NZXT H200 Mini-ITX Case Review: Semi-Mini Mid-Tower

NZXT's H200 and H200i cases provide the option of losing the smart device, fortunately, but they still fill a niche market -- and it's one similar to the 280X mATX case.

NZXT H200 on Amazon: geni.us/ruhHBew
NZXT's H200 case isn't too distant in size from the Corsair 280X, and is a few inches smaller than the NZXT H500. This makes the H200 one of the larger mini-ITX cases we've reviewed, exiting the case from the truly small form factor (SFF) market. Rather than compare the H200 vs. the SilverStone SG13 or RVZ03, the H200 makes more sense as compared against NZXT's slightly larger cases -- like the H500 -- or the Corsair 280X Micro-ATX case.

It doesn't defeat the purpose. It has a different purpose. A happy medium. A smaller box that runs full size components, with an easy build. The thing that seems absurd to me is full size ATX in an era where SLI is clearly dying and multiple cards are used by very few people, and optical drives are gone. My favorite to compare with would be the Fractal Define Nano C.

Snowflake's Review: - Warms mostly coming out the back, no good for sleeping on. Top needs to be warmer. - Comes with good toys for chewing and batting. Not sure why Steve keeps trying to throw them away? - Corners just OK for scratching. A bit too smooth, but since Steve refuses to give me scratches on camera anymore... - Likes the shiny, but OMG WHAT IS THAT ON THE FLOOR

As it happens, this case is exactly what I'm looking for to house a build for my parents. It will make use of some "spare" Skylake mini-ITX parts, it doesn't have to be tiny, but I also don't want it to be a huge tower. And it should look sleek and stylish, to fit their future interior which will be mostly white with black accents. The H200 shown in this video fits that bill exactly. Now just to decide what CPU cooler to use... a Cryorig H7 would fit and match the style, but I'm also a little afraid it will look ridiculously huge in this case.

I have a suggestion for testing revisions, I would add a tower cooler and an AIO to your testing equipment. Then use the best option for whatever case you are testing, if you can only fit a low profile cooler use it, if you can fit an AIO use that. It would be a better representation of what we consumers would do, we pick in most uses the best option for what we can squeeze into an ITX case. I know you would be adding variables to the test but when it comes to ITX it is a far better way of showing what we can expect from the case. Great content as always Steve, I love the ITX round up so far as I always have at least one ITX build in use somewhere in the house and it's come on so far as a form factor in the last couple of years it's amazing.
@LordBattleSmurf
@LordBattleSmurf 6 лет назад
We really would appreciate you doing a test with this and the 280x BUT with using the largest noctua tower cooler taking full advantage of the extra size. These cases might make sense for those of us wanting a small as possible form factor BUT still big enough to have good cooling for overclocking something like the the 8700k and a high end GPU. I know im not the only one trying to find out if going below a mid size case like the meshify C or coolmaster h500m is viable temperature/ airflow wise for such a high performance build
5 лет назад
I'm think kinda the same. For me it's being easy to build, and being able to use standard components, while being small.

I recommend the Noctua NH-U9S for cases that allow for a tower cooler. The NZXT H200 obviously supports taller coolers, but the Corsair 280X only supports up to 150mm. The NH-U9S is still a great cooler for its size and at a somewhat attractive price point.

@GN maybe you could add case volume to the charts, like AV Techy does. Had the same „issues“/discussions with cooling, size and test system consistently...it’s tuff with such large variations of these „small“ case types. By adding the volume to the charts, it at least gives a indication of what is being compared. I bet you guys can work out a good system for the future though. Like you guys deserve waaay more subs for the in depth nature of your reviews, compared to the other big guys, AV Techy really deserves more attention for his small channel (I’m just a fan, trying to help him out here and there), maybe you could leave him a comment somewhere, tops/tricks or something...he would definitely go nuts. ^^ love your content and your integrity, you guys are No 1!

The clear distinct advantage of a larger mITX enclosure is the provision for larger and better cooling hardware. This of course is at the cost of increased size/volume. No ones going to buy this case and put in a sff cooling setup in it. They're going to put in a large air cooler or a radiator. People put tiny coolers in SFF cases because that's the best they can fit. I reckon you should really be trying to maximise cooling efforts in this case and comparing that to the best solution in SFF cases. That way consumers can understand what the trade off in volume really gets them. Cases like this and the Fractal Design Define Nano S are for those who want a 'small' setup without compromising in cooling.

The reasoning for this size of a case is for someone who wants to fit larger hardware 300mm+ GPU or big HSF's like the Dark Rock Pro 4 or D15 but doesn't need an S340 size case. I may go from a large case to this in my next build as I just don't use the rest of a mid tower or full tower but I want to OC which requires a decent size HSF. The H200 fits a bigger CPU cooler than the PC-011 and is smaller. This also fits a bigger GPU and CPU cooler than the Corsair 280x

A warning for all those get this case. I just got mine today from nzxt's website for $49.00. Red and black. The front panel is ridiculously hard to get off and when I finally got it off the two bottom clips broke. The top portion of the clips. I am still building the system so not sure if it really affects anything. It was on their so tight it was nearly impossible to get off. The case itself is superb and I mounted two uphere 140mm red fans in front. If nzxt was smart they would make this with a mesh front or make available a mesh front panel you can buy separately. The case looks pretty cool without the front panel on so I might leave it off. I need to get a fan splitter (local microcenter) so I have to wait till the weekend to button everything up. The case is big but not crazy big. Nice beef to it. I should have used some pliers to squeeze the clips in but hindsight is 20 20.

i understand your frustration itx cases come in so many verieties, thats why they are so popular (in my experiance) i would suggest a scaling test system wit starting larger components and similar compact components that only get used if the large components dont work, like a gpu that comes with a large format air cooler, or in a shorter size possibly flashed with the same bio or the same card with a different cooler mounted im not sure of one that would allow this. for the cpu an air cooler system say with only air coolers from noctua that use 120 mm fans, a bsic tower cooler if it fits, a downdraft cooler if it doesnt, the nh-l12s is great for this as it can mount a full size fan above a slim fan above or a slim fan below for many form factors, as long as the core components are the same. i feel this is more representative of how people actually build in these cases, a large case is a compromise space vs cooling potential. but some smaller cases like this are optimized for certain flow patterns. power supplies are tricky, but again i think its more important to represent how people will use them than a singular part that fits them all, a ranked lineup of similar wattages and ratings seams like the way to go as a large psu acting as an exhaust may be part of a system design, and even an sfxl that mounts a 120 mm fan may have an advantage over a smaller unit. i would rather see how you might recommend building in a case where to put fans than a standardized layout. tinyurl.com/y2776ohh and tinyurl.com/y6yz4rbd are some interesting cases i would like to see you check out
@conza1989

What would be really interesting would be to see if when these big cases don't perform as well as the smaller form factor, if it would even be possible (on air) to regain that loss via a larger cooler

The Cat Test: If Snowflake can confortably sit inside the case it isn't a minitITX case... ;) - Looks like NZXT are really doing some interesting new look at the negative airflow. Quite interesting as it allows airflow where a fan may not necessarily fit- also for budget cases they can have fan economy by needing less fans. -I would like to see more top mounted PSUs to effectivly act as a outake fan similar to old OEM systems but with better airflow design and cable/mangaement asthetics and design around less drives but bigger GPUs. - I have alsways liked the Manta- lots of Metal, was hanging out for a tempered glass version which never came. These cases suit people who like to display their rigs more (although the 24pin cable placement as you pointed out suits horizonatl board placement abit more) - Recommnedations to try are cases in the mini ITX tower' category like the Phantex Shift (X) and Silverstone Fortress FT series. I have minmal width but plenty of height space so these At the very least mITX has alot more variety in case designs and must be pretty interesting to do.

16% That's roughly what the HEIGHT increase would be to go with a microATX case of similar spacings. (mobo diff/H200 height). I guess if you only need that single PCIe slot why not? The lower volume cases like the Node 202 all have big tradeoffs such as aesthetics (fan locations), HDD/SSD storage locations, SFX vs ATX power supplies and CPU cooler limitations.

Great review as always GN. Would love to see you guys review the Cougar QBX case. Bought it not too long ago and found the bottom GPU intake cooling interesting. It's choked at stock because of the solid plastic legs but elevating the case (about 1 inch with side openings, learned it from you guys) noticeably improved it. Side panels are perforated too so decent air for the CPU. At $50, 20 L, and full sized components, it's a pretty decent option for an ITX build. Again, great review and looking forward to more.

Somewhat surprised you've not fully tested the Fractal Core 500 - At 18.5L it's half the volume of the NZXT H200 , holds an incredibly serious array of high power kit e.g. Full Sized Noctua D-15/s tower coolers and (theoretically) up to 280mm radiator as well as fans (I have 3 , in addition to tower cooler) - I suspect it's even better for cooling than the Silverstone Sg13 . Worth looking at.

Thanks for the mITX case reviews! With SLI/Crossfire support having come to an end, I see no reason to buy full sized boards anymore. Especially since there are a few high quality mITX boards that let you overclock very well. I am in the market for an mITX case that doesn't sacrifice CLC space/performance. I don't want a tiny case, just one small and stylish enough that won't hinder overclocking too much. EDIT: The phantkes Shift X would fail Steve's tests so bad with the video card placement.

Good one. No one believes me that intakes are not necessary. That case is too large though. Shrink it down and they will have a winner

I was debating doing a mini ITX build using this case, but ultimately went with the H400 micro ATX.

You should compare this with the older Define Nano S. Its cheaper almost as good looking if you prefer a black color only and no tempered glass. But you can fit dual 280 rads and fit air coolers short of the D15S. Did I mean in it's only 70 dollars.

Thanks for giving us the Full GN shakedown of a GREAT CASE.. I thought the Manta was overprice plastic feldergarb . I appreciate half size box with room for tower cooler ATX PS and standard video card ..Also this is priced right IMO. Kenny

I just build a new PC using this case (the i version). I was able to fit a GTX 970 G1 and an ATX power supply, GPU temperatures are at most 2°c higher than in a Corsair 600T, my previous case. added a kraken x62 at the front, very tight fit tbo, dust filter and fan frame removed to be able to fit it

can you do a review on the Bitfenix Prodigy (itx)? i know it's not a knew case, but i think it's one of the best when it comes to airflow and all around a solid case in my opinion, would love it love your videos keep it up!!

Not new might be an understatement of the century, it's been around for well over a decade. It's the granddaddy of many modern case designs. Which is not a bad thing. Wish i bought the Outlaw back in the day :(

I love you GN, I really do. And maybe its a stickler-type thing or something but its beyond me that you guys can afford a Titan V, yet still use a WAY outdated top mounted 24pin connection motherboard?!

I've got this case and generally like it. Cable management options are good, and a Kraken X52 AIO fits nicely in the front. I have a Ryzen 2700X and overclocked 6Gb GTX 1060 in there and temps are great, even with a full size PSU beneath the GPU. I don't like the included fan / RGB smart device, its like a cut down version of the Hue+ and is very limited in the number of things you can plug into it.

the filter on the top exhaust would help when the machine is switched off so dust don't fall inside, no? If the impact on the thermals is not significant I'd keep it there

not sure if the tests were done with the IO shield missing. I see you put a sensor in there. I don't think that reflects the average setup for long term owners of this case. maybe you could explain that part next time. I am a bit confused as to how the tests were done.

I like the width because I already have a massive mini itx case. I have the razer antec cube, had it since 2017 and I think I'm gonna downsize to the h210. The razer antec cube is literally the size of a full ATX tower. This is gonna be a huge downsize and upgrade for me

Please review the Corsair 250D for your ITX coverage. I would love to see what airflow provides the best cooling. Also I feel you should test three categories for ITX CPU cooling: Downdraft, Tower, and Radiator.

The reason cases like these are large for mini ATX is simple: space for water-cooling. Trust me, 28 liters is pretty cramped for basic liquid cooling kits.

Missed a trick here. You should have put the cat inside the case and then you could have appraised yourself of the airflow- the glass panel would avoid a Schrödinger's cat paradox (finally a compelling reason for glass panels.

I have the Define Nano S from Fractal. It looks to be about the same size but the Nano S has a lot more support for water cooling. No PSU shroud but if wanted they are easy to make. I would be curious to see a temp comparison between those 2 cases because they are so similar. I use mine for an HTPC and it works very well. Large for an ITX case but I have lots of room. Because ITX Mobo's have so few fan ports I think the big missing link is having one built in to the case. It would be very helpful, especially because it has so much room for watercooling.

I always think bigger itx cases are nice for making 'tiny water loops'. Real itx cases are a fuckin mission to fit watercooling into which sucks since the airflow is usually a little worse on small cases. So if you were ever wondering who the hell would want a big itx, its me :)

I built a Fractal Nano S build that's about the same size as this. The size is an interesting compromise. Normal mATX builds in this footprint have to use expensive SFX power supplies and other oddities. By shrinking the motherboard, they make room for full size power supplies. The Fractal Nano S has an interference problem with the GPU fans when an ATX PSU is used. I'd be curious if this case has that problem too, since you used SFX.

Eh, while I would've liked going FULL SFF, the H200 scratched my "modern design" itch from an ITX case. I couldn't justify waiting for and spending so much extra money on an NFC S4 mini or the like. Worth noting that the H200 does have some unofficial support for 280mm radiators; also, in my anecdotal experience, the fan cage actually made installing my AIO with very stiff tubes much easier to install.

Nice review but you got some things wrong first the top will not fit any radiators no matter how slim there is not enough clearance for the ram. The cable bar is terrible for water cooling not so much the bottom bent for the CPU to the 24pin atx cable part but the top bent as it takes away from the clearance for res/pump res. Also the back while it does take 120mm rads not all of them will fit as the clearance towards the glass is limited any 120mm rad wider then 140mm will not fit. Also fan positions are not aligned properly with gpu and such fittings will not line up properly making it a pain to get bends done if you do hard tubing. Anyone looking at the h200 should go with the phanteks itx while it also has some issues it is infinity better for water cooling and it's cheaper.

If they had made the basement sfx only and maybe vertical GPU to make the case more narrow it'd easily get to 20l. And I'd have bought it
