Daniel Day-Lewis - 'The Age Of Innocence' Documentary Part 2 

Michelle Pfeiffer rocks my socks. To go from Selina Kyle to Countess Olenska in 1992/93 - to fully inhabit both roles so you see a fully realized character rather then the actress - is the work of a HBIC. And they're wonderful counterpoints to each other, considering how both women (in their own way) battle the male patriarchy attempting to both leash them and deny her personal power. And Madame Pfeiffer truly makes both women's emotional battles palpable: she can do no wrong in my eyes.

Anyone who hates May for being "manipulative" has never been betrayed right in front of their face, and cheated on and lied to by a man to whom they have dedicated their life. May is doing what little she can to hang on to the man she loves and who is rightfully hers. Almost any woman would do the same.

Love everything about the story - the book, the film, the artists...

Jessica: Newland was righteous beyond what duty, culture and society prescribe. So many people fall victim to “DUTY.” I loved Daniel J in many movies, but I fell in love with him when he was Newland in flesh and blood.furthermore, Jessica is this true today? Yes. So many men and women marry because that’s what they’re told they have to do by systems of control, Such as family, friends, culture, society. Rare is the person who says, “no thanks. I’ve got a plan.” Although set in early America, it is still relevant today because there are so many people whose lives are chosen for them, not the other way around. It is so difficult for some people to “tear” themselves apart from systems of control. Especially when you live in the middle of that system The scene where Newland and Olenska are in the carriage and he undoes her glove and makes love to her hand was one of the most beautiful, fulfilling love scenes I have ever witnessed. The word “Actor” lessens Daniel. He is more than an actor. He is beyond what many, many actors will ever achieve due to the fact that he can transform, become, embody, BE that person in flesh and blood.

I agree. The carriage scene is the most sensual scene in all of film. And the narration is exquisite.

In the novel and in the movie none of the main characters were black, or white. - Newland's negatives: He shouldn't have got married so early just to deafen his feelings for Countess Olenska. After he got married his fate was sealed. His positivies: Even though his marriage wasn't that much fullfilling he stayed with his wife and kids. His negatives: At the end when he was free he didn't want to see the Countess Olenska and finally be happy together, he was too afraid the passion, the looks were all gone (his, hers) and wanted to keep just his fantasies. - Countess Olenska's negatives: She should have been more discreet and less reckless with her behaviour, so not to get into gossiping. She should have got divorced from her terrible husband and find love somewhere else, Newland was no longer available. Countess Olenska's positives: She didn't do anything on purpose to seduce Newland and was very hesitant to his feelings towards her. She sincirely loved May and wanted her to be happy. - May's positives: She asked Newland before their marriage whether he really wanted to marry her and gave him opportunity to end their engagement. May's negatives: She lied about her pregnancy to Countess Olenska (she wasn't sure she was pregnant, but told her she was, knowingly, that this will deter Countess from Newland). She was terribly boring, absolutely conforming to the society, narrow minded, snob, didn't let Newland do anything that would be "different", not even open a window in winter.

Winona is still a great actress.

I enjoy the film more with each viewing. It’s that kind of film.

Simply the best!!!

Apparently wealthy men from that time period were a bunch of gossipy old fish wives.

Reading this book for book club. The film seems to follow the book closely. I didn't love this book. I was just too frustrated with Newland. Dude. Nobody told you to hurry up and get married to someone you don't love. You made your bed. I just had no sympathy for him and therefore didn't give a damn about him, much less want to read a whole novel about how he's suffering the fate he created.
