O was originally meant to be released on October 17, 1999 by its original distributor Miramax Films because it was filmed between March 6,1999-April 13,1999. Sadly due to the columbine high school massacre Miramax shelved it for 2 years. It wasn't until 2001 when Lionsgate bought it from Miramax that it was released
Justin Marquez yes Miramax had planned to release it on October 17,1999 but later postponed it to November 1999 which was around the Christmas season and just in time for the Oscar nominations. Columbine had happened that on April 20 of that year and everyone was blaming the entertainment industry for school violence
@@Stopwar1234The Hollywood premiere of O occurred August 24,2001 and then it was released theatrically on August 31,2001. They look different due to the fact that it was released two years after its original release date because of Columbine and it came out months after Julia Stiles movie Save The Last Dance came out but O was not the first movie Julia Stiles was in that was shelved. The movie Wicked which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 1998 was meant to be released theatrically in October 1998 shortly after Paramount picked up distribution rights but Paramount backed out and it never happened, Wicked was shelved for years until Columbia TriStar picked it up and released it straight to video in August 2001 the same month O was released.
This movie was so good. I found the DVD at a thrift store (I actually found a bunch of classics) can't wait to watch it again. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who hasn't seen it, you won't be disappointed 👌🏽
I saw O in Senior English Class on Tuesday. I thought the movie was a dark and suspenseful modernized retelling of William Shakespeare's Othello with incredible performances by Mekhi Phifer, Josh Hartnett and Julia Stiles and amazing directing by Tim Blake Nelson from Holes.
I'm kind of surprised they let you watch a R rated movie in high school. I only seen it once but I remember there was a sex scene in it, did the teacher fast forward it or let you watch the whole thing without skipping anything?
This movie (and the Shakespeare play) are my example of an interracial couple done right. The betrayal here isnt fueled bby race it's fueled by jealousy, showing it is treated as though it were an ordinary relationship, and doesnt need to be pointed out all the time. And to think this play was written in the early 1600s
I know this comment is nearly a decade old now (Jeez, RU-vid has gotten old!), but it's frightening to think that there's still only a handful of people who understand Othello in this way, the way it was intended, and I needed to leave a comment just to corroborate and further elaborate on your original comment that this story is in fact - A story about the gullibility of two headstrong young people in love, a story about how harmful prejudice is because of what it does to the victim's sense of self-worth, a story about the fragile nature of friendships and how you can never be too certain about anyone's real identity, and how a psychopath indirectly murders two people through meticulous planning - 100% MOST DEFINETELY NOT a story about the incompatibility of interracial relationships.
@@Youtub3rh4x0r None of what you said negates the idea of it disparaging interracial relationships. There is an argument to be made that the bad fortune of the handkerchief (and its role in the plot) is the will of nature/god enacting upon the world. This occurs in many of his plays. Shakespeare was from 16th century England not 21st century California.
@NorthPhilly Because supposedly he favoured Odin (school basketball captain) over Hugo (his teammate), causing the resentment (the same way that Iago hated Othello for passing him over for promotion in the military, favouring Cassio).
Já têm mais de 10 anos que eu assisti e esse filme e eu nunca me esqueci desse Odin James, se algm pudesse postar o filme completo eu seria eternamente grato à essa pessoa!
HandyAndy I know right. She was in Save the Last Dance which came out in January 2001 months before O did, and O was filmed 2 years before Save the Last Dance
It's such a beautiful movie! Lately a lot of people (like The Royal Shakespeare company ) have tried to addapt Will's plays for modern times. I don't like the result- they preserved the original text and dumped some tanks and skyscrapers in the background- horribly artificial in my op. This version is true and natural- they don't pretend to play Othello, yet they are true to the plot. The story is universal: race- love- betrayal- hot blooded youth- jealousy and death. They didn't just give O a bunch of modern army uniforms and say he was fighting in Syria or smth. They created a whole context where the story could work : teenagers and basketball. At basketall a boy of colour can shine like no other arousing admiration and hatred. And the words are modern ! - no posh quotes from Shakespeare- if you want to make everything modern- then modernize it gently and respectfully. I hated " Romeo and Juliet" with Di Caprio - the lines uttered by punks on motorbikes sounded soooo false! West Side Story- is a modernized version of R &J , but done with delicacy and it has a value of its own. Just like "O".
This movie was just based on shakespere s play "Othello". Its a tragic story about how jealousy can ruin not just your life but many others' lives as well.It aint bout whites and blacks!Thats just to emphasize on how O was the black hawk amongst the white birds in the school seeing he was the only black student there.Jeez!Quit being so racial in your thoughts!
Underrated teen drama. This movie has some vibes of Harvard Man with Adrian Grenier, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Joey Lauren Adams as they both feature basketball 🏀 players and school life
@navetube yeah Julia Stiles is awesome, and funny how she was in both the updated Hamlet and 10 Things I Hate About You (Taming of the Shrew) she's a regular Shakespearean actor
seems very inaccurate, Desdemona never defied Othello, ever, she did everything to be with him and to make him happy, she felt whatever he was mad at her for, she had to be at fault, she was innocent, it's her tragic flaw.
***** No, she obviously doesn't, but never once in the book does Desdemona say something like "If you want me to be your wife...", she never gave an "Or else" consequence to Othello, she did everything and anything for him, she constantly if Othello was mad at her that it had to be her own fault.
***** I'm glad they left that out. That doesn't sound like a critical character flaw, it sounds like an unrealistic writing flaw. What's the point of a girl that doesn't even have the self respect to defend herself in the face of losing the things she wants?
***** Because that's how innocent she is, we all know people so innocent that there isn't a thing wrong with them(To the point where it's so annoying you want to punch them in the face) and they existed even more during Shakespearean times because affair was so unheard of. Not to mention, it's not just innocence, it's also ignorance, which shouldn't be hard to believe that people do in fact posses today.
***** Eh, watched the movie last night and in the context of the movie, any other reaction would have been unrealistic in todays world. She's made up to be more of a strong character and smart... she is certainly innocent in the movie of any wrong doing. I think on the whole it was a pretty good adaption. I think the story lends itself better to the time period it was written in cause there's a lot in the movie that feels out of place just because of the setting and the way people act today.
@Ryuuusa Othello was meant as a morality play based on jealousy, but also to show the bigotted racial attitudes of the common white audience, and their fear of the unknown moors. This is primarily shown in Brabantio's belief that Othello lured Desdemona with magic.
life can be a sad movie with 4eva weeping in regret that never ends. Amazing Grace is missing once again. thanks for your heads up...we all should get the happy way now and forever in forgiveness and His friendship John chapters 3 & 10
@@davidisrael9412 we can forgive, but we can never forget my friend. I think people who are capable of forgiving someone at any given situations or circumstances are saints.
@@muradosman9998 thanks, Forgiving is to me releasing our feeling/grudge and letting God take care of the situation. Often the one we won't forgive is ourselves= the one who needs it most. Help us Jesus, amen. Then we can follow His plan stress free happily in His peace...shalom
@@davidisrael9412 I agree with you my friend that forgiving help our soul heal and free it from animosity and grudge. It’s just that I’ve been in situations that affected my life negatively. I act okay in front of people but when I’m by myself the bad memories I had play themselves over and over. I try to shake them off, but I can’t. Some of those who hurt me so bad tried to reach out and asked for forgiveness, but I told them to stay away for the pain is beyond my control. I admire your good heart for its will to forgive and forget. But what an I say? Not every one has that will power.
@@muradosman9998 this may sound strange, we do not have the power to forgive especially ourselves and my dad says making excuses for not doing what we need to do is just a lie.. We need to Tell Jesus you and everyone, are helpless and hopeless too, Can He handle it? His own disciple turned out to be a theif and betrayed Him. Our sins sent Him to the cross where we spit on Him and nailed Him on the tree He made. Yes i have been betrayed too, my own Jewish Mom tried to have me committed to a mental hospital for my believing in Jesus. I had 2 choices in both of these. The Miracle is not that we can forgive others, it is that Jesus unconditionally loves us. Dear Jesus help me, i doubt you can fix this, but I will trust you, amen. So now it is in His hands...let me know if He fails, it will be the first time ever!
now i have a face to the name Makai Phifer... sp? anyways, eminem sings about him in Lose Yourself. i always wondered who it was. i've seen this movie before bc i owned it for a while. know i know who Eminem was singing about.
Let heaven and men and devils, let them all, All, all, cry shame against me, yet I'll speak. I kissed thee ere I killed thee: no way but this, Killing myself, to die upon a kiss.
does anybody know the song while they're playin basketball and some rapper sings like "i,m black like ..... black like ...." a.s.o please i searched my ass of but couldn't find that song =(
