I convinced my mom to take me and my friends to watch this and told her it was comic movie which was rare for the time. Our favorite part is the opening rave and she nearly threw up in the theater. She never forgave me for that one haha
Donal Logue giggling, “I’m gonna be naughty…I’m gonna be a naughty vampire God!” And also one of the last lines, “Some m.f.ers are always tryin to ice skate uphill.”
@LifeisANovel yeah for sure I just look at it as started, blade is the second released ever live action not animated marvel film sure the first one kinda bombed but I'd still consider blade the first marvel movie or the started I know alot of people say saved though
that blood rave party in the beginning is one of the most legendary moments of cinema 🤣 I adore Blade movies watched them growing up tones of times funny thing is this was before big Marvel era I never really realized these movies are Marvel or based on comics until about few years ago lol
@@rachaelhogan7850they were busy feeling it with cheesy one liners as much as I love Ryan I hate they used a blade movie to introduce him for Deadpool.
The plant that was in Blades room was a rare hybrid of 2 species that shouldn't go together. Kind of like a vampire and a human. By cutting the roots, he is basically saying that he accepts who he is.
Just to add to your comment, I looked it up because I was curious as well and it says " He cuts the roots of this symbolic totem to show his independence from the people who made him and raised him-- His adoptive father, his mother, and the vampire that bit her.
@Jerralyng49 yeah it's called shini mono gurui. The hour of death fury. A samurai facing a battle he won't come back from destroys the things he cares about so he has no distractions. Samurai would kill their wives and kids so they wouldn't be sold into slavery or tortured to death by the enemy,
@@celeste1737 thats not true. blade did nothing economically for marvel (they didnt own the rights) or marketing wise (half the people didnt even know it was based on a comic) if anything it gave the idea of "hey if we take it seriously we might make money" and dc had already proven that. and sony and fox after with spidey and xmen also stan lee, tho i love the guy, is the hulk hogan of comic books. so.................yeah
Snipes has been training in martial arts since age twelve, earning a high ranking 5th dan black belt in Shotokan Karate. He has also trained as a student of Capoeira under Mestre Jelon Vieira and in a number of other disciplines including various styles of kung fu and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Oak, Quinn, and Answer are viewing the Blade film from a realistic standpoint, but you guys have to remember that this film was very closely based on the comic books and not meant to embody reality. Once you take that into consideration, you never notice how implausible certain situations are. 💕
I really wish people knew more about the Legacy this film carries. From Wesley Snipes originally being attached to a Black Panther Project before transitioning to this film,to the Depiction of Blade's look in the Official Marvel Comics forever being associated and based off of his Look in the films which I don't think has been done with any other Superhero,to the Original ending being rejected by Test Audiences because it devolved into a CGI blood Tornado when all the Audience really wanted was to see Blade fight Frost. I swear the Blood Rave is one of the most underrated sequences in any Comic Book film and if not for Blade,Marvel not only wouldve went Bankrupt but they wouldn't have had the the confidence to do More Marvel Films that eventually would be the Xmen/Spiderman and the MCU as we know it. Rumor is that Wesley Snipes is being Contacted to appear as Blade in the upcoming Secret Wars and I'm so excited. As a black Kid before Black Panther was a household name, the most Popular Black Superhero of the 2000s has to have been Blade. I swear when that Music Drop hits when Blade catches his Shades.....absolute Cinema. I also really like this depiction of Vampires in this universe. Far removed from the Dracula depictions of old, this New depiction of Vampires reminds me of Teens or new generations that clash with the standards of the Previous. These vampires want to rule the world rather than make peace with Humans and Influence things from the Shadows.
FUN FACT: Jet Li was offered the role of Deacon Frost as it was set to make his American film debut. Li opted for Lethal Weapon 4 instead and New Line went with Stephen Dorff
I found it sobering that the Mummy franchise fell apart after Rachel Weisz left with the Chinese actors carrying the film - Both Jet and Michelle were the real stars while the old guard became comedic interpretations of whatever they were.
@@terrylandess6072 Hollywood always treat it's co-stars like second rate commodities. Like they're expendable. Even with the Lion King live action remake, they didn't even call Jeremy Irons to reprise Scar. I think they underestimated the importance of one of the great antagonist characters of all time just because we couldn't see his face but the voice alone is important enough to the character and the story. Which is why they obviously had to bring back a 90 year old James Earl Jones because who the hell else is gonna play Mufasa lol
Another fun fact: David Fincher was originally set to direct this film, that would've been amazing, his visual style would've been great for this, just like GDT's visuals did wonders for the Blade II. Wesley Snipes vs. Jet Li both in their prime fighting in a Marvel movie could've been all kinds of epic, holy shit lol. Also, Stan Lee was supposed to cameo as one of the cops that arrives when Blade is in the club fighting, he notices Quinn on fire & tells the other cops, then the main guy tells them to put him out. That cameo was filmed but for some reason was removed from the finished film. That would've been the first or second Marvel cameo for Stan too. Shame it never happened. RIP Stan Lee
Wesley Snipes was the epitome of badass in the 90s. Not to mention he actually was a very rounded actor altogether. Thank you for mentioning best of the best it's still one of my favorite martial arts films
The thing I love the most about this movie is how Deacon Frost just looks like Some Guy for 90% of the movie. We really don't get a lot of vampire overlords that rock the Stressed Out IT Dude aesthetic these days.
When we see him in 'The Immortals' with Henry Cavill, years later - his look has NOT changed one bit - nor his acting. :P Stressed out IT dude wearing a toga.
@@terrylandess6072 Stephen Dorff sure is a dude. He was in the video for Limp Bizkit's 'Rolling' with Ben Stiller. Also, he was great in American Hero.
His look is so nostalgic in this film. Very late 90s chic. The oversized suit jacket and shirt that goes past the wrist. I LOVED that look on men back then. Lol.
The flower, if i remember right was a buddhist zen thing. Cutting the roots was a "I'm not turning back" type deal. It's all or nothing. The plant either dies or becomes a new thing all together.
I love that there is still a lot of cinematic storytelling in this. Like when Whistler tells her to shoot herself which is better than the alternative (becoming vampire) as the camera pans to 'THE alternative' - Blade.
There was this little thing called the digital age which birthed the internet happening. Lot's of distractions ever since, compared to 4 TV channels and a couple Cable companies can do that.
I used to think that too, but then, I've never seen Godfather, Good fellas, Shawshank, Green Mile and so many more classic movies. I'm 37 and consider myself a movie nut
30:00 This scene always get me. The security dude begs for mercy then we see that quick flash of Blade remembering Whistler and it's clear: there will be no mercy shown today. Underneath the brutality of the scene we see just how much Blade loved Whistler and how much his death hurt. A quick but powerful moment.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Welcome to the real beginning of the MCU. Without this movie, there never would have been the whole 'comic book' movie trend that began in the early 00's...
Stan Lee was one of the cops that enters at the end of the bloodbath night club scene when Quinn was on fire. Not knowing what would happen in the future they stupidly removed his cameo from the final cut.
In Bushido you raise a bonsai plant but cut its roots if you don't think you're coming back from the battle to care for it. Also Blade cuts the roots of the plant to symbolize cutting the route from his vampire origins. - DVD extra
My sister and I used to watch this movie so much as kids! We would practice the fight scenes and play fight! We really thought we were gonna be in the next Blade movie. 😂
If I recalled correctly, when Blade said: “Motherfucker! Are you out of your damn mind?!” upon being shot, that line was not in the original script and it was improvised out of genuine anger because they shot him with real bullets. They were not supposed to be live rounds. Kind of similar to what happened with Brandon when they were filming The Crow a few years before Blade. Also, in the original comics, Blade was not a half vampire. He was a normal human who was a vampire hunter. He was later turned into a “Daywalker” by Morbius. It was around afterwards when the first Blade film was released that they reconned Blade’s backstory and turned him into a half-vampire.
Man, Frost was probably my first "grown up crush" as a young teen in the 90s. 😂 I always wish Stephen Dorff's career had taken off a bit more after this.
Yeeeees! The marvel OG! Was and still am a die hard fan of Blade 😂❤ This is one of the best vampire series everrrrrrr!!!! AND NO ONE CAN REPLACE WESLEY SNIPES FOR ME 😭😭😭
In the original script the fat vampire pearl was supposed to be seen with a room of dead children next to him but they felt it was to dark and scraped it before production.
I do like that Frost actually liked Quinn. That was his boy, he was kind of an idiot, but they were actually friends. He didn't treat him like he was disposable. If you're gonna live forever you need your ride or dies more than ever.
GASSSSSSPPP. We"ee watching Blade saga!!!!! Side note •• Snipes was so fast with his martial arts. The director had to ask him to slow it down because the camera had a hard time tracking Him and keep it him in focus......bad mofo badge earned 😍 As someone who trains bjj...that's amazing
And in this universe, there is beef between the two classes of vampires. The “Pure Bloods” and the “Turned Bloods” as they’re called. The pure bloods were born vampires while the turned bloods are vampires who were turned. Pure bloods do not have visual marks or wounds to show while the turned bloods have such wounds when they were bitten. In the case of pure bloods, it seems to be rare cases due to the risk involved in the womb.
I can remember when I went to the cinema to watch this when it came out, really love these movies, but when you reminded me it was in 1998, it felt like a blade to my heart.
This movie came out when I was very young but my mom let me watch because Wesley is my cousin. The next year started my comic journey because I wanted books but I still wasn’t allowed to read Blade comics so my uncle, opted to start me on Spider-Man, X-Men and Captain America. Blade didn’t give me nightmares but the next year The Mummy did 😂
When you said the Best of the Best movie, bro I almost came to tears instantly haven’t thought about that movie since I was a kid and it rocked my world because when I was a kid, I was into martial arts and all that good stuff and that movie was the first movie like I remember, crying too as a young boy lol .Deep cut. I will look it up today. I might have to watch it as an adult.
Glad to see you all enjoyed this movie. (I miss the 90’s). To address some of your questions, just watch the 2nd and 3rd movies. BUT, also look for “Blade: The Series”, only a couple seasons, but it gives more context into the conflict between “Pure Bloods and Turned”, “…the organization” Blade/Whistler mentions, and “…back alley treaties with the humans” Frost mentioned. Also, recommend the movie “Daybreakers” which is if vampire Openly rule the world. And I know you’re watching TVD, but, I would recommend the spin off “The Originals”, which is adult based, not “high school” centered.
@BaddMedicine I could see that if u think of them as vampire movies not being for everyone so maybe just not on their radar, but I dug them mainly for all the awesome action/ fight stunts. Hopefully guys will watch 2 & 3 now since they seem to like. Lots of great supporting actors ( if u know u know 😊) & fights. Yall are watching some really great stuff lately. Just wanna say thanks again for putting in so much hard work to post stuff almost daily. That cannot be easy, kudos to u❤💞❤️
Disney/ MCU wishes they could make a blade film this good🤣🤣 it's taking them like 15 years by this point and they still don't know what they're doing lol
Let us now praise Donal Logue! I've loved that guy for 30 years now, from his days as "the cabdriver" in MTV promo spots. Also, N'Bushe Wright is soooo good as Karen. In fact, this whole cast is awesome!
28:42 That plant is a rare ingredient needed for Blade's serum. Whistler and Blade knew how to make it. By destroying the plant, Blade is giving himself no choice but to succeed in saving Karen, who knows about him and can create something better than the serum that is slowly losing it's effectiveness. If he fails, he will give in to his thirst and go back to killing for blood. Motivation to succeed on top of his rage at Whistler's death.
If there ever was a time an actor should've been brought back to reprise a role, it's this. I'm usually against changing a character's origins, but making blade half vampire and half human who still ages like a human was brilliant. For me, Arnold is The Terminator, Peter Weller is Robocop, And Wesley Snipes is Blade. We'll have to wait and see if the reboot actually honors the character's legacy, I sincerely hope so.
Blade is a clear 5 movie for me, just because its a damn cool cult movie from the 90s. Back in the day this movie was just fantastic, Wesley the coolest Vampire ever and the blood bath scene is pure cinema and music history. I still have the song here on my playlist today. Greets from a nerdy Vampire loving girl here from Germany
Good watch the plant is Ersatz hybrid ( Dracaena roots), when he cut the roots off the plant it was him cutting the hybrid in two... Very rare plant 🌍🫡💯
Since I didn't hear him mentioned shout out to Marvel veteran actor Tim Guinee who plays Curtis, the doctor who gets bitten and turned into a zombie. He's not just in this, but also the first two Iron Man movies as well as the Punisher tv series. And since we're on the subject of vampires with this movie he was also one of the leads in John Carpenter's Vampires, which actually released a couple of months after Blade.
I think the flower is supposed to represent Blade’s attachment to his vampire roots while being a hybrid, so he cuts them to show his independence from them.
Blade is a hybrid half human and half vampire, he has all the strengths of vampires but he does not have their weaknesses but since he is human he does not want to kill humans that is why he does not drink blood and that is why he uses that serum from this movie it is a triology guys I hope you like it very good
Absolutely one of my favorite vampire movies. I have to say though- Blade 2 is above this one for me. 😊 Fun fact: I used to know the guy with black hair who wheels in the burned body to the morgue. His name is Clint- he lived in my city before heading to LA to make it big. He never did much but was still cool the first time I spotted him here!
This unique thing about this movie is that it earned so much revenue at the premiere that it saved Marvel's comics from bankruptcy and it even gave enough money for Marvel's to start making more movies that lead up to AVENGERS
The DJ who made operation blade (The song at the start) was Mallorca Lee who died of cancer recently. He had never been paid for using that song in the movie.
Had to come back with this gift & say that I keep watching this over over, 1 of my favourite reaction videos! & just lurve Quinn & Answer's dancing hehe & perfectly edited by Dave too! Just all around great stuff! 😁❤
THIS WILL BE FUN ! BLADE IS CLASSIC! My first time watching was after having my first baby alone in the dark, and my husband was asleep on the couch. That was not a good idea! LOL
This was the first rated R movie I ever saw, I was 7 years old when my older cousin showed it to me, and it absolutely *blew* my mind lol. I fell in love, the fights and the overall sheer coolness of it all hit me like a freight train, and I've loved this movie ever since
