NY prisons ban care packages containing food

The prison-industrial complex has many ways of turning the incarceration of human beings into a profitable business model. In New York state, new regulations targeting care packages for prisoners show this logic at work. Friends and families of incarcerated people can no longer send packages containing food to those inside, and are now limited to sending two "non-food packages" a year, purchased from pre-approved, third-party vendors. In this episode of Rattling the Bars, Mansa Musa interviews writer Molly Hagan about this draconian new policy and her recent report for The Appeal, “New York’s Prison Package Ban Places New Burdens on the Incarcerated.”

I can only speak on South Carolina Department of Corrections as I did 3 years in prison there. The guards are the only source of contraband. The inmates literally have their "homeboys" apply for and get jobs as correctional officers. A significant portion of the officers are literally gang members. Bloods, Crips, etc. I'm talking it is so blatantly obvious that I have even seen multiple guards with gang tattoos that are 100% visual, with no attempt to even try and conceal. The craziest thing I saw was a guard that had blood marks tattooed on his forehead. The U.S. prison system is beyond broken. Complete joke.

They were lucky to get it as long as they did no money was being made off of family sent packages so of course they got rid of it. It costs families and loved ones a lot of money to keep their family member healthy and not hungry. People in prison that have no outside support resort to begging from other inmates because they are hungry and have nothing to eat

There is nothing accidental in the way the rules were changed. They were already backwards leaning. More bad Karma for the rule makers and enforcers - and we all have a share of that coming for letting them do it - and for so long.

Prison is supposed to be rehabilitation not punishment...the punishment is that your in prison...the system needs revamped

In America, it’s 100% punishment. I think it started after slavery for blacks and after the Victim’s rights movement for everyone else . It got worse with for profit prisons. Some states are worse than others. This philosophy destroys the people in prison, often making them animals to survive. We forget most of these now damaged people we go back into society.

Sending packages to a prisoners is hard you have to pack it in a certain way or they will not get it. Then the guards will take the stuff you send. It's all a grift

A gift? To who, the prison guards? Imagine that they make plenty of $$ from trafficking stuff, like drugs, f.e., to prison detainees. And the guards can make $$ from other illegal activities that they commit while "on duty". It happens within police departments, as well. Oh, and that is besides govt, military, etc. Happy 4th of July, USA.

Grift or not, you need to realize that prisons actually don't have to allow ANYTHING to be sent in. That's how things go when you abuse, you lose, that's the situation in any area of life.

Package Room Directive 4911, in 2018 they tried the 4911A…. We could only get from vendors, it was extremely expensive less people would get packages, also it got rid of some correctional officers couldn’t take anything they open the box in front of u and u put everything in the net-bag and leave

@@jt2428 all I know is I sent my cousin white socks with grey at the toes and he set it back to me because it had 2 colors on it I considered those socks to be white he said that they were not approved and if he did not send them back to me the guards would take it for themselves.

@@victorybeginsinthegarden In that case the socks would be considered “multicolored” so IF…. He didn’t fill out the return paperwork which “costs money” to send back than he has the option to “donate them” and it goes the the chapel. If they didn’t give him the slip to fill out and the pink slip to sign to charge his account the whatever x amount of dollars than when he and if he “donated” the cops could have stole it but if there was paper work involved I highly doubt it. I will say yes I have seen with my own eyes C.I’d steal inmates snack from packages packs of ciggs missing etc it’s weird how they have no cameras

The wardens, parole boards, judges, etc all make money off the prison system, and the commissary is a huge part of that money making enterprise. This forces inmates to spend more on the prison commissary increasing the profitability of the prison. It wouldn't surprise me if these same people in charge of the system benefit financially from the "approved vendors" by being invested or whatever. Humans ARE chattel property, and our for- profit "justice system" and the financial conflicts of interest of those in charge of it, is PROOF of that.

One thing I've noticed is the biggest apologists for the corrupt UNITED STATES "justice system" are people who personally benefit from said system, and that's THE ONLY THING I need to remember.

My heart broke a little more for prisoners when I heard these inhumane changes! ... How are care packages coming from 3RD party vendors versus their loved ones at all the same! ... And who gets a kick back from the use of third party vendors!? ...hmm lemme take a guess. The same Ole "smuggling contraband" excuse is nothing short of laughable! Politics!!! ...greed power and control... and heads up... the Day is Nigh ALL will be judged accordingly.

Yea for sure. But for these people to be calling them fresh food and vegetable packages is extremely misleading…I’ve seen of all the food packages maybe 5% of any inmate’s package was fresh food. Lol. It was always junk food.Tuna packets and summer sausages

Fyi, cooked food is not allowed at any prisons in Scandinavia... the system has to provide everything neccessary. This is implemented for security reasons. Ppl can hide drugs and other type of banned substances in prisoners food. It should had been banned long time ago.

You all do realize this is to eliminate the influx of DRUGS AND CONTRABAND right??? Also, before anyone jumps down my throat...This program, if implemented properly. Could eliminate the smuggling of weapons and drugs from corrupt prison guards as well. This policy goes both ways.

@@jcomden No. What is needed is more stringent screening for employees at shift change. Implement a 'TSA' style checkpoint and screening with drug dogs when correctional officers are entering and leaving. If need be, hire an independent security firm to do the job. All personal property would be left and picked up at the front desk. No exceptions. Nothing and absolutely nothing goes in or out. Also... I believe any prison guard caught smuggling contraband should, in addition to losing their job. Be banned from state and federal employment or any job requiring a security clearance.

Why shouldn't they expect garbage food? Because outside, you get to choose. Inside, society chooses. If we want to be a garbage society, we feed prisoners garbage. On the other hand, knowing half are non-violent drug "offenders," and many are innocent, if we want to be a better society, we should treat our prisoners well.

Just a heads up, but according to cops I know the number one reason they are against liberalizing drug laws retroactively is that many of those non violent offenders pled down to drug charges.

Wrong. Prisoners get three nutritional meals a day. With fresh vegetables. Many states stopped care packages decades ago. There's too much abuse with smuggling.

Nate Dawg & mom takeover i worked for both a California State Prison (Corcoran CDC), and a county (RCJ Riverside). In both inmates received fresh Apples, oranges, or a banana, as well as salads such as Coleslaw, or basic tossed green with vinegate dressing.

We aren't supposed to be causing extra pain. Were supposed to be making people BETTER. If you want worse people when they get out, keep doing Retributive Justice. If you want better, do better. Norway has a recidivism rate dsr lower than the U.S.. Why? Their prisons are open air, with education encouraged. Yiu wanted to take race out of it? Look at Norway. Meanwhile, the U.S. "justice" system is racially biased. This isn't my opinion. It's facts, backed up by state and federal data.
