That's very interesting! I went looking for more info on Wikipedia and it seems like John's daughter Francesca is a beach volleyball player, while John's other son Niko is a pro football player here in Italy. John's wife played volleyball too, while John's grandpa was also a rugby player. Sports really run in the family 😁😁

@@polobik4231 One of Kirwin's sisters also married into the Ropati rugby league family. Not surprising given both families have strong roots in Mangere.

@@PauliGoniDiaz correct, they are basically a dual Italian-kiwi family, John Kirwan played for Benetton Treviso in Italy where he met and married Fiorella Tommasi, an Italian volleyball player from Treviso. They had 3 children. John went back to NZ and then back to Italy to be coach of the Italian rugby national team, so Luca lived from age 2 to adolescence in Italy (about age 13) and is an Italian national, so when he met Luna Rossa people in Auckland decided he wanted to be part of the group. Selections were very tough (lots of rowing and cycling champions) but this year he made the team. His sister Francesca, like her mother, was also a strong volleyball player in Treviso, and married there in 2023, but in the last few years she has decided to play in New Zealand, where she also competes in beach volleyball.

Actually Luca birned in Italy if i not mistake, in Treviso where his fater was playing. However he talk a perfect Italian.

I read it more as disappointment that the race was decided before it even started, but time will tell

Luna Rossa has always been very popular in NZ, both with the public and with commentators. Patrizio Bertelli was a bit bent out of shape last time, but I don't think people thought that reflected badly on the team. It is easy for a rabid supporter (in sports or politics) to interpret unbiased comments as being biased against their beloved team, and we all love how passionate italian fans are. As well as gracious in defeat...

…ummm, you do realise Luna Rossa was being helmed by an Aussie (Jimmy Spithill - former America’s Cup winner with Oracle…)? I don’t think there’s any such thing as an “anti-English-speaking-bias” going on. If anything, when it comes to the sailing world, you’ll see a [tongue-in-cheek] “anyone-but-the-Americans…” bias more than anything else…

For TV commercial timing. This will be done only this days cause this regattas was done purposedly for TV show and fans. During the actual LV Cup the course will never change.

I've been thinking hard about the same thing, my conclusion is what percentage of the lackluster reaching is due to the boats versus the wind?

@@wilimow I don't know, but I think it is of little relevance. In the sense that if you develop a boat (admittedly technologically incredibly advanced) that travels with the apparent wind and whether you go upwind or downwind the pursuer always travels in your wake, also given the substantially small race course, what fun can there be? It's like going with today's F1 cars to race in Monte Carlo. Nice and impressive, but it's a catwalk and not a competition.

Credi che LR , (o altri competitor) in caso di vittoria, svilupperanno un nuovo concetto per migliorare lo spettacolo? Queste sono le regate adatte alla TV , veloci ( sia in termini di tempo che velocità), non impegnative per il pubblico , adatte anche ad un pubblico non specializzato/appassionato . Un prodotto ben monetizzabile. insomma , la formula usa e getta. 23 minuti di regata più o meno ed è già finito lo spettacolo e poi si riparte con la gara successiva…

I think the problem is technology has been on the forefrontq of everybody#s mind, that the idea of creating a sporting spectacle for fans has slipped people#s minds! I hate to say it but this is going to be a very boring Americas cup!

Totally ininsteristing boring no suspens no show no sense, that's not sailing ,it is just ridiculous technology business and boat speeds Probably a lot of spectators lost

an you remember the 12mJI and how long you spent watching them ! LOL. These raft are the pinnacle of foiling and although they may not represent your everyday club regatta, they are amazing to watch. I suggest you look at more of the metrics to see how and where Luna Rossa took advantage. It's more interesting than sitting back and expecting a gladiator's fight.

Non è che con le barche dislocanti si facessero clamorosi sorpassi. Accadeva solo di poppa, solo se di bolina le velocità erano simili e solo se non ti marcavi stretto andando a cercare il vento, come faceva spesso Torben Grael, finendo per rimettere in gioco gli avversari, come fece con America One di Cayard. Poi arrivavano i neozelandesi con barche superiori di bolina, prendevano vantaggio, si mettevano tra l’avversario e la boa marcando stretto fino alla fine (puro march race). È capitato nel 2000 ed è capitato lo stesso quando Coutts e co. si sono trasferiti in blocco su Alinghi.

@@marcovecchietti7210 in qugli anni sono visti dei bei match race, con anche tante penalità, cosa che con queste barche non esiste più. La noia c'era per lo più col poco vento e con i relativi rinvii, quello sì.

​@@bscgarage purtroppo quest' anno lo spettacolo visto tre anni fa sarà rovinato non dalle barche ma dalla sede del campo di regata. Questo succede quando si presta più attenzione ai soldi e al contesto cittadino di contorno piuttosto che a ciò che conta, cioè lo specchio di mare sul quale si gareggia. Barcellona assolutamente inadeguata alla competizione!

Cmq con le barche del primo decennio degli anni 2000 (e immagino anche quelle prima) c'era molta lotta ravvicinata, ricordo come si sentiva urlare "My way" da una barca all'altra

@@bscgarage non lo so se sono previsti più campi come in NZ, lo spero. Però se nella baia di Barcellona il vento è per lo più stabile, magari su un altro campo sarà la sinistra ad essere favorita ma sarà comunque difficile avere cambi di condizione e imprevedibilità. Speriamo che questa noia sia più legata ad un po' di pretattica dei team e che non sarà tutto così.

It often takes them a while to dial it in. At present I fully agree it's dire, as are many of the camera angles and their timing. I hope whoever McIvor reports to changes his brief, and enforces the changes. In one race today, McI cuts off the answer to an interesting and non-obvious question G Ashby has asked the female Olympic sailor commentator. And why? So he can blather on yet again, at some length, about which leg it is of which race and who the contestants are (and he can never be content with "Italy" or "The US"), as if we all had the concentration span of mullets. Curmudgeon rant mode OFF

I'm also a bit queasy about McI's pandering to the baseball US fan demographic, as when he comes out (several times a minute) ad nauseam, with "2 for Oh" . What next? NASCAR jargon? It's THE America's Cup (a boat name), not "America's" Cup. OK, this time I REALLY will stop standing in the wreckage of my glass house surrounded by stones.... ;-)

Same style, but a tonne lighter and with slightly wider foils. I think that's got a lot to do with how they seem to sparkle in lighter breeze manoeuvres (although there are limits, as GBR found today)

Hopefully they will do as they did last time, and have separate crew comms vids for each contestant in the later races with no voiceover.

I like the citizenship rule, but I suppose Slingsby has lived in the USA for over two years so he passes.

Luna Rossa's skipper is Max Sirena, not an Australian and three out of four helmsmen are Italian.

@@regulus6936 he was meaning the USA team is skippered by Aussies. the French team is all French I think.

Italy have two skipper Spithil and Bruni. And was Bruni toncall the push so he won this start. Plus aside Spithil the whole LR team it's Italian, Jake Kirwan nincluded that borned and growed in Italy. ETNZ have an Aussie to, Outteridge, so what?
