Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants is Oasis' fourth album, and one of their most unique and underrated. Join me to learn the story of how the album was made by a songwriter and a band in crisis.
Many images and videos in my RU-vid content have been found online without any attribution or credit available. In many cases I have therefore not been able to add a credit in the videos themselves due to lack of information. If your image or video has been used and a credit is required, please email me with your details and evidence of authorship and a credit will be added into the video description.
Many thanks, JH.

Liam would probably never admit it, but Noel leaving in 2009 was probably the best thing that happened to him. Because Liam no longer had the protection of his big brother. He had to do all the press tours, interviews, award shows, etc by himself. Back then Noel used to do all these and Liam just partied around. And Liam himself admitted that he became much more disciplined during his solo career than he ever was in Oasis. He knows if he does not show up to a gig now, Noel is not there to rescue him.

@chimpsofthefuture6046 not really. Liam in his solo tours sings 60% Oasis songs. Guess who wrote those songs? Noel. Who instrumented those songs? Noel. If anything its Liam who needs Noel more because Noel is exponentially better as a songwriter Noel actually does not need Liam. SotSoG is an album that sounds much better today than it did on release. One of the problems was that every time Oasis released an album post Be Here Now everybody just wanted another Definitely Maybe or What's the story and people just weren't ready for a new sound. Oasis had so many good songs during their second phase but get overlooked because they wasnt as meaningful as the 90s. Noel got older and became a different kind of songwriter and is showing even more in his solo work how versatile he is.

I've always had a soft spot for this album. It came out when I was just entering my teens, so I remember the singles being all over the radio and it takes me back to happier times. The formula definitely needed updating after BHN and, at the time, I thought this album had a current sound that slotted in with what else was going on in UK music at the time. It had a drum sound that gave it some of the drum and bass/garage flavour that was exploding in the UK at the time. I still think Go Let It Out is one of their best singles and is often overlooked when discussing their all time classics.

I don't think the word "mature" is ever a good thing in relation to rock n roll. "Go Let It Our" is terrible. They hang on that A chord forever because they know they have nowhere to go. "Who Feels Love" has a vibe but no song whatsoever. "Put Yer Money Where Yer Mouth Is" is a completely half-baked, unfinished idea. "Little James" is an obvious "Hey Jude" ripoff but it totally sucks. "Gas Panic!" has a good vibe and sound but, again, the song sucks. "Where Did It All Go Wrong?" is pretty and depressing...it's almost a county song. "Sunday Morning Call" is dreary and awful. "I Can See A Liar" has a decent sound and would've been better if they actually spent time on this album. "Roll It Over" is decent but, again, by this point the whole "comedown" thing has been beaten to death. "Fuckin In The Bushes" is the best thing on this record.

Replace "Sunday Morning Call" with "Cigarettes in Hell" or "One Way Road" and you've got gold. I also do consider "Let's All Make Believe" as something of a "credits" track to the album. "Little James" is too sincere and vulnerable as a track to really remove it. This album is an Oasis great and I'm tired of people pretending like it isn't.

This album is actually one of my top 5 Oasis albums, involving the Masterplan compilation. There's a lot of very underappreciated gems on here and I am one of the fans who loves Little James, yet it was a light and bubbly sweet one while most of the album was dark and as personally deep for Noel. That b-side version of Helter Skelter is painful to me. They take one of the most energised Beatles tracks and turn into a one-note dirge with zero spirit. The live version on Familiar To Millions, with the Oasis 2.0 line-up is so much better in every way - though it’s still not as good as the original. But their version of My Generation is chef’s kiss

This album has great production, lyrics, textures and playing parts compared to Be Here Now. The opening, Fuckin In The Bushes, was like something we had never heard Oasis sound like before. Likewise with Gas Panic using Trip Hop beats and layers of spacey effects with the use of flutes and organs etc. Even the weaker songs like Put Your Money, Who Feels Love and Little James.. had great atmosphere. The album also contains some gems like Go Let It Out, Where Did It All Go Wrong and Roll It Over. I just never liked Sunday Morning Call. Having two Noel sung songs in a row was a mistake. Replace Sunday.. with Let's All Make Believe and stick a Liam-sung Full On in there and the album would've been much stronger.

I was 18 when Standing on the Shoulder of Giants came out. I remember hearing it for the first time and feeling like it was the ultimate coda to everything the 90's were. We all rode such a high in that time, and nu metal along with boy bands became the thing in America. Even Green Day had fallen off, and rock music in America had shifted so far away from when Don't Look Back in Anger and Champagne Supernova were dominating MTV. I loved the record, and looking back now, Let's All Make Believe and Roll It Over really tells the story that the innocence and pure energy we all felt between 1991 through 1998 were truly gone. As a Canadian, I find _Standing on the Shoulder of Giants_ to be more significant than people might realize for two reasons: "Go Let It Out" became Oasis's first chart-topping hit here, and "Put Yer Money Where Yer Mouth Is" became the opening song of the hit television show _Dragons' Den_ several years after the album's release. While I never hear "Go Let It Out" or Oasis's other Canadian chart-topper "The Hindu Times" on Canadian radio stations anymore, I have to wonder if Oasis would've had the lasting popularity here that they've had without _Giants_ to solidify their legacy.
@RacingWorldTV202

I think Giants solidified that they were more than just "that band in the 90s who did Wonderwall and flamed out because of course they did." Giants was a therapy played out on a world stage and HC was the recharge they needed and DBTT was getting comfortable with things again and solidifying their status. It's really a shame DOYS went down in nuclear flames because there was potential with that. Looking at how HFB1 went, and the best of DGSS, I think the album after that would've been really cool. Maybe not a worldbeater but I think it would've solidified their status as the indie darling they kinda became while they were broken up

@@RacingWorldTV202I believe Noel himself said that many songs were never completed for DOYS because Liam left the recording sessions early without telling anyone. And because he went back to the UK (they were recording in America), the album was completed using demos and using whatever they could, like putting things together just to make it seem like a complete song. He said a couple of years ago on a Q&A that about half of the songs on the High Flying Birds debut album were definitely going to be used for Oasis follow up to DOYS. Funnily enough, he even mentioned in the past that some of the songs on DGSS would have never been used for an Oasis album and it was kind of a tragedy that they (Beady Eye) released them. But he also said that some of them would have been used for it.

But the oasis sound, the full on guitars, the arrogance, the passion was gone. It was quite depressing at the time. The party was over. Now I appreciate some of the songs like gas panic or roll it over more than I did at the time. But still... I will always remember the come down and not meeting any of my expectations. Since then every oasis album was presented as a return to form... But the magic was long gone. Forever. 😢 Some pretty good songs in the rest of the albums, but never again a great great Oasis album. This is a great channel. I don't normally post comments because there is not much to say about Oasis that hasn't already been said but coincidentally I have been thinking about this album for a while now. I revisited it a couple of years ago and have been listening to it regularly since then. I always thought Heathen Chemistry was the strongest post 2000s record they did because it was the one that sounded most like Oasis but I was wrong, its definitely SOTSOG. For me personally PYMWYMI is a bit of stomper and the arrangement on Little James makes it a good track in the context of where it sits on the album. I agree with most that I Can See a Liar is disappointing. However, if you add Lets All Make Believe, Getting Older and the version of Solve My Mystery/Revolution Song (not the over-polished version from years later) from the SOTSOG sessions then you have arguably got the most interesting Oasis album of the lot. It would have been one of the greatest albums ever if they also had the version of Let There Be Love from DBTT, but unfortunately in 2000 it hadn't morphed from the acoustic demo with an earlier version of the lyrics. For anyone interested in the SOTSOG sessions, have a look at the 3cd SOTSOG Demos on youtube. Highly recommended!

So much so that I had to leave a comment and I've only made about 4 of them in the last 10 years. I don't understand, whats not to like? Liam sounds great on it, the music is fantastic. No one cares about the lyrics so that point is irrelevant. I think your all mental and need to revisit those tracks again. I'm telling you do yourself a favour and crank the both of them - they have aged very well. As a matter of fact the only song I would probably rank above those 2 on this album is Go Let It Out, which is easily one of the best songs in all of the 90's by any band period. I think the one of the main reasons for leaving "Put yer money...", and "I can see a Liar" on the album was to shake up the vibe a bit, otherwise it would be a completely down-tempo record, not mentioning the idea of including "Let's All Make Believe" in the setlist.

I don't know why but on my way to work this morning I was thinking about how you said you think the reason Oasis fatigue kicked in was because there was too long of a break between BHN and SOTSOG. I decided I didn't agree entirely because Green Day were away for years and came back with American Idiot which is one of the greatest punk rock albums of all time. Oasis just needed a better album that SOTSOG. And then you upload this! Weird. Thanks as always!

I found oasis in 1994 and was the first best band that stood up with the best. As an American in the 1990's going to parties I took a lot of shit for being an American fan from the others. There's a lot of good rock music out here me included, you're right the powers that be are blocking our music and message from getting out there. You're very good James and that Tom Meighan is great. Check out my songs, I'm from Boston, Mass.

I love this album. Some of the songs are incredible. Go Let It Out is a great opener. But to me the crown jewels of this album are Gas Panic!, Where Did It All Go Wrong?, Roll It Over and the bonus track Lets All Make Believe. The vocal performances in those songs are haunting to say the least. I love Where Did It All Go Wrong? and I think Noel should bring it back for his live-sets for the High Flying Birds along with Falling Down.

I do like I Can See A Liar. I would've left "Money" out for "Let's All Make Believe" which could have easily been a single. But I'll jump in defense of Liar any day. There are dumber lyrics in BHN or even classic Oasis tunes. Great video! "Standing" was my go to Oasis album for a while. It holds a special place in my heart.
@TedGrubersky

I’ve said it a few times, brilliant album but just let down by it only being 10 songs and three of those being well below standard for Oasis, and would have been better as bsides. The bsides available from the album’s singles could have been better options on the album. Saying that, if Noel re-wrote some lyrics for both ‘Put Yer Money’ and ‘I Can See A Liar’ and perhaps added some louder drums to the latter and a bass groove to both - they’d be really great. ‘Little James’ was just wishy washy but a lovely melody - would have been best served as a secret track, maybe So, my version of SOTSOG revisited, knowing what could have been used, and with a bit of a re-master, slight re-write of some lyrics and give Liam the lead vocals to many of the songs, something to really kick down the doors of the new Millennium, is this: 1 In The Bushes 2 Go Let It Out 3 Who Feels Love 4 Put Yer Money Where Yer Mouth Is (re-worked) 5 Carry Us All (Liam & Noel both on lead vocals) 6 Gas Panic 7 Let’s All Make Believe 8 Where Did It All Go Wrong? 9 Full On (Liam vocals) 10 Sunday Morning Call (remixed, rockier and dancier with Liam singing verses, Noel staying on chorus) 11 I Can See A Liar (re-worked) 12 Roll It Over And with that, how it sounds in my head, we probably have the album of the year for 2000. Colossus indeed!

Great album. The band actually tried to evolve their sound and try new stuff with electronica and samples. Bar two weaker songs, it's a great album. Shame it didn't translate commercially and shame the band haven't given it a anniversary re-issue with a docu and extra tracks for fans.

Great video James! I was lucky enough to see Oasis live quite a few times and I can tell you, the whole vibe changed from the 90s to 2000s. The shift felt deeper than just a change in band members or musical style. At the time, I thought it was because I went from being a starry-eyed kid in the 90s to a young adult in the 00s. Turns out the band was going through a metamorphosis. Interesting stuff. BTW, Let's All Make Believe should have been an album track!
