I think you’ll find that Bowie and Lennon did in fact lift ideas from their contemporaries like Chuck Berry or Lou Reed. Everyone steals, it’s called having a frame of reference. Everyone is influenced by their predecessors imitation is a part of human nature. This particular song was based off of Shine A Light by the Rolling Stones and sounds almost nothing like it. The Rolling Stones themselves were imitators of their blues heroes such as Robert Johnson or Leadbelly. This is how music progresses, by following the previous example.
