Modeled in Siemens UG/NX Modeling and Motion Simulation packages. Gears generated with the gear tool, treads assembled by hand. Simulation shows straight movement, a right-hand turn, left-hand turn, and a neutral turn.
For the Germans? Not so much as the Tolerances were stupidly tight. One "Hit" on a corner could lock up the drive line as nothing meshed at all. Brand New Panzer V crews were told to not go over 25 mph as the system was failing from the get go with a straight cut main drive gear Vs. a M-4 with a wish bone cut gear.
Of all 3D animations here on YT this shows the differential steering in the most efficient and plausible way. But one flaw is common amongst all of these animations: For steering, they all show that one track stops completly and does not just slow down. But this is one of its biggest benefits, that you can power both tracks during steering, especially important when you use differantial steering on machines like a bulldozer. Otherwise, very well done!
while you are right the video does show what you are saying but it goes to fast. it should take its time showing the track getting slower till it comes to a complete stop.
I understand how it works now, but now I have new questions. If there r 2 input shafts, does the gas/diesel motor attach to both somehow? Or does the gas/diesel engine drive one shaft and an electric motor drives the other?

@@phantommedia9964 its for steering....upper input shaft is electric motor when it spin counterclockwise... tank turns to the right...if it spin clockwise... tank turns to the left

I imagine it stemmed from positraction and the way that when no power is applied to posi, wheels spin in different directions. Then expanding on the use and concept but in an inverse way - letting a secondary drive be stationary to allow for powering of both treads, and power of the secondary drive to control the change in difference between the speed/direction of the two treads.... This is all just hypothetical and me typing out my thoughts as I understood what was happening in the video. I am not claiming this is actually how it came about because sadly someone will think that I am. Needless to say, I completely agree and people are very creative.
Because back in 1995, mixing 2 motors mechanically was the way to go because transmitter channel mixing wasn't really a thing yet. Satisfying to watch, practical for its time, and yet still a clever mechanism.
I think this is a sherman tank but it has a double track swivel feature. And as far as I remember, Sherman tanks do not have such a feature. But when you think about it, this gearbox really works The reason why I say it is a Sherman Tank: Track shapes, cylinders, czar gear, and general shape of the gearbox.
Wish I could put that in the Renwal Bulldog tank I got the Christmas of ‘57. I’d really be happy to find rubber treads for the 63-.year old toy I still have.
Now that electric motors for vehicles are in the "main stream" the differential is in trouble, having an electric motor at each drive wheel can achieve the same motion as differential skid steer vehicles like tanks.
@@tysemilicia9548 For very heavy vehicles like tanks and trucks I can see the diff and gear box has a future, as more cars turn electric a couple extra induction motors would be probably similar cost to diffs and gear boxes. Interesting future.
Cause then they could use the files to create 3D printed parts and build working model. Personally i would like to build actual machine based on this design as hydraulic power train comes with pretty hefty price.

Great video and animation! I wonder why modern tanks doesn't utilize electric motors for the belt drive and a diesel running a generator. I would assume it would make it easier to place the engine and need less space for gears within the tank.
Mainly because in the end, chemical energy generators with electric engines and batteries added are big and heavy and weight a lot more than a already existing diesel engine that can be used to move and power the vehicle in of itself. Combined with the fact it over complicates the Tank's powerplants when a more simpler option can be at bay.
@@voin5371 Sure, but with electric motors directly connected to the belts you don't need a gearbox (in the conventional form) and you can ditch the complex clutch system that you need with a single engine driving the belts. My guess is that the next generation of MBTs and IFVs will use a diesel-electric hybrid powertrain.
@@voin5371 Because with electric motors you have the reduction gears encased and connected directly to the motor housing and the motor can rotate both ways so you don't need to have several forward/reverse gears (like you need with combustion engines). You also don't need clutches. These things combined makes electric motors more reliable and makes them require a lot less maintenance than combustion engines. The engine (generator) can also be smaller and more efficient as it's only task will be to run a generator that powers the electric motors/charges the batteries. Another benefit is that not needing to connect the engine directly to the driving gears gives you more flexibility in placement of the engine. This gives you the option to place the engine in the front of the tank and potentially increase survivability of the crew in case of front impacts. The thing that will add some extra weight is the battery pack, but I think the net benefit will outweigh the downside of added weight. With a battery pack the tank can theoretically stand still and be fully operational with close to zero heat signature. This makes the tank able to scan the surroundings and make the first attack before the enemy can spot it, which is a really big deal in tank battles. Due to these reasons, I believe the next generation of MBTs and IFVs will be diesel-electric hybrids. I might be wrong of course, but we'll see.
А что находится на верхнем хвостовике не понятно. Вот когда верхний хвостовик стоит колом, а нижняя вращается- танк едет. Когда оба вращаются в одном направлении, танк поворачивает в одну сторону, а когда по разному вращаются, то в другую, так? Нижняя стоит, верхняя вращается, тогда гусеницы вращаются в разные стороны. И так, что же тогда им моменты даёт? На нижнюю от двигателя и КПП момент приходит, а верхнюю кто вращает? Видимо есть раздатка с кучей хитровыебанной шестернёй, что-то вроде КПП. Расскажите, если знаете

У вас как-то даже лучше вышло, чем моя задумка. Я хотел спарить два редуктора от мостов, чтобы получилось как у вас, а на хвостовики накинуть цепь и на электро или гидравлический мотор. Нынче бесколлекторные электромоторы очень развились при малом размере имеют очень мощный крутящий момент, да и аккумуляторы литий ионные тоже сила💪. Так что можно вашу технику ещё апгрейдить, но в принципе то что хотели проверить проверили. Бесколлекторные моторы из Китая можно заказать любого размера, регуляторов оборотов тоже много. Но цена на всё это с аккумуляторами дорого получится, можно и гидравлический насос использовать от легковой машины, и мотор гидравлический. Правда там придется давать газу чтобы сделать манёвр
@@nukulay2496 Вот ты сам и сказал-дать газу, моя схема берёт энергию для поворота от аккумулятора. В этом плане электропривод гораздо лучше гидравлики. Гидрообъёмный механизм берёт энергию от мотора одновременно с энергией для движения ,поэтому при движении на высшей передаче с неполной подачей топлива (на малом газу) танк может проскочить неожиданный поворот. Почитай Держанского.
@@user-tj8ti6vs4k Согласен, гидравлика не лучшее решение по этой причине. Всё таки электромотор намного надежнее в плане безопасности, простоте и надёжности. Был бы в нем гидроаккумулятор чтоли, возможно было бы лучше, но так получится усложненная конструкция.

Так что когда есть возможность запасать электроэнергию, наилучшим решением для поворотной системы для гуссеничной техники будет такое решение как вы воплотили в жизнь👍 у меня есть трактор ДТ-75, поворотный механизм там простой, но сущий кошмар, пережиток прошлого. Если бы он так поворачил, было намного легче работать.
I believe this doeasn't really show or explain anything -cause to effects. Not even a visible lever to change direction, so it must be a divine miracle.
i find it best to put it on loop and look at each gear one at a time for a few minutes. would have been better if someone was explaining it in sections. now i know it's just 2 differentials with a reverse input from the drive shaft and a secondary input thru a half differential... wait were is the second reversible input coming from? is there a second engine? i need more info.
My understading is that this is a tiger transmission (though with bogies) and essenstially the engine input is either to a. the main drivesaft propelling the tank foward or b. to the steering. c. both causing the other track to "stop" and doing a braking turn/transmitting the braking sides force to moving side Please exuse me if im wrong im at confusion of this as well.
Видимо у этой системы единственный плюс, это возможность разворота на 360 без проблем. Техника для войны, а нам людям нужна простота и надежность. У ДТ-75 планетарная поворотная система охуенно сделана, только вместо тормозных ленточек были бы диски и суппорта с гидравликой, было бы круче.
Не согласен с Вами Бесступенчатый механизм поворота это лучшее, что придумали для бортоповоротных машин. Нет разрыва тяги ,нет никаких тормозов и лент .Плавность маневрирования, разворот на месте. ДТ - 75 немного доработать и будет то что надо. Похожую схему я применил на самодельном тракторе. Уже три года без замечаний. И использовать фрикционы и тормозные ленты меня можно заставить только по приговору народного суда
@@user-xc2xo1js7d В таком рулевом управлении, я так понимаю, нужен электро или гидравлический двигатель. Вот это меня немного смущает. Ещё меня смущает то, что при поворачивании во время езды с тяжелым прицепом будет сильно нагружаться двигатель рулевого управления, потому что часть тяги он будет брать на себя. В обычном фрикционном типе рул. управления тягу берет на себя дизель, а тут они оба будут тянуть получается, но это только при поворачивании, если ехать вперёд то тянет только дизель
@@nukulay2496 Надеюсь Вас не смущает тот факт ,что в современных автомобилях есть гидроусилитель руля. А во многих колёсных тракторах , грейдерах рулевого редуктора нет вообще. Эта схема придумана немцами в 26 - 28 годах прошлого века. Танки тигр имели такую схему. Теперь применяют на тяжёлых тракторах Катерпиллер и Челленджер. Их вес около 60 -80 тонн и более. Двигатель перемещает машину и груз через главную трансмиссию а поворотный узел ИЗМЕНЯЕТ скорость бортов , не изменяя среднюю. При остановке хода есть возможность разворота на месте. (гусеницы в разные стороны ) Дабы не быть голословным. У меня самодельный трактор по такому же принципу ,но немного другой схеме. Работает конкретно третий год. Если интересно, дате знать
@@user-xc2xo1js7d Вы правы, соглашусь. Поворачивать путём торможения одного борта- это допотопные технологии в наше время, все таки. С двумя дифференциалами трактор будет намного юрким, без лишней нагрузки на ходовой и на всём тракторе в целом будет поворачивать. Дома изготовить такую рулевую сложно, разве что готовую из какой-то другой техники использовать наверное можно. Вы мастер 80 level, если такую и правда дома состряпали;)
@@user-xc2xo1js7d У меня появилась идея. Думаю, можно применить диффы от автомобильных мостов приварив три таких в один ряд. По середине которую заварить, чтобы была прямая передача на диффы по бокам через короткий полуось. На диффах те что по бокам, на хвостовиках приварить по звёздочке, и на нее можно надеть цепь на которую даётся момент от гидромотора. Получится не самая надежная рулевая, но какое-то время наверное будет работать. Надо только понять, от чего двигатель использовать, чтобы та была с гидро насосом. Ещё надо понять, от чего гидромотор подойдёт. Или можно вообще электромотор использовать, китайцы такие продают. Только батареек lition vtc6 надо купить много. Как думаете дифференциал от автомобильного моста сможет нагрузку со стороны полуоси выдержать? Для легкового вездехода
And the Russians still can’t put neutral steering in their tanks. German Tigers, King Tigers, Panthers, Jagdtigers, Leopard 1s, all had neutral steering. Granted the transmission on a Jagdtiger was under so much strain they just broke sometimes. . .
Its very interesting tho its way too complicated and requiers too many pieces to make this option better to independant tracks. Unless its used on a big scale

Its a cool mechanism, but I have to wonder if the complexity is worth it. Why not have a single diff and use differential braking to create the steering effects? Less efficient, but WAY less complex, and can also be done without an electronic brain, and uses common off-the-shelf componentry. But for low speed machinery, I wouldn't even do that. Just use 2 hydraulic motors and a joystick style control that meters fluid to each one. For high speed and long distance, I would consider a generator and 2 electric motors.
