In this video Salvatore Vinciguerra travels to the Oak Alley Plantation in Vacherie, Louisiana. The Oak Alley Plantation has over 200 years of history. It is one of only 20 Plantation homes open to the public along the Mississippi River. The Oak Alley Plantation is about an hour from New Orleans, Louisiana and is a great day trip if you are staying in the Big Easy. The plantation does have a restaurant and overnight cottages for visitors who would like to stay overnight.
Salvatore first shares with you the slave quarters which includes replicas of some of the homes African Americans lived in during the time of slavery. The interpretive center does a great job in helping visitors understand about slavery in the United States. The exhibit includes a database of those that were enslaved on the plantation and several artifacts and reproductions from the era. Please check out the Oak Alley Plantation website below as it contains several articles on the topic.
Then, Salvatore shares with you the history of the Oak Alley plantation and how it was used to produce sugar cane. This virtual tour also includes a brief history of the home and a tour and history of the gardens on the plantation. Salvatore even walks along the levee located on the Mississippi River to give you a better perspective as to the importance of the mighty river and how it helped the plantation become successful by exporting the sugar cane.
Don't forget that if you would like a tour of the "Big House" then you will need to purchase tickets in advance to tour the home.
