If the majority of your viewers are tourists who are just in the city for a few days, you should add another consideration: the "opportunity cost" of seeing attractions. For example, the Statue of Liberty may be a great attraction, but with the lines through security, boarding the boat, sailing to the island, and then waiting in line to board the return trip back, visiting the Statue will eat up a lot of the day. Same with walking the Br. Bridge, same with touring the Met. You can see and do two or even three things for the time spent seeing these attractions. Similarly, Coney Island might be a lot of fun, but the subway ride from Manhattan is nearly an hour each way. Time considerations must be a part of the decision for tourists.

I went to NYC recently for the first time and did the Brooklyn Bridge walk because it was one of the things you "have" to do but I was genuinely surprised how much I loved it. It's such a stunning bridge with amazing views of lower Manhattan. Even though it was cold and extremely windy (which probably worked to my advantage with smaller crowds) it ended up one of my favourite things in NYC. I don't agree that you can't see the Brooklyn Bridge on the bridge itself because you get great views of the beautiful towers and stand amongst the suspension wires, as a photographer, it's a dream!
@jessedylan6162
@jessedylan6162 Год назад
There are too many street vendors lining the bridge selling the same stuff that i thought it takes away some of the aesthetics of this beautiful bridge walk@Saul Goodman
@jacobmassey3897
@jacobmassey3897 Год назад
It's on my bucket list because in the UK you don't get that kind of experience when crossing a suspension bridge. The walkways tend to be off to the side of the road so it dosent feel all that unique but actually walking above the traffic is the type of quirky, unique thing I really enjoy experiencing at least once.
@amandalong220
@amandalong220 9 месяцев назад
I agree! The view of the Brooklyn Bridge is BEST on the bridge itself, IMO. We stayed in FiDi and so it was an easy walk to do first thing in the morning. Beautiful morning light, no crowds, iconic views... one of the highlights for me :)

I am a native Californian, born and raised in the Los Angeles area. And I have to agree with you. I was in the Navy. Out of boot camp they ask you were you'd like to be stationed. Being from California, I asked for the west coast. No one told me they usually give you the opposite of what you ask. So I got sent to the USS Aylwin stationed at the Brooklyn Naval Yards. And wow, it was one of the greatest things to ever happen to me. New York, New York. What a great place. Beautiful, full of life and always something to do. You can't get bored living in New York.

I’d add that if your family arrived to America through Ellis Island, it is not to be missed! It’s actually a great indoor activity if it’s raining. You can look up your relatives on kiosks, do an audio tour, grab a bite. Admission there includes admission to the Statue of Liberty - do the audio tour there as well- worth it. Both places offer a place to get a bite to eat.

The secret to skipping the super touristy part of central park is to enter it uptown instead of 59th st. One of the best parts of central park is The Ramble which you can best access through the 77th st entrance. I also recommend entering at 103rd st to explore Great Hill, The Loch, and The Ravine. Another thing I recommend is walking along the Jackie Kennedy Onassis Reservoir, which can be accessed east or west starting at I believe 86th st. Also completely agree with you on the Met. It is spectacular. I think MoMa is essential too.

Time Square - yes, absolutely. We just came back from NYC and spent there exaclty....10 minutes, probably even less and then two days ago crossed it without even stopping. You get there, take a look around, realise how tiny, noisy and crowded it is and then you move on. One of these places that you just go to to tick off on your list and that´s it. Brooklyn Bridge? It was certainly busy but not packed and neither we bumped into people or had to wait anywhere. So it depends on the time of the year. Statue of Liberty?`Since it´s en route to Ellis Island it´s quite cool. Plus, if you want to pick up a few small souvenirs from the NYC for cheap the gift shop is a good option since it´s owned by the gov. And by buying stuff there you actually support both maintenance and development of this place and not stuff money into the pockets of a private owner. And it offers the best views of Downtown Manhatten. The only snag is - it requires tons of time and during busz periods you might have to wait in line for an hour to get back on the boat to Manhattan....

As a Brit I did a 7 day solo trip to NY I agree that times square is over rated but if it's your first time then definitely go and grab the picture. I really liked the vanderbilt for the observation deck and the experience as a whole there was worth it and you get to see the most iconic views like empire state building. I enjoyed walking the brooklyn bridge but I did the walk early morning, it was a bit much in the afternoon though but great views and DUMBO was nice. I enjoyed the Highline and stopping off for tacos in Chelsea Market. I did enjoy a really touristy day where I did a long walk from the Financial District seeing g the statute of liberty and walked all the way up to Central Park in the summer heat to see all the big named buildings, Bull, ghost busters fire station, friends apartment, Washington Square Park etc I am glad I did the touristy day and got the pictures and the helicopter ride but if I came back I can happily skip that but I am happy I did it. My husband and I travelled from Scotland in February 2020 and we were lucky to get tickets for Statue of Liberty crown. It was good to say we had been but was a bit disappointing as you don’t really see much more than from the pedestal, although it was interesting to see how it was built from the inside. We brought our daughter in February 2022 when crown was closed but views are definitely good from the pedestal. Worth the money definitely 👍

I finally made my first trip to NYC in August 2017. I went SOLO and had the best week of my life! I flew into JFK and hailed a cab into Manhattan. When the cab made the final approach to the entrance of the tunnel on the East River, it was overwhelming... the entire skyline from the financial district, One World Trade Center, the Empire State and Chrysler buildings, all the way up the East River! I remember telling the cab driver that it felt like Dorothy seeing OZ for the first time! I stayed at the Colonial House Inn in Chelsea (since closed and sold 😔), in a 4th floor room with a street view of the trees below and the historic church across. Was there for 6 nights. Managed to visit the ESB on 1st day, was so clear, could see over 50? miles. Went to the MOMA for a Frank Lloyd Wright retrospective exhibit ( the reason I went that August), the Guggengeim, the 9/11 Memorial Museum and the Occulous (where you were standing) The Met, and also saw Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Macy's Herald Square, the NY Public Library and Bryant Park (had lunch next to the Bocce ball area), the Diamond district, Radio City Music Hall, Chrysler Building, 432 Park, Grand Central Station!, sat through Sunday mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral, walked 5th Ave. a few times (once from The Met to The Plaza... 45 blocks along Central Park!), Billionaire's Row on 57th & CPS, and treated myself to a glass of wine at The Palm Court in The Plaza! The Palm Court was absolutely beautiful, as the original stained glass ceiling had been restored. A must-see! I informed my wine steward that it was my first trip to NYC, and was having an incredible visit... she left and returned with a small plate of macaroon cookies, and written in chocolate... "Welcome to The Plaza"! OMG... I remember telling her, now I know how Eloise felt (the painting was just outside in the hallway). Afterward, I rode the subway, back to Chelsea (with my weekly pass), and then hailed a cab for my last thing on my "to-do" list... drinks at The Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village! After leaving the bar... one more thing... at almost 1:30 am, I stood under the street sign of Christopher & Gay Streets... that is my name, and yes, I'm gay. What a truly memorable moment... I cried a few minutes, then hailed another cab back to Chelsea. That Monday morning, a quick breakfast in the area, and a cab ride back to JFK, via a drive-through parts of Chinatown, and Soho, across the Manhattan Bridge, with a view of the Brooklyn Bridge! Unbelievable! I want to go back so bad, and stay another full week. I highly recommend others do the same! 🤗

Even there where no advanced reservations required at that time, now you must made an advanced reservation or otherwise you can not visit it.

i recently just biked over the Manhattan Bridge to go over to Washington Sq. Park from Park Slope, and then took the Brooklyn Bridge bike lane back. i gotta say, the Manhattan Bridge lane was a little nicer because it had actual spots to pull over if you get tired. i noticed some people parked int he middle of the lanes on the BK bridge.

So far I've only been to NYC once in my lifetime back in 2007. For all the attractions you've mentioned in this video, here's what I have to say about them (overrated or not): 1. Now I've already been to the Empire State Building during my first trip so there's no need for me to go there again. I believe the observation deck was worth checking out when I first went there. It was also the first time I got to be on the top of a skyscraper and observe the windy view. 2. I've been to Times Square briefly during my first trip, but that was to see a Lion King musical that my mother really loved. I personally would love to go to Times Square again so I could have more experience of the beautiful bright light signs that surrounds the entire area and also drink a coca cola while checking out the coca cola sign (sounds silly, but it's my vacation). 3. I've seen the Statue of Liberty during my first trip while riding on a taxi boat on the East River, but I've never been to the statue or the island it's located at. I don't know if I would go there since the statue has a bunch of spiral stairs you need to go up to in order to reach the statue's crown. Who knows, maybe I might go. 4. Now I live in the state of New York so the chances for me to see the Madame Tussaud's wax museum would be either in NYC or at the Louis Tussaud's Waxworks in Niagara Falls in Ontario. I would love to go to either of those two since they're the closet to where I'm from and because I would love to see amazing wax sculptures of current/former celebrities. 5. Not only have I seen the Brooklyn Bridge, but I've also been under it too during the ride on the Water Taxi (along with the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridge). Now I would definitely NOT walk on the Brooklyn Bridge, but I would bike ride on the bridge since not only it's less crowded, but also won't take too long to cross it. Also, if I ever get a chance to own a Go Pro and manage to find a bike trail with a good view of the city of Manhattan, then maybe I might record a video of the city as much as I could while riding across the bridge. Maybe I might do the same on the other bridges too, who knows. 6. I've never been to Central Park and I probably might not be able to see all of it due to how huge the park is. But I might see some things that the park has, as long as I don't get easily lost in there. 7. I've been to the Museum of Natural History, but I've never been to the MET Museum. I don't know if I would like to see this museum since the only artifact that interests me in this museum is the painting of Washington crossing the Delaware River. If there are any other paintings that might interest me, then maybe I might go to this museum. 8. I've never been to Rockefeller and I'm probably not thinking of going there during the holidays just to see the Christmas tree. But I would check out most of Rockefeller Center and also take a tour inside and go on top of the observation deck of 30 Rockefeller Plaza. 9. The High Line is new to me, but I might check it out since you can walk on an elevated pathway away from the busy streets. Along with that, I would also like to check out the Hudson Yards which is also new to me.

My kids are pushing for a lot of the overrated places :-|. We're going to go ahead with doing Empire State Building, but I think we're going to do it at night since it's open until super late and it'd be really cool to see NYC lit up from up high.

A lot of these places you mentioned, I think, are places to visit once just to say you’ve been there….lmao!! I have been to all of those places (except the Met) several times. I always tell people if you want to see a Christmas tree without the crowds, go to Wall Street or South Street. Never any crowds there. I, recently, walked The High Bridge for the first time. You can get great views from there without the crowds from the Brooklyn Bridge. 😉

Here are my takes, as a long-time resident: 1. ESB - overrated. I always compare the ESB with the Eiffel Tower. It's (the Eiffel Tower) not overrated when you're at the Tuileries Garden admiring the tower at ground level. But once you go up to the summit, it becomes overrated. 2. Times Square - not overrated. It's free (just don't get scammed and hustled by the touts) and the lights are really pretty. 3. Statue of Liberty - not overrated for the reasons you said above. It's $25 well spent. 4. Brooklyn Bridge - not overrated. Again, it's free and you can choose to not cross if there's a huge crowd. 5. Central Park - not overrated. There's enough sprawl for everyone and tourists. I love the views too. 6. Wax Museum - overrated. Why people want to pay for wax figures of celebrities confounds me. 7. The MET - not overrated. Along with the Louvre, one of the best museums I've been to. 8. Rockefeller - neutral. It's only worth visiting during the holidays when the Christmas tree is up anyway. Side note: Top of the Rock beats ESB as the observation deck to go to. (I haven't been to the One World observation deck so I can't comment on that.) 9. Highline - not overrated. The crowds are fairly manageable and there's enough opportunities to stop and take pictures or read posted materials.

THere are some things you just have to walk through - like Times Square. We spent about half an hour, got some great pics, saw some excellent break dancing then left. Dumbo was gorgeous and there was no one out on that blustery, rain-soaked day. Couldn't find Chelsea Flea but that was probably because of the rain. We decided to try the Met, but the line up was unbelievable - from the door down to the corner. Los Tacos No. 1 was worth the line up - no ticket, no tacos! A Broadway play via Broadway Roulette saved any discussion about what we went to see, and Guantamerra and Momofuku were awesome. But now I have Covid...blargh

Just leaving NY today, 6th July 2023, after spending 7 days here. I think the problem with most of the viewing decks is the time and herding around in lines leading up to actually arriving on the viewing decks. Some of them are over-priced for what they are actually offering, which, at its most basic, is a great vantage point from which to take good photos. The food is also vastly overpriced. The Summit: €10 + taxes for a packet of chips on a plate with a bit of dip. Is unashamed robbery plus the tip to the cashier just for taking your order and not actually waiting on your table

I totally disagree about the Met Museum. I think it's overrated. I never have a relaxing day at the museum there because of inconsiderate people getting too close to the artwork or touching the artwork. You often have to hear security alarms going off or security guards barking at people not to touch the artwork. Haven't gone there in years for that reason.

Just have been to NYC like 2 weeks ago: -High line and Chelsea Market : Check. Statue of Liberty: Check. Empire State Building: Skipped. Times Square: Skipped. Brooklyn Bridge: Skipped. Central Park: Check. Things i did that enjoyed a lot: The Summit at One Vanderbilt. The Edge at Hudson Yards. Roosevelt Island (got there by the airtram and left the island on foot. Ended up somewhere in Queens,it was an interesting experience. Got the subway back to Manhattan later that day). Had a birria Taco at the Bryant park. On the last day,took the train at the Grand Central Madison back to the JFK airport,just 20 minutes down to the Jamaica Station and the Airtrain,i can't imagine how leave the town was before this train line . The thing i hated the most about NYC was some sort of "Resort Fee" that the hotel charged me when i did the check in at the hotel. I was told by other tourists that this "fee" was a new thing that the hotels in NYC began to charge guests this year. If they keep doing this thing,people shoud stay in hotels in New Jersey and take the PATH to visit Manhattan. It would be cheaper.
