Firstly, he wouldn't care about individual kiwis not being able to feed their families any more if he wasn't at a NATO function. Secondly, there are diplomatic things you have to do as a leader of a country and sometimes they're unrelated to what you really want. For example, if you want a trade treaty to go well in future you have to be on good terms with the government of that country, or if you want a country to come to your aid in a disaster or conflict, you need some way of convincing them to do so.

Where do you get this from? To my knowledge we're still not getting F16s... The number 28 did show up as being the number of F16s the United States was prepared to lease (at very favourable terms which is the polite way of saying cheap) when NZ stopped having fighter aircraft in 1999. But the first point of difference is lease, not buy, and the other is 1999, not 2019. I can assure you we don't have billions of dollars (and that was in 2000) just lying about to get fighter aircraft we have no use for (other than joint military training exercises I suppose) and that aren't very effective since we're out in the middle of an ocean and they'd need refueling before getting anywhere, as proven by the fact that the US Airforce F16s coming to Warbirds over Wanaka from Japan need it.

Ukraine is not a democracy and we should have nothing to do with the war there. While Ukraine is not a democracy, it certainly is a vassal of the US, and is being used as a proxy by the US. It will probably be tossed aside once it has been used up.
