A larger sprocket in front can give your bike "longer legs" for increased range, better fuel economy, and increased top-end speed. A smaller (less toothed) sprocket will make your bike crawl up anything and everything you throw it at.

Do DRZs often get oil seal leaks? I can't tell whether my countershaft is leaking oil or if it's just a buildup of chain lube that I put on there but didn't get to wear in because of the carb issues.
@outlaw_overdrive
@outlaw_overdrive 10 лет назад
Thumpertalk recommends putting some locktite or other anaerobic sealer on the splines of the shaft to reduce backlash (play) in the sprocket. the play supposedly causes the bushing to wear which apparently can F*** S*** up. The service manual recommends 79.5ft/lbs of torque to hold the nut on the counter shaft. Remember knowing is half the battle.
@Sum4Seb
@Sum4Seb 10 лет назад
My DR650 front sprocket has the same design and still wiggles loosely doesn't matter how tight you try to make it. Follow manufacturers spec and there won't be an issue. There has been a modification to the torque spec as of 2012 they went from 79.5 ft/lb to 105 ft/lb. It's in the owners manual as of 2012. either or the sprocket wont be going anywhere and won't do any damage to the splines on the shaft. Until next time, Ride safe :)

i really enjoy my 15t front sproket, i also have the 47 rear for offroad use and a 44 for onroad use, what are you using for the rear? i saw that the 14t stock sprocket was way too low, i would be in 3rd gear before the end of an intersection

MrDuhfactor what do you say about the tightness of the bolt over the sprocket? It seemed pretty loose and you know what you're doing. It never came off, and the retainer plate kept it on there fine. I ask you, oh mechanical guru, because now the bike is making funky clickity clack sounds.

Gamer guilder It ended up being that little clip thing that spaces the cover from the case. I actually just left the cover off for the last few rides... and depending on how much I like the 15t sprocket I might just keep it off.

@ColoradoDualSport
@ColoradoDualSport 10 лет назад
I was thinking the same thing. That nut (not eveRide, the metal one) is probably very important.
@SovaKlr
@SovaKlr 10 лет назад
ColoradoDualSport on the drz there is that plate behind holding the seal in so it may not be as big a deal as on other bikes... but the spec is 80 ft/lb. There really is no mechanical reason for the bolt to try to back off with the washer folded over. There may be some other engineering reason for it to be tighter. IIRC duhfactor was having a duh factor moment when it came time to put that front sprocket on so maybe he forgot to tighten it or maybe he just prefers it that way.
@eveRide
@eveRide 10 лет назад
SOVA Rides that's good information. 80 ft/lb seems like a crap-ton on there, though. I worry about the sprocket mashing against the plate at that pressure, but if it's legit then I need to fix it. That area down there is making a funky sound, now... like a clicking when I come to a stop in neutral. This could possibly be the worst how-to video out there. Typical everide stuff :)

eveRide I just looked it up really fast and didn't even pay attention to year model. (and it was 79.5 which is odd by itself) I think the KLR is 96 (going from memory, might be wrong). But for the most part, sit on the bike, put your foot on the brake, and push as hard as you can on a decent wrench one good time and call it a day if you want it tight.

yeah there's something wrong with you.. good to see you in a good mood though. Can't wait for the day when you start teaching yourself how to flat track it around corners. aka crank the throttle, pitch the back end around and slide it through the corner.. don't know if your higher gearing will work with that though. wheel speed is key in doing stuff like that. now if you'll excuse me I need to go watch some old Fast Fridays Speedway racing to fulfill my flat track needs that just awoke with that comment.

My Ninja 650 had the sprocket secured with the single nut like your DRZ does, but my DR650 actually has a sprocket retainer with three smaller bolts running through it. I'm a little curious what the pros/cons are to those two different types that made Suzuki change up like that. Side note, on my Ninja, that nut was so tight, I had to use a breaker bar on my largest socket wrench and immobilize the rear tire with a solid steel pipe. Definitely check those torque specs as it might have loosened up a bit with heavy use. When you're putting on a new front sprocket, what I've found helps a lot is to slip the chain over the sprocket before putting the sprocket on the shaft. I wrestled with mine for a while before figuring that one out.

My DR350 doesn't have a nut to hold the sprocket, it's a clip ring that needs a special set of pliers. But there is some play so I think that you have the metal bent over the nut, it wouldn't have to be that tight.

There should be a torque setting in the manual, but I hardly ever use my torque wrench, as it usually doesn't fit. However to tighten your front sprocket they do make sprocket tools that allow you to put counter tension on the drive shaft so you can tighten the sprocket nut. The tool isn't really necessary, like a lot of special tools, just makes the job easier. You really just need to make sure it is on there good. I'm positive that MrDuhfactor tightened that sucker good, but as with any part on and off road bike, nuts and bolts loosen with riding and all the abuse we put our bikes through! I found so many loose nuts and bolts during the Moab trip and took some time each day after riding to look over the bike and inspect for loose hardware. Finger dancing and riding over hazardous waste FTW!! "Happy... Broccoli!" lol super cute! Good stuff man! I wish all tutorials were as entertaining!!

Haha thanks Ness! Yeah I've gotta get back in there and I'll probably be throwing the 14t back on. The 15t was nice for the Torroweap distance, but it actually didn't improve gas mileage/range that much, and with the way I usually ride, I do like the low end grunt.

Actually the Suzuki DRZ400E Factory Manual has numerous errors, the worst of which is specifying 26Nm torque for the 6 Allen head bolts that hold the rotating magneto on. It’s a misprint, it should be 16Nm, and many people have sheared the heads off those Allen head bolts trying to get to 26Nm.

@slimjim7411
@slimjim7411 5 лет назад
@@eveRide That's because the gearing change decreases rpm's but increases load on the motor. So you're using nearly the same amount of gas to turn lower rpms but go the same speed as before. In short if you're looking for more top speed changing the gears is a option unless it's to the point the motor simply cannot reach redline due to resistance. Basically at any given RPM's it takes a certain amount of energy to move the bike and the rider forward through the wind at 70mph. Changing the gearing affects the rpm's at that speed, but not the energy needed. It's no different than lugging up a hill in 2nd gear instead of winding out 1st gear.
