What I think is a bracket fungi I have found on locust trees. I get the living ones not so deteriorated as those you have and let dry really well [the brown inner part]. I have had luck with solar, ferro rod and make great char. I have also with difficulty used successfully as bow drill fire board. They break easily but can make a quick ember especially with yucca drill.

Excellent! I’m going to give this a try. As usual, you’ve got me thinking… I’ll try fire rolling the parasitic chaga fungus found on the birch tree. It’s what I look for here in the mountains of northern New York since it’s one of the precious few raw natural materials that will take a spark from flint & steel. I can’t believe I’ve never tried fire rolling it… yet! And if you can get your hands on some chaga down there, it would make a great video!

If you char it it should be good for flint and steel.
