@@Raindropsundropgumdrop Nothing even all that exciting. I was 22ish and had gotten mono, but my doctors wouldn’t believe me. I maintained a 103 fever, my throat was infected and I lost 15% of my body weight. They refused to send me to the ER or an ENT, and no antibiotics they prescribed would work, so my tonsils went necrotic, turned grey, and started to slough off. I was in such bad shape by the time I saw the last doctor at the practice two weeks later, that she was asking me if I had AIDS, had traveled to a 3rd world country, or handled exotic animals. Apparently she was amused that I came in all “young” and “pleasant” and “pretty”, and then when I opened my mouth it smelled liked a rotting corpse from the raging infection/dead flesh. So she told her family about it….then me. I can’t blame her though, she sent me to the ENT, and some med student helped me at my follow-up appointment. When he opened my chart he looked up all wide eyed and said “oh my god, you’re the one!!!”. So apparently I was the talk of their office too. Hopefully it was a lesson in how not to treat a patient, or how “young pretty pleasant” patients are capable of accurately reporting serious illness even better than ugly old men.

The reason birth control pills for men aren’t approved by the FDA even if they have the same or less symptoms is really stupid, but kind of interesting. To determine if a drug is approved, the risks of taking the drug are compared to the risks of not taking the drugs on the user. With women it was determined that the side effects outweigh the risk of pregnancy. But since men can’t get pregnant, there is no risk of not taking the drug, so drugs even with little side effects don’t get approved.

Lot of room temp IQ (in celsius) women talk shit about all the side effects of their pill and how men are pussies for not having their own version of it but let me tell you that most women who are on it would rather take the slight chance of getting fucked by the universe than deal with whatever shit they're being dealt without the pills. As for men, birth control exists and it's called Condoms and getting a Vasectomy.

I'm glad you said this as it made me curious enough to look into the topic. I also saw there are at least two gel-based contraceptives being tested right now, with at least one having very positive preliminary results. I hope that we see reliable, safe male contraceptives available to the public within the next twenty years: I'm feeling very optimistic!

There's been numerous of attempts at male birth controls however, it's never pass clinical trials as males have complained about the symptoms they experienced from. Keep in mind that these symptoms are the exact ones women birth control has as well 🤷‍♀️

@@lilyrose0116 In at least the ones I've read about, the common side effects were really a lot worse. It wasn't reported well in general media. What we should be talking more about is men who know they're not about to have kids/more kids getting vasectomies.

@@Suzanne4415 From all the studies I've looked at in the past decade during my time in grad school, the side effects were no worse than women's. Hormonal medications will all have similar side effects because of the physiological mechanisms so there isn't much way around the long list of side effects. Women just has more risks to benefits when it comes to pregnancy & birth control. I definitely agree that vasectomy should be something to push forward for male birth control, especially since there are now a reversible procedure & a permanent procedure

When I was looking this topic up earlier, the most concise info I could find was an NPR article from last year, "In the hunt for a male contraceptive, scientists look to stop sperm in their tracks" which cites those studies having serious side effects, "including toxicity for the heart, liver and kidney, and a potential increased risk of prostate cancer." On a more positive note, that article also cites new gel-based contraceptives studies from the 2010s which at least claim to have good initial success with no impact to the kidneys or liver and "some participants report weight gain, changes in libido, acne, or mood swings." I looked further into that particular drug, NES/T, and as of last year they're claiming: "The efficacy rate appears better than ‘the pill’ and, so far, seems on par with long-acting reversible contraceptives for women."

No logic was thought throughout any single part of that story 😂

Yeah I remember discussing it in statistics class and there was a couple at my table, the guy looked at the list of side effects and said something like "well yeah of course that's unreasonable" and his gf gave a 10 minute breakdown of all the same side effects for women and others that weren't included. He looked horrified and ended up apologizing. The side effects for women not being discussed openly is also an issue. That said if I remember correctly the reason it wasn't approved is that they look at the effects of taking it vs effects of not taking it and for women they count pregnancy (obviously more dangerous and with a lot more negative side effects) as the "effects of not taking it" while for men the effects of not taking it were nothing. Obviously an issue that only the men's own physical comfort were taken into account and not their partners but for most medications others aren't affected so that's the process.

​@@ShannonCR Yeah and it's frankly quite criminal they don't consider social impact for men when assessing medication risks. It's screwed up as heck they think that the risk of "getting your sexual partner killed or jailed via unwanted pregnancy" is NOT a major mental health risk for men. The people evaluating meds need aomw urgent feminism and some urgent lesson in real life impacts of meds or lack of meds!

And the risk benefit analysis compares the side effects to the effects of not taking it. Which in men (medically) is absolutely nothing, where in women you have to compare the side effects of birth control to pregnancy and delivery, which does come with substantial risk.

There have actually been several methods on the horizon including a pill with no/minimal side effects and an injection into the vas deferens that acts like a reversible vasectomy. The problem, like you mentioned is that men are apprehensive to mess with their hormones the way women have, and other methods are long term, so a lot of pharmaceutical companies don't want to bother since it isn't as profitable. The male contraceptive initiative site has been chronicling this.

A nurse once told me about an ER patient she'll never forget. A woman came in with abdominal pain and vaginal discharge. She couldn't think of anything that could be causing it, she said. So they ordered scans done. She had a fork in her hoohaw. It had been there for at least 2 weeks, but she wasn't sure exactly how long. She'd had an itch and decided a fork would work great, then apparently forgot all about it. The fork caused a bunch of abrasions that became infected, hence the pain and discharge. In case you needed some competition for wildest story.

Actually the side effects to the pills for male birth control are the same as female birth control, they just don’t want to buy it because of the side effects, yet a lot of women are expected to because of this fallacy that gets spread around. I appreciate this, but two follow up questions. Do you have qualifications on this? And I hope probabilities play a role? I did a first level review on a procedure a hospital was considering adopting, about 25 years ago, and I passed along the probability info, but I have no idea if it was part of their decision.

Even the copper coil which is supposed to have almost no side effects can cause depression. I think the risk of dying from pregnancy and giving birth is still higher than of dying from self harm.
