I always thought snooker was a much harder game. While in the Navy, I worked part time nights cooking at the under 21 club where they had 4 pool tables and 2 snooker tables. When I was not busy, it was free for me to practice pool. I love the game, but usually the pool tables were busy. So I would play snooker, or try to anyway. What it did for me was sharpen up my aiming. I would go out in town later and clean up on the bar tables. Won a lot of Saturday evening pool tournaments like that.

Snooker is harder for sure but just because pool is easier doesn't make it easy. Like you can pocket the ball better but so does your opponent. Winning would just be as tough. The transition is the only difference. A snooker player would be able to compete in far less time while a pool player might take years to transition unless your name is Efren Reyes who can just simply play any game.

@Daniel-ih4zh

But because the basic of pool is easier, the standards for positional play are much higher and it self corrects. I'm not saying which has more skilled players, but just because the table is easier doesn't necessarily mean it's easier to beat your opponent.

That's one big difference with Snooker and pool is that you have to go in an order at most US pool types, but with snooker, take any red and then any color as your next shot. Sure you get more points depending on which color ball you hit, but the table is open and yours to choose from. In US pool types however, there are many games where you must get a very particular position to hit your next ball.

@@mikescorpio13 snooker is MUCH HARDER because of the tables NOT because of the game. A pool table is MUCH EASIER to play on,the pockets can except the balls a lot easier,you can fit two pool balls in the pockets but in snooker only one and half balls fit in the pockets and you can cheat the pockets in pool .It’s 12ft by 6ft so 72 square ft whereas a pool table is 9ft by 4.5 ft so 40.5 square ft of playing space. The balls can hit the rails and still go in on a pool table but not in snooker and a pool table has diamond markers on it,helping the players with bank shots etc The games are totally different and I agree that a lot of snooker fans don’t realise or appreciate how good the pool players are,but talking about it from purely the difficulty of the table then snooker tables are definitely harder. Any serious room here is going to have pockets well under 4” and the majority of the better players will play one pocket, and it’s truly an apples to oranges comparison. Nothing but respect to O’Sullivan, his game is beautiful to watch (even as a pool player), and yes, 9 ball (or for that matter 8-ball, even tho that’s a league/pub game, not really for better players very often) is too easy for all of us here who play (or have played) for a living (and most legit good amateurs), but one pocket is a totally different thing. If any snooker pros think it’s easy they could practice up and get action from hundreds of us no-names the same as we would get killed trying to play snooker lol. American audiences have no patience for real games, hence the rise of quick and easy 9-ball on television. Really killed pocket billiards, I’m really glad to see cue sports still earn a good living somewhere at least, would love to see a match at the crucible before I die. Perhaps combine with St Andrews for the Open on a trip. Anyways, respectfully from across the pond... a washed up pool player.

Playing 8 ball. On a very short table. Occasionally. That game on a bar box is intentionally made to be much easier. The problem is many of the best pool games require putting balls back in play so they don't work on coin op. And obviously pub/bar owners care about space so you get basically a toy table. You can play pool for 50 years and never go 150 and out in straight. That's a more apt comparison but that discipline is no longer very popular for tv. Comparing the easiest game of baby pool with adult size snooker is a little pointless.

The real truth is you can't really "know" who is better. but IMO, from being a pool player myself, watching the way they handle the cue, their stroke, their shots, etc. Efren just looks more talented. Like he was born with it. If you watch "highlights" or whatever, snookers are like oh watch him make this long shot... yeah, I get its harder than a normal table.. still that's hardly something to "highlight"... after all they miss more often as well. Then watch Efren make unbelievable shots in tournament setting, consistently! masse shots, carom, multi rail kisses, etc. like more than just making a long shot, he controls the cueball with such dexterity it goes beyond what snooker players even understand. While still setting himself up for next shot or whatever some snooker players think doesn't exist in pool. He can make these long shots that supposedly so amazing as well, and it's not even a highlight for him.

@SimonAyersPool 2 года назад
If you want a serious explanation - a lot of pool players live in places where they could be hundreds of miles from the nearest snooker table. A lot of lower and mid-level 'pro' pool players probably don't have strong enough cue actions to hold up against decent amateur snooker players. The top pool players have decent techniques and bags of natural talent but they also have a living to make. Lets say someone like Albin Ouschan, for example, decided to try playing pro snooker. He would have to get access to a decent tournament quality table, find someone of similar standard at snooker to practice against and put in hundreds of hours getting used to the different conditions and type of shots that snooker players play. He would also have to do the drills that aspiring snooker players are doing all the time (cueing exercises, long straight blues, long potting, line ups, etc). So we would be talking a solid year of effort to get ready to compete at Q-School. A year he isn't competing at pool and earning his living. And even then, there is nothing to say he won't play well at Q-school and still lose because he came up against the next Zhao Xintong or a lifelong experienced snooker pro that has fallen off of the tour. Your analogy is cute, but only one person a year is making £500,000 from the World Snooker Championship. The majority of players on the tour aren't even making a decent living. So it is a massive risk for a top pool player to give up their livelihood to try snooker and potentially make nothing from it. That said, I would love to see a few more give it a try. I watched Alex Pagulayan's final match at Q-school live and he seemed pretty competitive to me. Corey, less so. But even then, despite Alex having played snooker for years, he probably still hadn't put the hours needed in to it compared to the other Q-school players.
@scambodia147
@scambodia147 2 года назад
Simon Ayers Pool so in a nutshell,the money is in snooker,granted world championship is the biggest prize money,but look at the annual prize money in a year on the snooker calendar,pool prize money dwarfs by comparison,top 16 snooker players are loaded,top 16 pool players nowhere near so,without sponsorship it's a hand to mouth game,more money being an unknown hustler with a sneaky pete!
@SimonAyersPool
@SimonAyersPool 2 года назад
@@scambodia147 well it is more a case that there are probably only a few pool players that have strong enough techniques to hold up for snooker and they are the ones winning all the pool tournaments. So do they risk making nothing on the snooker tour or making a bit of money (but not as much as the top snooker players) playing pool? Reality is most of the top pool players are probably too old now to get good enough to be top snooker players as it takes so many years of practice. And even then they may never get close. SVB is arguably the best pool player today. But a lot of that is because of things like his phenomenal break, or his pattern play, or how good he is at combinations and banks. Things that count for nothing at snooker. Jayson Shaw or Joshua Filler might stand a better chance because they are amazing potters but they are also very natural and loose with their cue actions. So it again may be too little too late to migrate to snooker. If anything I would think someone like Ko Pin Yi or Alyosius Yapp could do well at snooker, but they might have never played the game in their lives so we’ll probably never know.

@@mikeserrano734 No money in snooker? Are you blind? O'Sullivan is many times richer than Reyes, he makes him look like a pauper. You don't know anything about either sport, that is obvious, Reyes even said himself that he needed a heavy points start. O'Sullivan would now be able to take many racks of pool against Reyes, on a snooker table Reyes would lose every single frame. Have you just watched the world snooker championship, £500,000 first prize, 10× more than any pool tournament pays. As O'Sullivan says, if any snooker player focused long enough on 9 ball then they would clean up against a pool player. The skill levels are way higher in snooker, and having competed at regional level in the UK I think I'm reasonably well qualified to make that claim. Even I would have easily beaten Reyes on a 12ft snooker table, much more difficult pockets, no easy cushions to help the ball in, and 4 point contact needed for maximum accuracy.....not the 2 point contact that pool players can get away with. Go and learn something about either sport and then debate. And whilst you're at it, go and watch Reyes playing snooker in a video from 3-4 years ago, it's pathetic! The man makes some very strange claims. But I'm sure you won't do any of this because you know I'm right, so just keep shouting.

@@960john Not an arrogant individual at all, however i am an ex county level player in the UK who can still easily compile consistent century breaks. Reyes is a pool player, plain and simple.....he does not possess the accuracy required for snooker, largely as a result of the contact points in pool. He may well have become very competent if he had worked hard at the game, but he didn't and that really is that. So to recap, yes, I would definitely have defeated him in a snooker match....comfortably!! And since you clearly don't understand either discipline, you are hardly in a position to debate it with me.

Snooker is a less popular cue sport. If it is popular in the Philippines, Efren would be on top of it. That sort a scoring keeps your opponent in his seat and you can beat literally anyone. And at that level you can give them a broom and they would still perform well.
