, that sometimes goes on par with old 2070 super maxP (10-15 fps only in the average games, totally strange cause that gpu should push 30-35 fps more at least)or in the best case as an 2080 laptop. That cannot depend at all from tdp, cause i noticed that frequencies are very very high when use is at 100% (much higher than 2xxx actually). There's a quick test all of you can do... is just to retry the benchs and games on hdmi output, cause on hdmi nvidia should drive the display bypassing the integrated gpu bus (or even bettr use the mux if they have it). Something is really broken this time. If via hdmi results are the same, the only thing is that something is really screwed or drivers are totally immature.

@@BobOfAllTrades yeah i already see that... but still i continue to think that's something is really wrong on 3xxx series. Nvidia had to rethink the next gen 4xxx graphics to match lower tdp even on desktops at least to go on par with the best efficiency generation that still was pascal 1xxx. on that gen desk vs lap was under 10% difference, just a couple of fps less. turing amplify that gap but still remains solid on maxP, but now with 3xxx they destroyed everything pushing us back to 800-900 series epoca when laptop gpu's was not even the same in terms of cores (i had a 950m that was a 750 ti, and not the real 950 desktop). I think they’re external GPU enclosure might be more based off of a desktop design and if that’s the case, I don’t think dynamic Boost is a feature. But I don’t follow the desktop market as close so I could be out of my element here.

I really want to like the 51M Laptops but I’ve got trust issues with Dell on all of their laptops and that’s just not through my own experience either. I want the best from those AW machines. Maybe they corrected everything wrong with the R1. How much is that spec you’re interested in?
@tomgjonaj9965

@@BobOfAllTrades it has the 2070 super max p, which has hit over 10k graphics in timespy in these units, 10700K, 300hz 1080p panel, 16GB DDR4 3200, 1TB nvme for 2500 right now. R2 did fix the burnout issues from the R1 and added a new Vapor chamber cooling system

3:35 did you compare these by accident? Your showing two completely different benchmark graphic scores to make your point that a desktop variant is much more powerful than its mobile counterpart. Which is true of course, however showing these two totally *different* benchmarks just doesnt make sense. Of course a "Firestrike" graphic score is gonna beat a "Time Spy" one bc thats how the results *Always* end up anyways when comparing both test, Firestrike Graphic always yields a higher score than Time Spy graphic(no matter what card you use). I mean your comparing a Firestrike Graphic score to a Time Spy graphic score, which makes no sense, your comparing two completely different benchmarks lol. Its like comparing apples to oranges at that example. It would have been smarter to show the benchmarking scores from just one benchmark test like FireStrike for both gpu's, instead of comparing two completely different benchmarks to prove a point. Do a benchmark and show the "Firestrike Graphic score" for a mobile 3070 to compare to that 31,691 Desktop 3070 score. I can guarantee the result/number would be alot higher than the 11,834 Time Spy Graphic score your idk why comparing to a Desktop 3070 Firestrike Graphic score(which already yields much higher scores by default).

To me it looks like a bad generations of gpu's... it's clear that desktop have too high tdp and laptop this time can only suffers on higher models, capping tdp in maxq is even worse. But giving basically 10 fps more than a 2070s of max 17 in the same thickness is bad for a generational leap. At this point have much more sense just to buy 3060 that have pretty much same performance and take back those 500-600 dollars/euros. This thing anyway let me happy having a 2070s 115w, basically it have same performance of that thing in full boost (23000 points to FS with 100mhz of oc). In the end i will be able to play ultra 1080-1440p for at least this 3xxx generation of laptops... What a shame, this time they even limited numbers of cores, they never did it since pascal on laptops... it's clear that desktop gpu need to lower they tdp again, time to a new architecture.
