Dude, enjoyed the video. I fish a conventional nymph rig with the weight located above my flies. I see this as a great setup for me because most of the #20 and smaller flies that I tie and use don't have a lot of weight.

Just a thought. You can pull 2-4ft of line in and let go at the top of your forward cast. It will shoot out. Makes managing your line easier. And with enough power on your forward cast, you can even tuck the weights and flies.

For the water Josh is in - this method makes sense but for other situations where you are faced with diverging and merging currents - Euro works better in my opinion.

You can still euro a bounce rig, just use sighter line instead of an indicator.... That's how I fish my bounce.
@justinhorton2951
@justinhorton2951 3 года назад
I was just listening to george daniels speak on combining both methods. instead of using what he called a "sacrificial " weight fly... a piece of shot at the point and 2 droppers above it.. The only reason for the "euro" method of say a jig hook dredging bottom is because competition cant use supplemental weight.

Thanks for another great video. Couple of questions. 1) how much split shot in weight was Josh using? 2) when I have used this technique in the past I tie a tag at the end for the shot with lighter tippet to minimize the chance of losing flies if I snag the weights. Any issues with doing this? Thanks again!
@Jones90090
@Jones90090 3 года назад
“A couple BB size split shot.” I prefer tying my shot a lighter section of tippet as well.
@joshuamena153
@joshuamena153 3 года назад
I was using 3-4 bbs in the video. This is a great rig to help with not losing flies. I think it’s a great idea to tie a tag for the weight. Let me know how it goes. I just put the weights on the point and rarely loose flies. I’ve also noticed using a gang of smaller split shot instead of a couple big ones helps with not getting hung up as much and also helps getting them free when you do get hung up.
@cs1089

@williamklein6749 3 года назад
A few questions. 1. What split shot do you use? 2. How to modify for smaller streams? 3. Wouldn't you have better contact with shorter distance between Strike Indicator and flys. 4. Do you use weighted nymphs or not weighted? 5. Why is a tippet ring so necessary? 6. Top 5 flys?
@joshuamena153
@joshuamena153 3 года назад
Water gremlins are my favorite because they are removable. I would use smaller split shot and indicators for the smaller streams. I’m usually using unweighted flies just to save money lol. Tippets rings are there to help preserve the butt section of your leader. Hares ear, juju Beatis, Frenchie, bling midges, and squirmys

Thanks for the video, Josh. I know you're surrounded by some of the best Euro fly fishers in the world, nonetheless, I'd be interested in your opinion on the relative efficiency in catching trout of Euro vs. bounce nymphing. Imagine that two anglers of equal skill fished the same river for an entire season, one fishing Euro methods exclusively, the other bounce nothing exclusively. Who, do you think, would catch more and better fish?

It's called a drop shot system and it's been around for years. Just ask Kelly Galloup. Blood knots work better than triple surgeons as it puts the fly off the leader at a 90 degree angle.
@joshuamena153
@joshuamena153 3 года назад
I watched his basic nymphing and drop shot video. Imagine how many fish I would of caught if this video was almost two hours long like his 😂
@MarcTelesha
@MarcTelesha 3 года назад
I think doing a triple surgeons or barrel knot and then I uniknot to the line above my "stopper knot" it's a 90 degree and actually I tie flies at home with a small 4 inches tippet with a open uni knot aka I tighten the uniknot but don't tighten the loop. I have a system setup at home and waste little stream tie with rigging.

Hey guys, whenever I use this rig my line that is connected to the fly keeps getting wrapped and tangled around the main leader. Is this due to some poor weight distribution or does this happen because of bad casting? Thanks for the video!

Agreed, once you learn to build and manage the long mono leaders, keep sighter off the water, tuck casts and oval cast, build a nymph box with a large variety of weight and sizes. And learn to fight fish on 6x tippet. Euro is pretty easy .Lol bounce rig is good way for the average fisherman to go catch a few Fish in just about any conditions

@Waty8413
@Waty8413 3 года назад
When a fish hits, the indicator will dart down and stay and you'll learn the difference. But yeah there's still a lot of false hits. If you are fishing over really chunky stream bottom or debris, this rig can be tough to use.
@joshuamena153
@joshuamena153 3 года назад
Yeah when it’s a fish eat its pretty obvious. It was really mossy out this day I was defiantly getting hung up a lot more than usual. But when in doubt set the hook!
@soundbwoikilla764
@soundbwoikilla764 3 года назад
This is a great nymphing technique, especially when you have water flow and long unbroken seams. There is a balance to the bounce, you don't want to be dragging. If you're getting hung up, you adjust your indicator and/or the weight. You'll usually be able to tell a strike from a snag but as these guys ^ point out, when in doubt set the hook. There will be a few false hits.

The rig itself is pretty basic as shown in the diagram. In my experience getting it dialed in is finding the right balance of weight (including any weight if you are using weighted nymphs) and indicator depth for the river conditions. I find this method works best where you have longer, steady, swifter and deeper flows (like in the video). For me it doesn't make sense when the water levels are low and slow or if the runs are short or interrupted. And for some of the euro nymphers, it doesn't make sense at all O lol

@Waty8413
@Waty8413 3 года назад
If you have tons of slack between your flies and bobber on a bounce rig, you are doing it wrong. Ideally. The bobber should be ticking constantly as it maintains tension with the weight which is "bouncing" bottom and crashing into things.

I'd rather just Euro nymph with tenkara. Easy to cast, more natural drift, easier to keep line off the water, super sensitive. Your float is going to move faster than the flies and limit your time in the strike zone.
