Olivianna Faye Calmes I think your just used to thinking that they were using instruments when they were actually throat singing/ over tones. Also, there Mongolians which is apart of Russia, if there the Chinese people you were talking about.

... oh wow. I can do a bit of overtone singing and we noticed when I did it, my mom's dog would freak out and focus on it. So we decided to play her this song. She kept swaying her head back and forth for her ears to pick up the sound and seemed utterly amazed.

@@phatmanxxxl not unnatural but the contrary; natural but forgotten. Our voices were made for more than just speech, we were the instruments before any were made.... as we became more dependent on all our creations (physical and intellectual), Thus began to further ourselves from our own. IMHO

I channel overtone singing, I have no idea how I am able to do this (it only makes sense that it's an ability remembrance from a past life), but it reverberates inside of me and I feel that it's somehow healing in a way, but I don't understand how or why - I will have to do some research on it. Anyway, my animals, two cats and a dog, dislike it. I thought it was just me since I am not a professional singer, but, as soon as I started this video, my one cat jerked his head up in great irritation and immediately jumped off of my lap, so it's not my terrible singing, its the overtone singing in general that bothers my animals (again, I don't know why!)! It is beautiful to hear an amazing professional sing this way, it makes me feel all buzzy inside!!!

for explanation: polyphonic overtone singing is overtone singing with changing fundamentals, they change in a harmonic or counterpoint context. overtone singing on one fundamental ist not polyphonic. :)

@@lotsagrapes I mean probably not... Like how many people in the history of the world have been able to even do this well enough to compose something like Scarborough Fair? a few hundred ever? Anybody can harmonize, accompany, or play an instrument that can hit more than one note at a time to create a cord... Have you never heard a harmony before? what makes Scarborough Fair any more likely to have originated from one of the super rare people that would be able to do this? As opposed to just being a regular folk song that people traditionally harmonize, or sing in a round? I think there is zero evidence or indication that polyphonic overtone singing had anything to do with the origins of Scarborough Fair.

Seems most animals dislike overtone singing, my cat and the neighbours dog get really afraid of it en try to get away asap when I (try) to sing this way. I've got a theory, and what if ancient man, used this skill to shoo undesireable animals like, let's say, wolfs?

+Dog Meat I love it, maybe you can do it also. For me comes all together I was searching for. I sing a capella with three houemates since 2006. I was a violinist and I teached my housemates music, playing the viol and lute and sing a capella. We sing in a very meditative way, renaissance music, sitting on the floor, very, very slowly, to become overtones, nearly without time signature. This video and others from Anna Maria I see today for the first time. Finally a woman who sings beautiful, clear and without ego. Her explanation is simple and clear. sorry for responding to a comment 6 years after it was posted, but I just figured I needed to chime in. it personally freaks me out, it gives me very uncanny valley vibes, but for voices. it sounds like something human sounding is trying to replicate human vocal range and it's creepy, but I'm so oddly fascinated by it

As overtones are just the frequencies that compose every natural sound, just sing a single word, a single note carefully and slowly, one breathe for one word and feel what happens. As you work playing with your voice, if you focus on the harmonics they will just arise from your fundamental. Words as Mary, Music, Year, Omar... And try to sing as the singer you are, wide opening the back of your velum. And feeling the resonance.The deeper your voice is, the better your overtones will be. Just keep on playing and enjoying it.

У вас удивительный талант , вы очень тонко и точно чувствуете и воспроизводите звуковые колебания .При помощи ваших способностей можно в правильном месте сильно раскрутить Хару, другими словами возбудить энергию окружающего пространства . Не сомневаюсь, вы сразу это почувствуете и сможете управлять , как под куполом собора . Это может быть место у скалы или в бору где много оголенных стволов сосен . даже на открытом месте но там тонкая работа и место надо выбирать по особенному . В таких случаях включается в работу силовое поле земли , создается круг, купол , звучание как в храме , очень удивительное явление . Просто хочу чтобы вы знали . Желаю добра .

I learned to do some of that, but it's very difficult to make the second sound project as clearly and have as much dynamics as hers. For those who don't understand what happens, it's like reproducing the sound of "u", as a base vocal sound, and at the same time something like the sound of "e", almost like a whistle formed in the region on the tongue.

I used to have a record of Hildegard von Bingen's compositions sung a cappella. This is SUCH a treat. She wrote them just for melody; no harmonies. But this is just incredible.

What do you do when you get back from doing this? Do people at work know you do this? I just imagined you escaped for a second to make this video, went back to your apartment and edited to put it together and then come Monday clocked in to your job to do....not sure lol. Sorry, mind wanders..any way, tried to do this and failed. Cot cramps in my mouth..

Is this an acquired through practice skill or one that started occurring instantly upon your first singing experiences and chalked up to difference/s in your larynx/voice box/throat?

I can't speak for everyone, but for most it is a skill you need to practice, and with time and some dedication almost anyone can produce overtones. I had zero prior singing experience, but practiced off and on for overtones after learning about the sygyt style of throat singing. Took me around a year of halfassed attempts to master. Others can get it right away. Obviously, more practice = faster learning.

I knew the erhu is the most human-like instrument, but goddamn this is a new literal. I had a hard time determining if it wasn't actualy an erhu melody.
