NZDF MCU Camo Test

Recently we have had a fair amount of genuine MCU camo within our store (which has been nigh impossible to get ahold of mostly for our overseas camo collectors) until now - so we decided to give it a spin!
In keeping with our camo test rules, we wanted to pit it in a environment it'd be designed for. This is ironic as it was adopted under the pretense of being a 'Multi-terrain' pattern - spoiler alert; it ISN'T (any NZDF soldier would gladly tell you that in the majority of NZ bush). Whether the NZ Army truely believed this multi-role purpose or intended it for realistic deployments such as Afghanistan, who knows. But I believe to give it a fair shot, it deserves some dry arid terrain (something we struggled to find in our limited NZ surrounds). Any bias aside, we just wanted to see if MCU could any kind of work ANYWHERE AT ALL in NZ.
Would love to see peoples comments and what they think of the camo in general!

whats not included is in the first pattern of MCUs issued out, all the colours started running after a couple washes, resulting in an almost fluorescent white uniform that was basically unusable.

Would definitely be interesting to do a future video on history of MCU and other camos in how their service life/generations worked out with the troops. MCU definitely got a deserved thrashing for 'quality.'

Only one of those took me more than 20 seconds, so I'd say that was pretty terrible given that it's easier to hide on camera than IRL. IRL I'd give this a complete fail except in that particular environment at a distance. Otherwise, you're simply going to stand out IRL to the Mk 1 eyeball looking for you. The old DPM pattern I've failed to see all over the country. Hell, I've run over the top of people and still not seen them even when they swore after getting walked on, although that was DPM and foliage and we were freezing our arses off around the back of Tekapo in mid winter. Hated it at the time, but rather fond memories of it all now, twenty five years later and finally warmed up & can feel my toes again.

They were pretty obvious positions but ironically my camera man said he had a hard time constantly on that cliff face. MCU I have seen lots in person in native NZ bush and I'd agree - its terrible out there. One thing to be fair though, 'woodland' camos have a bit of a easier time with environment - trees/bush cast lots of shadows making it easier for the camo patterns darker parts to disrupt. A pattern like MCU (which really is almost a desert pattern) in a test like this doesn't get the luxury of shadows to help break shape in a more barren environment. It usually has to perform by the merits of its colours/pattern alone

It looks like it would work great in the dry country around the base at Waiouru or in the eastern foothills of the Southern Alps near Burnham. I think the army holds a lot of exercises there. There's vast areas of rural NZ where this stuff would work pretty well but I guess that's closer to where I live than to where you live.

There's an awwwwwwful lot of variation in the terrain make up near Burnham. I can't see that working in more than one or two of them. It's a terrible pattern.

@@iatsd I didn't say "near Burnham", I said "The eastern foothills of the Southern Alps near Burnham. I think the army holds a lot of exercises there."

@@laughingotter1125 Great! They adopted a pattern that works marginally well in 1 location - a location where they will never operate. Seems legit reasoning right there. ;-/ Help me out here: what point are you trying to make? I honestly don't see what you said as a positive for the pattern.

@@iatsd Look, I'll step you through it, you seem to be focusing hard on just one thing I said. I reckon this would work pretty well in: 1. Open country in Afghanistan (although this didn't end up happening). That's mentioned in the video. 2. Alpine training out of Burnham 3. Exercises on the firing range at Waiouru. What I'm saying is that this pattern probably looked good for a lot what they were doing and had recently been doing when they adopted it. It looks like a pretty good pattern for dry/rocky terrain and they were in those environments a lot at the time. Now is it a good multi-terrain pattern? Dunno. I'm not even sure that you could could come up with a pattern that works in all NZ environments, let alone everywhere they might be deployed overseas. Bush camo probably wouldn't work very well in the environments I list above either. What I am saying is I understand how they came to the decision to adopt this pattern, given what they were doing at the time.

It matches gray rocks. It would be out of place in a jungle or wheat field.

Definitely-as I mentioned in the intro, it is a TERRIBLE 'all terrain pattern.' We wanted to see what it would be like in its most likely intended theatre, the mountains of Afghanistan but that terrain here is fairly sparse!
