Mingus' Sound of Love on a Jody Jazz Hard Rubber #6 and Hemke #3. This piece is more open than my NY USA Meyer 5, but is brighter beyond that. What do you think? Sound is a major priority for me, which is why I love the NY Meyer. Sound!!
Like the JodyJazz a lot more. It's a bit brighter (I tend to like darker sounds), but at the same time it sounds sweeter and less muddled. Nice playing and nice tone =)
Yeah, it requires a bit more air. I'm using a softer reed with it to counteract this, but in turn the softer reeds play flat when you really push on them. I play mostly with swinging but loud drummers, so I may need to keep with the harder reeds. Always a work in progress. Cheers.
@bdscvmallets I agree with you. The Jody is definitely brighter. whats nice is actual hard rubber, where many modern pieces are Resin. I think the brightness is because the Jody has a smaller almost square chamber. The chamber is almost like a beechler metal in it's shape. I prefer a rounder chamber and round inner side walls for a fatter warmer sound. So, I'm still just playing the 5 NY meyer. As long as I can get those 4 Javas I'll be OK.
IMO the Jody Jazz beats out the meyers. It sounds a little more clear and projects very well. How responsive is it compared to the meyers? Do you have to push a lot of air through it? It sounds pretty good!!
@sugasugaki thanks for your opinion. I like the Meyer NY 5, but these days I'm playing a lot of tenor and the alto is fighting back. The alto reeds that were once resistant enough now feel too hard!! I've dug myself into the tenor hole! Now I need to find a happy medium - but am reluctant to leave the NY Meyer. Wish me luck. We all have to struggle to get our sound. That's the plight of the improvising saxophonist. The change keeps coming.
