In this video, Mr Sean Chua, Chemistry Specialist of more than 20 years of teaching experience, highlights to his weekly Sec 4 GCE O-level Pure Chemistry lessons in Winners Education Centre, on the Solving Rate of Reactions Question involving Rate Graphs.
Rate graphs is an essential concept in reaction kinetics, students would need to know how to interpret and describe a rate graph as well as to plot/sketch a rate graph.
In the previous video, Mr Chua went through how to describe and explain the shape of a rate graph. Check out the previous parts here:
• O Level Pure/IP Chemis...
In this video, Mr Chua will be going through the sketching of a rate graph. Different from the description of a rate graph, students only need to deal with 2 parts of the graph: the slope region and the plateau region.
In the slope region, students need to take note of the steepness of the slope:
The slope would be steeper because of :
1. A higher concentration of LIMITING reactant
2. Higher temperature
3. Increased surface area to volume ratio of reactants
The slope would be gentler because of :
1. A lower concentration of LIMITING reactant
2. Lower temperature
3. Decreased surface area to volume ratio of reactants
In the end region, students need to take note of when to start drawing the plateau (the point need not be exact, just need to show whether it is earlier/later than the previous curve), it also has to indicate the amount of products formed (whether it changed or remained the same)
Note that the rate of reaction is dependent on the limiting reactant.
Enjoy the step-by-step learning with Mr Chua!
