I love this film because it's the only one of Scorsese's films that deals with real feminine emotions and vulnerabilities in both men and women. Usually, men express their emotions in macho or violent ways in Scorsese's other films, but not Day Lewis' character in this. He internalises it.
The Meryl Streep character in The Bridges of Madison County makes the same sacrifice, choosing duty and responsibility over a life of passion and freedom with the Clint Eastwood character.
