NYC "Swiss Army knife" apartment's walls open, fold & slide

Rosa and Robert Garneau's Chelsea apartment is small- just 550 square feet of usable space with a bedroom just 8 feet wide-, but they can both work from home, find privacy (even for meetings while the other is sleeping) and fit all their belongings (sports equipment and lots of office gear) thanks to walls that don't stand still.
Nearly every "wall" in the Garneau's Transformer Loft opens to reveal cabinets, a bed, or even a home office. And all of it was carefully designed for utility and precision.
The hydraulics on their Murphy bed are so perfectly balanced that it opens and closes with fingertips. The 500-pound track-mounted sliding wall that both separates their office/kitchen from the bedroom relies on ball bearings so smooth it makes little noise when it moves, despite being heavy enough to act as a real wall.
The main table in the kitchen area serves multiple purposes thanks to hydraulic legs that have been programmed with preset heights for meals, work (both sitting and standing work desk), and cooking (different for both 5-foot-4-inch Rosa and 6-foot-4-inch Robert).
There is storage everywhere and most of it is well-hidden. In the bathroom, seamlessly tiled walls click open to reveal cabinets and towel rods open to reveal clothes hampers. The bedroom closet has pull-down rods that double the usable closet space. The hall closet has shoe shelves built into the door.
Everything serves multiple functions- even the sliding door serves to conceal shelving when the bedroom is closed. "The analogy I love to use," explained Robert to Dwell Magazine, "is that our apartment is like a Swiss Army knife: a compact, well-designed, functional thing of beauty."

The use of space in this small apartment just blew my mind. There are lots of ideas here that could be taken and used for much cheaper. We all can learn from these examples.

Although I believe the gentleman enjoyed playing with his wall a little too much I thought he had some great design ideas. I also appreciated the skill level of who ever installed the tile in the bathroom. Getting the grout lines so perfect the storage cabinets seemed to disappear, I couldn't even tell they were there until he opened them. So many great ideas in this living space.

that style of tile comes in rolls, and is glued down. Man could you imagine have to lay each individual 1 inch tile down by hand?

Yep sheet form as already said but can also come as a board that doesn't even require grouting. More a 'lamipanel' product. You'd certainly see the join lines however if looking straight at the wall. It was certainly filmed from the angle to give the impression the joins couldn't be seen but as with any closing panel, joins aren't seen if filmed from the angle they can't be seen!

As a NYC real estate agent (with minimalist longings) I really loved this video. What an amazing space they have created. And to his point that real estate prices in NYC can be prohibitive, it behooves people to become creative with their spaces. But I liked what he said about being conscious about the environment and should really try to have smaller spaces.

What a perfect marriage between the austeer dark wood of the interiors of the cabinets and bedroom, that reminds me of european 50's furniture (i love that!) and the stark white modern exterior that bounces and reflects the precious few rays of light from the tiny windows. So deculuttered and so beautiful (although white is totally not my color) I would move into that space, as is, right this second and never regret it. Woooow... Yeah... well done! Omg, that hight adjustable table. I have a kid in a candy shop feeling.

***** I think you missed the very obvious point. That we were sick of how many times he did it, not if the wall could take it or not! Same with most things he went through, Just showing off the same points over and over. Great concepts, but the whole video could easily have been done in 3-5 minutes. It also seemed he was taking all of the credit for someone elses design and products available to us all.

It took a nautical designer, and he glued the tiles himself, and came from a family of cabinet makers... so he starts with a a but more than skill saw and carpet knife. But a wonderfully designed space through and through. He does like his wall, and the blend from walnut to white transformation is quite elegant. Well done.

I love all the closet and storage space and it looks like every space seems to be used really well. I think the wall is a good idea for separating the bedroom if they want to.
