Here we are, 15 years later. How strange time has been.

Myrkul was so perfect in this game. He's exactly like I imagined him. The voice actor who portrayed him did a masterful job and the dialogue written for Myrkul was flawless.

Strongly agree, to this day. It's so introspective, deep, and roleplay rich. This track and the moment you get to the astral plane... each time I would stop and just look at the astral plane, listening to the music...

unfortunately attached to nwn2 OC. people most likely spend a couple of hours playing oc first then give up on it (rightfully so, its bad) and dlcs. one of the most disappointing rpgs ever made was followed up with one of the most surprisingly excellent yet overlooked rpgs ever. when you think about it motb itself is kinda cursed. ironic.

They captured the feeling of the Astral Plane so perfectly with this song. Also, the actor who played Myrkul was so perfect in his role.

I didn't like NWN2, ,but MoTB, good God... that was an emotional, amazing game. What a story. Amazing how by the end of the game, you weren't even sure which character you were playing, yourself, or the masked man. I also will never forget the hag's lair, the hag singing, (I was stuck there for over a day), and the final hags coven, with them creepily sleeping suspended in air. What a game, what a game.

+Ne0mega Mask of the Betrayer was true experience. It's just a bit sad that it wasn't made for the VR age, and with better VR... The game had wings it could never use because of the design constraints, the limits of technology, and the chained up imaginations of the developers, who, in spite of their gross imperfections made something extraordinary in this game. The game was way too short and way too limited. A shame, a true shame.

The original campaign wasn't bad. It was a lot of fun. It was the classic hero's journey done right. Mask of the betrayer was more of a personal journey about salvation. Two different kinds of stories but both done very well!

The thing that I liked about Mask of the Betrayer was the random bits of lore that I knew from the load screens in the previous games. I knew what the Wall of the Faithless was before I played the expansion. NWN does a good job of foreshadowing / getting you involved in the rich history of the Forgotten Realms

If you pay close attention, Zeiree actually mentions Akachi(she refers to him as 'The Betrayer' when speaking to her Lieutenant who is leading the search for the Shards on the Prime. She says "Forget the Betrayer" since they're looking for him too since he also wielded the Sword of Gith in his time.

The Soundtrack of MotB is one of the best I heard in the last few years. It's rare that even the soundtrack makes you to want to go on with the game! I also love the "Dreamscape Anya" and "Fugue Combat" piece. "Vault of the Death God" is my absolute favorite.

@minscboo1030

The music's so moving after all these years, I've spent so much time playing D&D CRPGs and MotB is the best of them. The epic story, the atmosphere, the incredible dubbing (Polish), great music and friends at my side I could always trust (I never took One of Many.) It was so spiritual to fight with evil inside that devours me, and to learn the story behind that: the rebellion made of love, compassion and anger, the curse cast by an evil god to punish it, eternal suffering and eternal love. Me, the Protagonist, followed the plot, grew, found my own greatness, found what honour, friendship and love is. Chris Avallone and George Ziets did really great, great job. Ther was only one problem: it was all fantasy on a computer screen and when the game was over I was back in reality in the very same place I'd been before. No real challenges, no achievements, no friends. No life. Only loneliness was real, so I played again and again. Do you remember Vanilla Sky, the movie? That's the trap games set up for us and I was trapped. I am no more now, I've chosen life as it is over games. I only feel regret for those wasted years, but as you know, 'regret can change the nature of a man'... Provided it's real. Best wishes for everyone! Thank you for listening to me and I hope to meet you in the real world :)

This story was epic. The music made it unforgettable and truly an emotional experience. Myrkul did as he must. We only see him as evil because we see death as evil. Myrkul was fair.
@andrewvincent7299
@andrewvincent7299 5 лет назад
@@Ne0mega I don't know if Myrkul was exactly fair...Myrkul did do some really evil things. He essentially led Akachi down his path by actually setting up the Founder to die in some twisted test of faith. Akachi's punishment was too harsh and it didn't just effect him but the spirits and the people of Rashemen for hundreds of years. It was far from fair. If part of his motivation for that punishment of Akachi was to keep himself in existence as well after death, which it was, then he is a twisted god who is evil

I understand you, stranger, among so many things said, I understand.. Reality has long lost its colors to me and yet I cannot discard the fantasies like you did, for they are part of me now, and as an artist, I am part of them in return... Do you remember though? The countless worlds just behind the doubtfully-thick window of reality? Do you still crave what even dreams cannot provide, I wonder? For I do, cannot not to. Anyhow, it was a refreshing thing indeed - to meet someone, whom I can understand, even though the meeting is torn in time, for but a briefest of moments in some wretched comment section of the Web.

My favorite part of the game. :) When Myrkul talked, u could actually feel it, everything he said had such a deep meaning... He threw them all into despair when he showed them how pointless their ideals are (from his view). ,,But u still do not believe in gods nor fate, even as u look upon my corpse. But i supouse to believe in one such as me, to u that is a death of a different sort, and no less painfull than dieing within my Wall of the Faithless.''

:: Dark One, you must allow me to devour the broken god! It would make the Many supremely powerful! :: "Ah.. I thought I recalled the scent of judgments passed. Does this creature think that it can finally achieve revenge by supping on my spirit? Devour my spirit and my consciousness will only fade for a time. This creatures very existence glorifies my name... by every action, you will both grant me life anew." "Myrkul is mine to devour. Not yours, One of Many." :: I have allowed you too much freedom to rule me, and you now take the Many for granted. You will regret your decision :: "Enjoy your feast, then... and enjoy the hatred of your pet as well. You've deprived your monster of the thing it wanted the most, and it will not forget."

Chris Avellone took the helm for Mask of the betrayer. He was lead designer and lead writer I believe. That is the most creative, talented guy in the industry. He makes the games he works on other worldly and very personal. He worked on the original campaign but wasn't at the helm. I loved the original campaign. It was very high fantasy and somewhat light hearted. It was a great and grand adventure. But Mask was just on a whole other level. It was so dark, it was a very personal story, and as I said before, other worldly. You totally felt like you were a foreigner in a strange country far from home. It especially felt that way if you played the main campaign. Both games are so great and they'll always hold a special place in my heart.

I think that there was a marked difference between the NWN2 OC and MOTB The OC was pretty much designed to be a campy, hammy, cliche storm that barely took itself seriously and generally just was meant to enjoy for some kicks and thrills MOTB was meant to be an in depth, serious story, and in that role it excelled excellently.
@andrewvincent7299
@andrewvincent7299 6 лет назад
I don't agree with you assessment of the OC, while the story was cliche being that it was the classic monomyth story it was meant to be your character's story from villager to hero. It was a completely different type of story than MOTB. MOTB was a good story but if you think the OC didn't take itself serious then MOTB in contrast took itself way too seriously. It's baffling how completely different the tone is compared to the OC.

The original track on DAO made the fade even more boring lol. This song would have been perfect for the fade. This song perfectly embodies the endless nature of the astral plane. When you first step through that portal in the academy and see Myrkul's remains and the endless skies of the astral plane, it just leaves you in wonder. It wouldn't be the same without this song

It's funny how all over the place in terms of quality the NWN series is. NWN1 OC: Absolutely godawful. NWN1 SoU: Slightly above average. NWN1 HotU: Fantastic, worth buying the diamond edition just for this game. NWN2 OC: Pretty damn good, actually. NWN2 MotB: Better than Fallout. No, really. If you buy one fantasy RPG in your life, make it this one (if you buy two, get Planescape: Torment also). NWN2 SoZ: Fairly crap, though breaking the gold amount by abusing the trading system was fun.

If I knew I think I would probably horde it, no offense to the rest of you fans. I agree, it is a DELICIOUS track, absolutely divine! And I would definitely suggest the other tracks on this OST. None are quite as mystical as this one; but unfortunately there just aren't enough cerebral tunes like this out there. You know, I have always said about this track 1) it is FAR TOO SHORT, and 2) it's like listening to a bottle of Astral Essence in musical form! It's just uncanny how it makes you feel like you are out finding your way on an Astral Plane! I can't get enough. If there were such a thing as an Astral Plane, I am convinced that this song captures the mood and the very nature of it best! I'm actually blown away at what they've accomplished in making this track. It's extraterrestrial.

NWN 1's OC "godawaful"? Hell no! That was my favorite one. The only thing I did not like about the it was the difficulty which was a disorganized mess. HotU I didn't like at all. It brought a alot of new features but killed it with silly gimmicks such as the unavoidable loot strip at the beginning of the module (Some items don't appear in the chest later on either). -Never- strip loot from a hoarding scrooge. And the level 40 cap was pointless. Most modules won't get you there.
